Boeing employs more than 153,000 people in some 67 countries

WHAT THEY DO TODAY

Design, assemble and support commercial jetliners Boeing 7-series family of airplanes lead the industry Commercial aviation services (CAS) offers broad range of services to passenger and freight carriers

Design, assemble and support defense systems

Worlds largest designer and manufacturer of military transports, tankers, fighters and helicopters Support systems provides services to government customers worldwide

Design and assemble satellites and launch vehicles

Worlds largest provider of commercial and military satellites; largest NASA contractor Integrate large-scale systems, develop networking technology and network-centric solutions

Provide financing solutions focused on customer

requirements Develop advanced systems and technology to meet future customer needs

LOCATION OF THE PLANT

EVERETT 30 min drive from SEATTLE Worlds largest building by volume meters Aircraft production depends upon Large labor pool Lots of land Huge amount of aluminum. To convert aluminum to required strength by smelting requires lots of electricity that is why this location excelled because of dam on the columbia river which generated electricity for the whole state. 13.3 million cubic

RANGE OF BOEING

Commercial and military aircraft

Satellites, weapons, electronic and defense

systems

DEMAND FORECASTING

World Value: $4,060 billion Share of fleet

World Delivery units 2011 to 2030 33,500

Larger Twin aisle Single aisle Regional jets

LAYOUT OF THE PLANT

They follow product layout as:-

They mainly assembles al the parts

The main difference is that instead of the aircraft being assembled in one spot they are now on a moving

assembly line
it effects in accelerating the production

It reduces the order backlog and waiting time for customers It reduces production costs Line moves continuously at a rate of 2 inches per minute

PRODUCTION PROCESS

First the fuselage arrives at the plant

It is then fitted with wiring looms, pneumatics

air-conditioning ducting and insulation pipes

Then it is lifted onto the moving assembly line Then the tailfin is lifted into place by an overhead crane and attached on the fuselage

Floor panels and galleys are then installed

Cont
Functional testing begins in a test tunnel called the high blow The aircraft is pressurized to create a cabin differential pressure equivalent to an altitude of 93,000 feet. The aircraft is jacked up to fix the landing gear retraction & extension systems The cabin interior is completed then : seats, lavatories, luggage bins, ceiling panels, carpets etc. Finally the engines are mounted

EVER WONDERED. HOW A AIRCRAFT IS MANUFACTURED

HAVE A LOOK AT THIS..

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
The present build time is now just 11 days (5,500 airplane unit hours of work) with a future target of 6

days (4,000 airplane unit hours of work) for a aircraft.

Any components are not built by Boeing but are outsourced to others manufacturers. It is for cost savings in production for Specialist development

As an incentive for the country to buy other Boeing

CRIB MASTER

It is a system created specifically for managing

inventory

It uses bar coding

It has a collection of manned tool cribs to monitor tool inventory and usage It tracks consumption, issue purchase orders and provide numerous reports at the touch of a button It being able to electronically track and have instant response, keep track of whos got what tool, where it is Youve got access to all that information in a matter of seconds

Each tool is managed and logged, if there are missing items or items checked out for an extended period, the tool tracking software reports what is missing, for how long, and who is accountable.

CAPACITY

It plans to boost its manufacturing capacity over the next three years

It will increase its production by 40 percent through 2014 to keep up with burgeoning demand

for its aircrafts

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF BOEING
