NABA/PG/PD/2012

Program Introduction
In NABA, we have an atelier. This is actually not an original idea: in fact, we copied it from the artisanal boutiques we are surrounded by here in Italy, and in Milan. Roles are clear and well defined, in an atelier. Pupils have the opportunity to learn new methodologies and techniques while working with their masters. In our atelier, we use several different methodologies, apply countless techniques, and have many masters. In our atelier, you become a designer. You learn how to read and understand time, space, and the world around us. In our atelier, you learn to design today to be able to redesign the future.

Program Curriculum
The Two-year MA program in Design, specialization in Product Design, aims at preparing future designers and provides them with a contemporary approach to design, which originated from the Italian design culture. For this very reason, the program is structured in fifteen courses during which students are led by renowned design professionals in the investigation and design of the new relation amongst human beings, environment, and objects. The program is strongly characterized by a twofold approach: on one hand the analysis of the reference scenario; on the other hand, the design or re-design activity through an experiential and physical relation with the object. The two-year Product Design course represents the core of the program and allows students, either individually or in teams, to elaborate a personal design approach. In the Project methodology course students perfection their working method through experimentation and while dealing with real design contexts. In the History of design and Project culture courses they acquire the basic elements to work in the different research fields. Finally, they attend a Rendering 3D course where they perfection their representation techniques, a Integrated new media course where they design the communication of a design object, and a New materials technology course, where they implement projects with a high level of material innovation. During the second year of the program, the previously developed skills are further enhanced and broadened through contemporary disciplines such as Multimedia design or Interaction design, or through the examination of old traditions like in the Decoration class. All courses aim at preparing a well-rounded designer, capable to manage contemporary and complex projects. The presence of a specialization in Interior Design, parallel to that of Product Design, allows students to collaborate in transversal projects and to acquire a much more through vision of the possible intervention typologies and modalities. At the end of the program students are awarded a diploma, corresponding to a second level academic diploma in Design with a specialization in Product Design.

Thesis and Final Project

The program foresees the development of a final project work, together with a theoretical thesis where the student analyzes the presented project under a methodological perspective. The final project and thesis, developed under the supervision of a faculty member, are discussed in front of an evaluating commission headed by the Program Director.

Learning Outcomes and Career Opportunities

During the program, participants develop project skills that may be applied in the various fields of contemporary design, from industrial production of domestic and professional devices, to customized and even co-designed artefacts. Thanks to the continuous interaction with lecturers and professionals, students become well-rounded designers, able to handle the development of a product from the initial idea until the actual production, passing through the development of a design strategy and the material research. As well as acquiring technical and operational skills, participants develop a wider vision of the designers role in the contemporary creative and production systems, and they become more aware of the challenges that designers have to handle nowadays. All these skills allow graduates to enter the job market and position themselves in design studios and companies of different dimension, from multinational companies to boutique studios.

Internship and Study Abroad

Students acquire a number of methods and tools in extra-curricular activities and classes, which will be useful to them while entering the job market: career development, project management and presentation techniques, and portfolio creation are the main modules aimed at developing their interdisciplinary skills. We also encourage students to pursue an internship within product design companies and professional studios. Students are helped in their choice by the academic staff, as well as in the definition of the path and structure that is most suitable to them. The aim is to enhance each students professional abilities and set the basis for the creation of a network that will be crucial in its professional growth as a designer. Alternatively, students can spend a period of study abroad (in Europe or overseas), at one of the Academies or Universities, with which NABA has established international exchange agreements (LLP-Erasmus and other programs).

Partners and International Relations

The wide network of relations established by NABA with companies and institutions guarantees a strong connection between the program and the professional world. For example, students collaborate with companies such as Samsung (on a project focused on smart technologies), Ikea, or Zanotta (in the design and implementation of a series of prototypes for home dcor objects and pieces of furniture, possible through a partnership with Bosch Elettroutensili Green). Moreover, NABA educational environment provides students with a significant international exposure: around 24% of over the 2000 students attending NABA programs come from abroad, and the Academy can count on more than 50 European and extra-European partner universities and Academies. Since 2009 NABA is also part of Laureate International Universities, a global network of higher education institutions.
