Purpose of the Study


With the increasing use of modern technology and advanced management techniques, today industries are more and more concerned with increasing their productivity of human resources. It is being realized that a higher quality of human resources and a better work environment would definitely helps in increasing of higher productivity. Therefore, most industries today provide more and more facilities to their workers, who form the backbone of their organization. Thus here, an attempt is made to find out the situation of absenteeism and the welfare facilities provided by the organization and what are the different views of the workers towards facilities.

Objectives of the study

To know the reasons behind workers absenteeism. To know the different welfare facilities provided by the organization. To study the utilization of such facilities. To know the views of workers towards this facilities.

ABSENTEEISM
Employees presence at work place during the scheduled time is highly essential for the smooth running of the business. But sometime employees fail to report at the workplace during the scheduled time, which is known as absenteeism. As per Labor Bureau, simla, absenteeism is the failure of a worker to report at work when he is scheduled to work.

Some common reasons of absenteeism


which are found in the organization.

A. Organizational Factors:

Management style (Managerial attitude) is also one of the causes for increasing absenteeism in the industry. Some times workers get angry with the attitude of management and they prefer to be absent from duty.
Quality and style of supervision is also one of the causes. Which contribute for increasing absenteeism in the industry. Selection, induction and placement should be arranged in a very scientific manner. If the candidates are not selected, than it will contribute for increasing the absenteeism in the industry. Job Satisfaction: If the worker has not job satisfaction and not accepted the work as a challenge, there will be more absenteeism in the industry. Role of union also contribute in the absenteeism, if their role is not positive. area of increasing

Recognition: If the workers are not properly recognized and the organization has no effective communication system, then the absenteeism will take place in the industry. Wages and incentive are also importance cause for absenteeism. If these are not attractive to them, then worker may not regular on job. Overtime: If there is provision for overtime, then it will become one of the causes for increasing absenteeism in the factory.

B. PERSONAL FACTORS. Family problems are also an important cause for absenteeism in the industry. Family size and responsibility also affect the functioning of workers and it contributes in developing the habit for absenteeism. Bad habits like alcoholism, gambling is one of the biggest causes for absenteeism in industry. If the educational level of worker is low, then he may not understand the affects of absenteeism and it may become one of the causes for absenteeism. If the standard of living is poor, then it will contribute in increasing absenteeism in the industry. Lack of proper transport facilities also contribute in developing the habit of absenteeism in the factory. Health: If the worker has ill health then he will be more absent from duty place. EXTERNAL FACTORS: Social, religious and cultural aspects, also contribute in increasing absenteeism. Lack of transportation facility such as over crowded trains and buses, uncertain and irregular schedules. Climatic condition such as, excessive cold, heat, humidity. Snow or heavy rain, are conducive to absenteeism, especially in occupations, which are mainly out-door in character such as building construction and ship-building and sales and marketing jobs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The organization has to create productive environment at the work place to make employees committed to the organization. Work environment includes various internal and external factors which exist at the work place. These factors influence the employees mind and body. The work environment should match with the job requirements. The work environment which suits the requirements of job and comfort of the employee maximizes the workers efficiency and productivity. HR psychologists, therefore, suggest that the organizations should provide conducive and healthy work environment to increase job satisfaction.

Work environment consists of; physical environment, social environment and psychological environment.

Physical environment: Physical environment consists of building location, type of the building, ventilation, lighting, rest rooms, wash rooms, furniture, temperature, noise control, colors of the walls, roof, height of the roof, passages and lobbies, greenery etc
Social environment: social environment consists of managements policies and practices regarding formation of work groups / teams, allowing and encouraging employees to form workgroups, utilizing open-space concept regarding the lay out of offices and work places. The factors like allowing the employees to interact socially with other employees, open and friendly interaction between superiors and subordinates, easy contacts with top management etc

Psychological environment: Psychological work environment includes personality, motivation, morale, group formation, maintenance, utilization, leadership styles, levels of job satisfaction, human relations, superior-subordinate interaction, organizational climate, communication, fun at work etc

Research Methodology
A M U L

For the purpose of the present study the Simple Random Sampling technique was used. Since Amul is a big organization it has different department like powder, Butter, cheese, chocolate, Production, packaging etc. and the workers are not confine d in any one department rather they are being placed in different departments according to their availability. So here, total 50 permanent workers were selected as sample.
