Electricity in Bangladesh - Present and the future

Last three years of the govt. in this sector First Year (2009): Govt. gave this sector #1 priority and promised to make the country free from load shedding. But the 1st year has gone in planning and talking. Second Year (2010): They made 46 contracts for 48 power plants and a little production rising was noticed. Third Year (2011): though there was increase in production but still the deficit was same in demand and supply. Lets have a look at the table: 2009 5200 mega watt 3600 mw 1600 mw 2011 7500 mw 5300 mw 1700 mw

Maximum Demand Maximum Production Total Deficit

In spite of the increase in production there is still huge deficit in supply. It has been told that this year 255 mega watt and the next year another 2157 mega watt will be added to our national greed.

Present Situation Of The Large Power Plants

I. A leading private company Summit group has been given the job of two gas based power plants and other fuel based power plant which is a join venture project. Maximum product ability of those three plants are 1200 mw. Estimated date of starting those plants is the April of 2014. This is not in the five years timeline of this govt. Govt. didnt give the approval of using 8 km long road to set up the gas pipeline.

IV. V. VI.

For the fuel supply in the power plan the contract with BPC ( Bangladesh Petroliam Corporation ) was made four months after the proposed time. So extra two months time could be taken by Summit to finish the job. The Fellow of CDP said that govt. didnt show any sign of perfection in the completion of large power plants.

Hydrocarbon (Cole) Based Plants:

I. II. PDB and NTPC from India took a project to set up a new power plant of 1300 mw at Rampal in Bagura which will be delayed. According to the contract this plant should be working from the coming January of 2015. But due to the increasing rate of electricity and other problems, it has not been started yet. Another plant of same production ability will be staring with a Chinese company. Ministry said that they have planned to start several plants having 150 to 300 mw production ability in future. But none of them will be the timeline of this govt.

Electricity Import From India

Govt. signed a contract to import 250 mw electricity from India. But this wont be done in time because of line improvement in India section.

Fuel Problem
I. II. III. Fuel crisis and supply problem will continue in electricity production. Even it can be acute in this sector in the near future. 400 to 600 mw production is now hampered because of fuel crisis. In the Rented and Quick Rental power plants fuel storage is a very big problem. To overcome this problem communication improvement, railroad and storage making can be a great help.

Govt.s Achievement In The Last Three Years

I. II. III. IV. V. Govt. said that they have achieved the goal in production as the maximum production ability has reached 5500 mw approximately. According to PDB in 2009 when this govt. started their journey production ability was 3600 mw. Demand was 5200 mw, deficit was 1600 mw. Now production ability is 5300 mw, demand is 7300 mw. Deficit is still 1700 mw. After the irrigation this deficit will be a little lower and may be 1400 mw. Govt. promised to make the country free from load-shedding by the year 2011. As it has not been done yet 2012 has become the new deadline. But experts say that wont help much. Recently a hydro-electricity project has been taken with a joint working group of Bangladesh, Nepal & Bhutan. Nepal has the opportunity of producing 24 thousands mw electricity from hydro projects. But it is only producing 1400 mw from which India is taking 20% for their technical support. So if this project is completed successfully, it will be a new milestone for Bangladesh. Short term steps taken by the govt. wont be much helpful in the near future.
