The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Luke 4:18 & John 1:29
The order of the Gospels in our printed Bible is that sanctioned by Tradition. The first three Gospels (Matthew, Mark & Luke) are frequently called the Synoptics (from the Greek terms syn "together" (as in synonym), and opsis "view" (as in optical allusion or optometrist). When placed side by side and brought under one view, these three Gospels present a striking resemblance and appear as one narrative. Not only are many of the same events and speeches recorded in each, but the order and manner in which they are narrated is nearly the same. For most of Christian history, people thought that Matthew was the first and oldest Gospel, and that Mark was a later, shorter version of the same basic message. From the mid-19th century until today, however, most scholars are convinced that Mark is the first and oldest Gospel, and that Matthew and Luke are later expansions of Mark.
Q Mark is written for a Roman audience (c65-70 AD). Matthew is writing to Jewish Christians of Palestine (c80 AD). Luke is writing to all nonJewish readers, but especially Greeks who know very little about the Jewish faith (c80 AD). The three synoptic gospels give a similar view of Jesus, a little distinctive from St. Johns fourth (and last) gospel. John is writing to the early Church, close to the end of the First Century (c90-105 AD) pointing to the identity of Jesus, the reality of the Sacramental Church. This Gospel had a much more universal audience than the other Gospels. Together, the four Gospels give a complete account of the life, ministry and work of Jesus. Mark Q Early Christian communities produced many gospels. There is a lost source (Double Tradition) that scholars believe was included in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke: the Sayings Gospel given the name Q (for Quelle or Source).
Matthew Luke
One is the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, in which Mary is regarded as a disciple, a leader of a Christian group. Another early Christian text known as the Gospel of Truth, reflects on the teachings of Jesus, but does not talk about his death and resurrection; and the Gospel of Thomas contains only sayings attributed to Jesus, many of which are found in the Four Gospels. Other gospels, etc., that did not make it into the Churchs Canon are: the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Arabic Infancy Gospel, Gospel of James, Gospel of the Nativity of Mary, Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, Gospel of Nicodemus (Acts of Pilate), Gospel of Bartholomew, Questions of Bartholomew, Gospel of the Resurrection of Christ (attributed to Bartholomew), Gospel of Peter, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of the Lord (by Marcion), Secret Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of Judas (Thaddaeus). There is also the History of Joseph the Carpenter, the Life of John the Baptist, Gospel of the Hebrews, Gospel of the Nazarenes, Gospel of the Ebionites, Gospel of Mani, Gospel of Appelles, Gospel of Bardesanes, Gospel of Basilides, Gospel of Perfection, and the Gospel of Cenithus, Diatessaron. There are the Gnostic Gospels: Apocryphon of John (also called the Secret Gospel of John, Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians, Greek Gospel of the Egyptians, Coptic Apocalypse of Paul, Apocalypse of Paul, Trimorphic Protennoia, Gospel of Eve, Gospel of the Four Heavenly Realms, Gospel of Matthias, Gospel of the Twelve, and the Mamoria Apostolorum.

WASHINGTON - The U. S. bishops launched a text messaging campaign in June to provide a new way for people to join the national campaign for religious freedom. Catholics and supporters of religious freedom from all other faiths around the nation now can send the text message "Freedom" to 377377 to join the movement. Texters can then receive information regularly on how to help protect religious freedom worldwide. "Across America, our right to live out our faith is being threatened - from Washington's forcing Catholic institutions to provide services that contradict their beliefs, to state governments' prohibiting religious charities from serving the most vulnerable," said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, the chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. "We encourage all supporters around the country to text the simple, meaningful word 'Freedom' (for English) or 'Libertad' (for Spanish) to 377377 to join the movement." The U.S. bishops have issued a call to action to defend religious liberty and urged laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. In one major initiative, the Fortnight for Freedom, from June 21 to Independence Day, July 4, dioceses and parishes commemorated this special two-week period of prayer, study and public action to emphasize both the Christian and American heritage of liberty. The U.S. bishops plan to communicate with supporters by SMS (short message service) about twice a month. Standard text message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt-out. Reply HELP or contact FREEDOM@USCCB.ORG for help. Help Save Our Religious Freedom Text Freedom to 377377 to defend your right to live your faith.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times Sometimes we do not give God a chance. We assume that if we allow God to come near, God will ask us to suffer. Yet, Jesus came that we might have life and live it fully. Jesus wants to heal what is broken and free what is imprisoned, but fear keeps us from drawing near to Jesus. Like those of Jesus native place, we find Jesus too much for us.

The Back to School Fair will be held on Wednesday, August 8th at the DuPage County Fairgrounds from 11:00 am 6:00 pm. This totally free event is open to any DuPage County family who lives near or below the poverty level. Over five thousand children and their families will receive a wide variety of health and human services. Some of the medical services offered include dental and vision screenings. Catholic Charities, in collaboration with the Regional Office of Education, will also give the school-age children school supplies and/or a $10 certificate for the exclusive purchase of school supplies. Please support of the Annual Back to School Fair. The fair is a successful collaboration of over 100 public and private agencies dedicated to improving the needs of lowincome families. It costs over $30,000 to operate the fair and your help is needed to make sure every child is prepared for school this fall. DuPage County is the third most affluent county in Illinois which contributes to a widespread misperception that there are no poor people living here. In reality, over 60,000 DuPage County residents live below the federal poverty level. Over half of these individuals are school children!
allow Catholic Charities to purchase school supply gift certificates for distribution at the Fair. Donations may be mailed to Catholic Charities, Back to School Fair, 26 W. St. Charles Road, Lombard, IL 60148. Or, to donate online, visit catholiccharitiesjoliet.org.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Third Mailing and Pledge Reminders A third request for a contribution to the 2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal is in the mail to all parishioners who have not made a contribution. The Appeal provides critical funding to diocesan ministries that serve individuals and parishes throughout the Diocese of Joliet. It also provides refunds of 50% of the cash received (not pledged) over the parish goal to each parish. If you receive this mailing, please respond generously. You will be helping both our diocese and our parish. Also, the fourth monthly reminders have been sent to those that made an in-pew pledge to the Appeal. Those that pledged by direct mail have already received payment coupons. Thank you for your gifts, and please make your payment as soon as possible. For your convenience, you can bring your pledge payments to Mass and place them in the basket. The parish will forward them to the diocese.
2012 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report
