Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Lam 3:22-33; 2 Cor 8:7-15; Mark 5:21-43 July 1, 2012 Ordinary Time & Election Day: Mexico In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, I have good news: We are empowered to extend Gods compassion, peace, justice, healing, and love, because of Gods generous gift of grace. Nothing more. Nothing less. The reading from Pauls letter to the Corinthians is a very appropriate passage for our congregation today. I cant help but imagine Paul writing to us. If he were here with us, I think he would say, You, as a congregation and as individuals, and whether you believe it or not, excel in many things. You excel in faith, speech, knowledge, and love. And today, he would say, You also excel in the spirit of giving. This is clear because, last week, more pledges came in, and together, you pledged to be a sustainable congregation. As I read this passage, I couldnt help but imagine Paul writing to this churchbut only up to a point. Then he seems to do something a little questionable: he compares the Corinthian churchs love with that of the Macedonian church, to see if they can rise to the occasion. I understand that this is a motivational tactic, but its kind of hard to swallow. I guess if youre Paul, you can get away with it. I wonder if comparing one churchs love against anothers is effective...or even necessary. I wonder because of what Ive witnessed here over the past several weeksas the Spirit moves and guides this church. With very few, if any, comparisons to other churches or their love for God, you have responded with brave and positive hearts to the desperate financial situation of this church. You have done so according to your own ability, and not by making comparisons. You

have done so because you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christand that this is what makes everything possible. We, as a congregation, have clearly responded to our desire to continue moving forward as a church. We have pledged to keep this congregation open and sustainable for the foreseeable future. This happens only through Gods gracebut thats not the end...and Pauls letter says as much. There are two encouragements in Pauls letter that I would like to leave with you this morning. The first: See that you also excel in this grace of giving! You have excelled in many ways as a church. I hope that you will also excel in this grace of giving, not so the doors might stay open, but so that Gods grace might flow through these doors and into the world. The second: Finish the work we so eagerly began. We are just at the beginning of this task of creating a sustainable congregation. We must remain eager, and finish what we have started. I believe that this congregation will excel in this grace of giving, and that you will finish the work at hand, but not because of some competition with another church or with one another. You will excel because you remember Gods generous grace. Its through this grace alone that we are empowered to extend Gods compassion, peace, justice, healing, and love to others. And its this same grace that enables and empowers us to sustain this church. Gods grace enables and empowers us to do all that we do. Nothing more. Nothing lessand thanks be to God for that. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y hermanas, tengo buenas noticias: Estamos facultados para extender la compasin , la paz, la justicia, la sanidad y el amor de Dios, debido nada ms y nada menos a la generosa donacin de la gracia divina. La lectura de la carta de Pablo para los Corintios es un pasaje muy apropiado para nuestra congregacin el da de hoy. No puedo dejar de imaginar a Pablo escribindonos. Si l estuviera aqu con nosotros, creo que dira: "Ustedes, como congregacin y como individuos, y crean o no, sobresalen en muchas cosas. Ustedes sobresalen en la fe, el lenguaje, el conocimiento y el amor. "Y hoy, l deca:" Tambin se destacan en el espritu de dar. "Esto es claro porque, la semana pasada, ms compromisos llegaron, y juntos ustedes se comprometieron a ser una congregacin sustentable. Al leer este pasaje, no pude evitar imaginarme a Pablo, escribiendo a la iglesia ... pero slo hasta cierto punto. Luego parece que hace algo un poco cuestionable: se compara el amor de la iglesia de Corinto con la de la iglesia de Macedonia, para ver si puede darse la ocasin. Entiendo que esta es una tctica de motivacin, pero es un poco difcil de tragar. Supongo que si fueras Pablo, t podras escapar con esto. Me pregunto si se compara el amor de una iglesia en contra de otra persona es efectivo ... o incluso necesario. Me lo pregunto porque de lo que he visto aqu en las ltimas semanas ... como el Espritu mueve y gua a esta iglesia. Con muy pocas o ninguna comparacin con otras iglesias o su amor por Dios, ustedes han respondido con un corazn valiente y positivo a la desesperada situacin financiera de esta iglesia. Usted lo han hecho de acuerdo a su propia capacidad, y no por hacer comparaciones. Ustedes lo han hecho porque ya conocen la gracia de nuestro Seor Jesucristo... y que esto es lo que hace que todo sea posible. Nosotros, como congregacin, hemos respondido claramente a nuestro deseo de seguir avanzando como una iglesia. Nos hemos comprometido a mantener esta congregacin abierta y sostenible en el futuro previsible. Esto

slo sucede a travs de la gracia de Dios ... pero ese no es el final ... y la carta de Pablo lo dice. Hay dos estmulos en la carta de Pablo que me gustara compartir con ustedes esta maana. El primero: "Mira, que tu tambin sobresales en esta gracia de dar!" Ustedes han sobresalido en muchos aspectos como una iglesia. Espero que ustedes tambin sobresalgan en esta gracia de dar, no por que las puertas pueden permanecer abiertas, sino tambin para que la gracia de Dios pueda fluir a travs de estas puertas y en el mundo. El segundo: "Terminar el trabajo que con tanto entusiasmo se inici." Estamos slo al comienzo de esta tarea de crear una congregacin sustentable. Debemos mantenernos entusiastas, y terminar lo que hemos iniciado. Creo que esta congregacin sobresaldr en esta gracia de dar, y ustedes terminaran el trabajo a mano, pero no a causa de una cierta competencia con otra iglesia o de uno con el otro. Ustedes sobresaldrn porque recuerdan la generosa gracia de Dios. Esto es a travs de esta sola gracia que estn facultados para extender la compasin, la paz, la justicia, la sanidad y el amor de Dios a los dems. Y es esta misma gracia que permite y nos da poder para sostener esta iglesia. La gracia de Dios permite y nos da poder para hacer nada ms y nada menos todo lo que hacemos. ... y gracias a Dios por eso. Amn.
