Lesson Plan Subject: Science Date: 7th September 2011 Time: 9.30pg -10.

30pg (1 jam) Year: 5 Amanah No of pupils: 22/22 pupils (7/7 boys and 15 /15 girls) Theme: Investigating Technology Learning area: Strength and Stability Pre requisite knowledge: Pupils already learnt about shape in Year 3 under topic Three-Dimensional Shape in Mathematics. Learning Objective: 1. Knowing the shapes of objects in structures. 2. Understanding the strength and stability of a structure. Learning outcome: By the end of the lesson, pupils are able to: 1. Identify shape in structure at least three form five pictures shown. 2. state the factors that contribute to strength and stability. Science process skill (SPS) : Observing, making hypothesis, communicating. Thinking Skill: Relating, making prediction, visualizing. Scientific Attitudes and Noble Values: Appreciating the contribution of science and technology. Teaching and learning resources: 1. Microsoft power point.

2. Laptop and projectors.

3. Video clip: cartoon and song. 3. Two models of tower with different height. 4. A piece of board.

5. Worksheet. 6. Handkerchief. 7. Cube

Phase Orientation (5 minutes)

Content Knowing the shape of objects in structure.

Teaching and learning activities 1. Teacher asks pupils to guess what object is being hidden under the handkerchief on teachers hand and give a hint. Hint: This object has six square faces.

Remark Teaching aid: 1. Cube solid. 2. Handkerchief.

SPS: Observing and 2. Teacher asks the pupils to relating. sit in five groups and distribute envelope with picture of building to each group. 3. Teacher asks each group to identify shape in the picture. Then, each group will tell the answer when teacher ask about it. Picture containing shapes: -cuboid -cone -pyramid -cylinder -sphere Teaching aid: - Printed pictures of building

Understanding the strength and stability of a structure.

4. Teacher provides two models of tower and asks pupils to predict which

model is more stable. 5. Teacher asks a pupil to come in front and to test the stability of the tower model. There are two ways of testing the stability: 1) Fan the tower: the higher tower will fall first. 2) Put the board on top of it: the higher tower will be shakier *The taller model tower is less stable than the shorter model tower. 6. Teacher introduce the topic: Strength and stability. 1. Teacher divided the pupils to be in four groups. 2. Teacher distributes a mind map for each group. 3. Teacher asks pupils to discuss in the group and complete the mind map about the factors that affecting the strength and stability.

Teaching aid: -two model of towers with different height. - a piece of board. SPS: Making prediction

Eliciting the idea

Understanding the strength and stability of a structure.

Teaching aid: Mind map Thinking skill: Relating.

Restructuring the ideas

Understanding the strength and stability of a structure.

4. Teacher asks a representative for each group to present their idea. 1. Teacher distributes the materials that will be used to build a model for each group. Materials: -rolled newspapers -cellophane tape -scissors -glue 2. Each group has to build a model which is strong and stable using the materials given. 3. After completed in 10 minutes, two persons from each group will present their model in front. 4. Teacher discuss with pupils on factors that make each model stable and stong. Thinking skills: visualizing

Application of ideas

Application of ideas about characteristics for strength and stability.

1. Teacher shows some situational pictures to test pupils understanding. Teaching aid: Pictures

What will happen if the elephant has feet like flamingo? Why the giraffe does have to bend his feet while drinking? Arch bridge is strong. Why? Can we build our house from bamboo to save the cost? Why Menara Condong Teluk Intan is stable although it is a bit slanted?

SPS: -Making prediction -Making inference Thinking skill: -Relating

2. Each group has to answer one of the questions given. Reflection Reflection on the topic. 1. Teacher distributes mind Teaching aid: map and ask each pupil and -Mind map ask them to complete it. -video clip: song 2. Teacher ask pupil to sing along a song entitled 'strong and stable'. 3. Teacher make conclusion on topic. Reflection:
