TEACHER'S GUIDE

Each day do a little of each of the following sequences: Phone

Numbers, Calling 911, and the Poison Booklet. This also fits well
with a mini-unit on families.

Phone Numbers

1. Teach numbers zero to 10 using real objects and the successintesl

laminated Literacy Number Boards. Go over the stroke direction. Have upper
students cover the number and write it and then uncover to check their
spelling.
2. Have students count to 10: (a) choral (you say and they repeat); (b) each
student in turn says one number going in order around the class, (c) the

choral, do 1 by 1, and then in pairs).
3. When your students can count from zero to 10, do pages 21 and 22 (on
different days).
4. If your class knows numbers from 1 to 10, do numbers to 20 and then try
the easy math problems from successintesl Money & Number Wizard kit.
5. Grouping: Ask several students for their phone number. As they say the
number, write it on the board. Then choral it, sweeping your hand under the
number as they repeat. Be sure they group the numbers: 604 -- 254 -- 90 -84.
6. Do a chain drill. Ask S1 and S2 for their phone numbers. Then ask S2 to
ask S3. Choral the question as necessary, cuing it by holding up a finger for
each word in the question. Then have students ask their partners.
7. Do the mixer on page 23.

Calling 911
Hint for new teachers: Do each step on consecutive days.
1. Identifying 911 Emergency Vehicles
a) Hold up each large flash card (from pages 6-8) in turn. Elicit the word and
choral (you say and they repeat.) Do several times with the whole class.
