Vorbeck to Open Eastern Shore Plant


Vorbeck Materials Corp., a Howard County-based technology company, will open a 42,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Pocomoke City, creating 50 jobs over the next three years. It is exciting to see a cutting-edge, innovative company like Vorbeck creating high-quality manufacturing jobs on the Eastern Shore, said Gov. OMalley. Located within the Pocomoke-Worcester County Enterprise Zone, Vorbeck has received $650,000 in enterprise equity from DBED and may be eligible for more in its new facility, including the One Maryland Tax Credit and the Job

MD Forms Bio Partnership with Paris


DBED and Paris Medicen signed a letter of intent in June at the BIO 2012 International Convention in Boston to establish a partnership between the two regions focusing on disease research and translational medicine. The collaboration will involve private biotech companies, as well as academic and research institutions in Maryland and Paris. The MD Biotechnology Center will coordinate the efforts, set to include funding opportunities and the execution of clinical trials in the areas of infectious diseases, neurosciences, and nanotechnologies.

Inspiring New Generation of Scientists


In an effort to reach more students through game-based education, the MdBio Foundation is working with Hunt Valley-based designer BreakAway to develop a game that teaches STEM - science, technology and math. The Foundation announced its game platform, MDBioSphere, on June 13 and games will be free to students and teachers in 2013. The first game, Survival!, aims to teach students about life science topics, including DNA structure and genetic code, by creating a living creature that must forage for food, fight off predators and construct shelter.

DBED Debuts Mobile-Friendly Website


In partnership with Towson University, DBED launched a mobile friendly version of its ChooseMaryland.org website last month. Developed to provide more accessibility to site visitors on the go, the interactive tool features up-to-date business news and events, highlights the States competitive advantages and provides key economic and employment data. The site also encourages users to visit DBEDs social media channels and includes an option to receive the departments award-winning suite of Pulse enewsletters. Learn more.

Choptank Transport Adds Jobs

With the addition of an 8,000-square-foot expansion to its Preston facility, Choptank Transport plans to create nearly 100 jobs over the next three years. The full-service shipping logistics provider has already added 30 workers since the expansion was completed last December and plans to add at least another 30 workers by the end of 2012. Choptank was recently honored by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce as its 2012 Small Business of the Year for companies with a staff size between 51 and 200 employees.

UMD Innovation Outreach to Asia


University of Maryland President Wallace Loh toured Taiwan and South Korea last month to lay the groundwork for new research and educational partnerships through sessions with high-level government, industry and academic officials. In addition to establishing agreements with several prestigious universities, Loh partnered with an innovation park in Hsinchu City Taiwans Silicon Valley and met with officials at Samsungs headquarters in South Korea. By building new research collaborations, bringing Asian companies to our international incubator, and fostering intercontinental student exchanges, we keep Maryland plugged into the economic and intellectual currents, said Loh.

Startup MD to Host Biz Competition


Startup Maryland will crisscross the State on a two-and-a-half week bus tour in September to roll out the first round of its business pitch competition. The group will record video of entrepreneurs business pitches and post them online for a round of public voting. The top 16 will receive a month of coaching before they deliver their pitch again and compete for prize money. Tour organizers welcome the opportunity to collaborate with organizations and people across Maryland in support and celebration of entrepreneurs. Learn more.
