Automation
Use of machines, control systems and information technology to optimize throughput in the production of goods and delivery of services Objective of applying automation is to increase productivity, and/or quality beyond that possible with current human labour levels so as to realize economies of scale, and/or realize predictable quality levels Though, automation doesnt emphasise replacing human labour with machines To achieve automation, a process control system must be devised

Reasons for Automating

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. To increase labor productivity To reduce labor cost To mitigate the effects of labor shortages To reduce or remove routine manual and clerical tasks To improve worker safety To improve product quality To reduce manufacturing lead time To accomplish what cannot be done manually To avoid the high cost of not automating

Automation Principles
1. Understand the existing process
Input/output analysis Value chain analysis ( identify the key activities within the firm which form the value chain for that organisation, and have the potential of a sustainable competitive advantage for a company) Charting techniques and mathematical modeling

2. Simplify the process

Reduce unnecessary steps and moves

3. Automate the process

Definitions
Process Resources
The manufacturing operation that is performed on a work unit
Mainly includes different energy sources (Electrical, Thermal, Mechanical, Light) for corresponding action needed to be accomplished Defines the actions performed by an automated process

Program of Instructions Control System

Executes the program of instructions Causes the process to accomplish its defined function (in this case, manufacturing)
