PIPES MAINTENANCE
Today
Usually municipalities estimate how many pipes need replacing, based on age, soil type, load history and incident statistics. But the actual condition is mostly unknown
Using sophisticated acoustic sensors the city of Boston has been able to save more than three million gallons of water a day by detecting leaks early.

TECHNOLOGY INVOLVED
- Stethoscopic-like devices that are pressed against the asphalt to hear leakages - Miniature sensors that are inserted into the water mains, flow with the water, and hear leaks as small as a quarter of gallon per hour
