The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.

~ Our Mission Statement ~

4 GOSPELS + MORE GOSPELS

We often think of the four Gospels in our Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But scholars have found that early Christian communities produced many gospels. As the number of Christian communities grew, so did the number and types of gospels. During the 2nd century, writing gospels became practically "an industry," for the audience and the appetite for the literature seemed unlimited. But there were those who felt a need to place some boundaries on the proliferation of gospels. Among them was Irenaeus, who became the bishop of Lyon, after the Christian community there had suffered a devastating persecution. For Irenaeus, the survival of the church was linked to the necessity for order. That order extended to the texts that Christians used in their worship. In about the year 180 AD, Irenaeus suggested that the proper number of gospels was four. He invoked a curious logic: there are four corners to the earth, there are four winds, there are four beasts of the Apocalypse. Irenaeus himself did not have the authority to simply impose this limitation to four gospels. But it seems that many church officials were sympathetic to his perceived need to reign in diversity. The choice of these four gospels reflects the preferences and practices of a growing majority of early Christian communities. The Canon imposed limits, and it preserved a measure of diversity. It also brought together as many Christian communities as possible into one major church. The four gospels reflect diversity, yet they all share one key element: each tells the story of Passion of Jesus, his suffering, his death and resurrection. That story is intimately connected to the ritual that is the centerpiece of Christian worship, the celebration of the Eucharist, the Last Supper. In the worship of the emerging church, the story was sustained and deepened by the ritual. Gospel and Eucharist go hand in hand to make Christ present to us at every corner of our lives. Page 2 Page 2

The order of the Gospels in our printed Bible is that sanctioned by Tradition. The first three Gospels (Matthew, Mark & Luke) are frequently called the Synoptics (from the Greek terms syn "together" (as in synonym), and opsis "view" (as in optical allusion or optometrist). When placed side by side and brought under one view, these three Gospels present a striking resemblance and appear as one narrative. Not only are many of the same events and speeches recorded in each, but the order and manner in which they are narrated is nearly the same. For most of Christian history, people thought that Matthew was the first and oldest Gospel, and that Mark was a later, shorter version of the same basic message. From the mid-19th century until today, however, most scholars are convinced that Mark is the first and oldest Gospel, and that Matthew and Luke are later expansions of Mark.

Q Mark is written for a Roman audience (c65-70 AD). Matthew is writing to Jewish Christians of Palestine (c80 AD). Luke is writing to all nonJewish readers, but especially Greeks who know very little about the Jewish faith (c80 AD). The three synoptic gospels give a similar view of Jesus, a little distinctive from St. Johns fourth (and last) gospel. John is writing to the early Church, close to the end of the First Century (c90-105 AD) pointing to the identity of Jesus, the reality of the Sacramental Church. This Gospel had a much more universal audience than the other Gospels. Together, the four Gospels give a complete account of the life, ministry and work of Jesus. Mark Q Early Christian communities produced many gospels. There is a lost source (Double Tradition) that scholars believe was included in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke: the Sayings Gospel given the name Q (for Quelle or Source).

Matthew Luke

One is the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, in which Mary is regarded as a disciple, a leader of a Christian group. Another early Christian text known as the Gospel of Truth, reflects on the teachings of Jesus, but does not talk about his death and resurrection; and the Gospel of Thomas contains only sayings attributed to Jesus, many of which are found in the Four Gospels. Other gospels, etc., that did not make it into the Churchs Canon are: the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Arabic Infancy Gospel, Gospel of James, Gospel of the Nativity of Mary, Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, Gospel of Nicodemus (Acts of Pilate), Gospel of Bartholomew, Questions of Bartholomew, Gospel of the Resurrection of Christ (attributed to Bartholomew), Gospel of Peter, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of the Lord (by Marcion), Secret Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of Judas (Thaddaeus). There is also the History of Joseph the Carpenter, the Life of John the Baptist, Gospel of the Hebrews, Gospel of the Nazarenes, Gospel of the Ebionites, Gospel of Mani, Gospel of Appelles, Gospel of Bardesanes, Gospel of Basilides, Gospel of Perfection, and the Gospel of Cenithus, Diatessaron. There are the Gnostic Gospels: Apocryphon of John (also called the Secret Gospel of John, Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians, Greek Gospel of the Egyptians, Coptic Apocalypse of Paul, Apocalypse of Paul, Trimorphic Protennoia, Gospel of Eve, Gospel of the Four Heavenly Realms, Gospel of Matthias, Gospel of the Twelve, and the Mamoria Apostolorum.

Catholic communities nationwide join text message campaign

WASHINGTON - The U. S. bishops launched a text messaging campaign in June to provide a new way for people to join the national campaign for religious freedom. Catholics and supporters of religious freedom from all other faiths around the nation now can send the text message "Freedom" to 377377 to join the movement. Texters can then receive information regularly on how to help protect religious freedom worldwide. "Across America, our right to live out our faith is being threatened - from Washington's forcing Catholic institutions to provide services that contradict their beliefs, to state governments' prohibiting religious charities from serving the most vulnerable," said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, the chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. "We encourage all supporters around the country to text the simple, meaningful word 'Freedom' (for English) or 'Libertad' (for Spanish) to 377377 to join the movement." The U.S. bishops have issued a call to action to defend religious liberty and urged laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. In one major initiative, the Fortnight for Freedom, from June 21 to Independence Day, July 4, dioceses and parishes commemorated this special two-week period of prayer, study and public action to emphasize both the Christian and American heritage of liberty. The U.S. bishops plan to communicate with supporters by SMS (short message service) about twice a month. Standard text message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt-out. Reply HELP or contact FREEDOM@USCCB.ORG for help. Help Save Our Religious Freedom Text Freedom to 377377 to defend your right to live your faith.

Christmas In July July 21 and 22, 2012

To St. John the Baptist Parish Family: Did you ever have to say to yourself, "If I only had ten more dollars, I could drive my child to school so she wouldnt have to walk in the rain? I could buy hamburger for dinner and milk, too." Have you ever had to pray, Lord, please help me provide the basic necessities for my family"? The fact is that there are many people in our own community who have to make decisions between food and gas or school supplies and rent, everyday. Now is the time when the donations and gifts that we generously give at Christmas time are running out, and with the economy the way it is today, needs are ever increasing. Can you afford to give a $10.00 gift card to a family in need? If the answer is YES, please help us celebrate Christmas in July to benefit St. Vincent dePaul. Bring a $10.00 gift card to Mass on July 21 and/or 22 The gift cards for people in need can be purchased at grocery stores such as Jewel, Dominicks, and Ultra, or superstores like Target and Wal-Mart. St. Vincent de Paul will make the gift cards available for the incidental expense needs of the persons and families whom they assist: fresh produce, dairy products, meats, etc. Gas cards would also be useful. Of course, if you are able to contribute more than a $10 gift card, you can make contributions (cash or check) for St. Vincent de Paul to use for the larger-scale expenses that people face: rent or mortgage payments or utility payments (electric, gas, and water bills). For that purpose, you can use the St. Vincent de Paul monthly envelope or the Poor Box located in the back of the narthex. If you are unable to make a contribution at this time, please take a moment to thank God for the blessings that you have and ask Him to continue to watch over you and the families that need His help and compassion. The Ladies Auxiliary of Fr. McGivney 8002 will have a box in the narthex the weekend of July 21 and 22 for your contributions. Donations are anonymous and discreet. If you have any questions, please call one of the coordinators for Christmas in July from LAFM #8002, Mary Rieck (630-668-1307) or Stella Howard, (630-6150200). Thank you for the opportunity to help families in our community.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times Sometimes we do not give God a chance. We assume that if we allow God to come near, God will ask us to suffer. Yet, Jesus came that we might have life and live it fully. Jesus wants to heal what is broken and free what is imprisoned, but fear keeps us from drawing near to Jesus. Like those of Jesus native place, we find Jesus too much for us.

The Back to School Fair will be held on Wednesday, August 8th at the DuPage County Fairgrounds from 11:00 am 6:00 pm. This totally free event is open to any DuPage County family who lives near or below the poverty level. Over five thousand children and their families will receive a wide variety of health and human services. Some of the medical services offered include dental and vision screenings. Catholic Charities, in collaboration with the Regional Office of Education, will also give the school-age children school supplies and/or a $10 certificate for the exclusive purchase of school supplies. Please support of the Annual Back to School Fair. The fair is a successful collaboration of over 100 public and private agencies dedicated to improving the needs of lowincome families. It costs over $30,000 to operate the fair and your help is needed to make sure every child is prepared for school this fall. DuPage County is the third most affluent county in Illinois which contributes to a widespread misperception that there are no poor people living here. In reality, over 60,000 DuPage County residents live below the federal poverty level. Over half of these individuals are school children!
