Ecology of Crime
Defined as the study of social and behavioral consequences of the interaction between human beings and their environment. It is the study of one particular behavioral outcome of the processes , the violation of rules of conduct defined in law.

Focuses on:
The role of the environment in the development of peoples differential propensity to engage in crimes and their differential exposure to settings conducive to engage in acts of crime.

Relationship between Day, Season, Climate and Crime

Most reported crimes occur during the warm summer months of July and August Crime rates also may be higher on the first day of the month than at any other time.

Relationship between Temperature and Crime

Laboratory studies suggest that the association between temperature and crime resembles an inverted V-shape curved.

Relationship between Temperature and Crime

Crime rates increase with rising temperature and then begin to not for any physical exertion. However, field studies indicate that the rates of some crime (such as domestic assault), but not all of them (fore example rape), continue to increase as temperature rise.

Relationship between Temperature and Crime

Research has also shown that a long stretch of highly uncomfortable weather is related to homicide rates, indicating that the stress of long term exposure to extreme temperature may prove sufficiently unpleasant and increase violence rates.

Relationship between Temperature and Crime

Criminologist Ellen Cohn and James Rotton in their study of the relationship of temperature to assault found evidence of a highly significant effect, especially during morning and evening hour.

Relationship between Temperature and Crime

They found that a person is four times more likely to be assaulted at midnight when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees than when temperature is 10 degrees below zero.

Population Density
Large urban areas have by far the highest violence rates. Areas with low per capita crime rates tend to be rural. This findings are also supported by victim data. Exceptions to this trend are low population resort areas with large transient and seasonal populations such as Atlantic City, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Region
Crime rates vary by region. Southern states have had consistently higher crime rates in almost all crime categories than those found in other regions of the country.

This date convinced some criminologist that there was a southern subculture of violence. Through the lead has flippedflopped in recent years between the south and the west. The illustrated figure indicate that southern crime rates once again lead the nation.
