Composite materials. Laminated composites. Cross-ply and Angle-ply orientation. Modal analysis Shell 181.

SHELL 181
The Shell 181 element in ANSYS is a 4 node structural shell element.
It is well suited to relatively thin shell structures and it supports layered section modeling for laminated structures. This is ideal for modeling the carbon composite laminated structure . Shell181 element employs six degrees of freedom at each node including three translational degrees of freedom and three rotational degrees of freedom.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Model Problem : Find out the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a laminated composite square plate having length 400 mm for varying values of thickness, with different layers and at different support conditions. Solution : Modeling and Meshing : step-1 > Discipline of problem = Structure > linear > elastic > orthotropic.

Step-2 > Analysis type = Modal. (first 5 modes) Step-3 > Element type = Shell 181 Step -4> Number of layers = 3 and 4 Step-5 > Orientation of fibers=Angle-ply (45/-45/45/-45) and Cross-ply(0/90/0/90).With same thickness of all layers Solution and post processing :
Boundary conditions = Two edges are simply supported and other two supports are varied.(6 possible supports) Load = No external Loads (Only weight).

CONCLUSIONS
1. When comparing the same number of layers ,angle-plies have higher natural frequencies than cross-plies. 2. Increasing the number of layers causes a small difference between their natural frequencies. 3. It is seen that a cross-ply plate with SCSC boundary conditions, has a higher natural frequency than other types of boundary conditions . 4. For cross-ply , the natural frequencies of SFSF and SFSS boundary conditions are closer to each other and smaller than SFSC type. 5. As thickness Increases the natural frequency decreases.
