introduction to biostatistics. Boston: McGrawHill.

Statistical analysis has become a fundamental quantitative skill for biology students. This highly accessible and thorough introduction to the use of statistics in the biological sciences emphasizes the relationships among probability, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing. The authors highlight the expected value of various test statistics under the null and research hypotheses to develop students understanding of hypotheses-testing methodology. Because student projects often have small sample sizes, nonparametric alternatives are included with the standard parametric techniques. The examples are easy to understand and are drawn from many areas in the life sciences, including genetics, physiology, ecology, agriculture, and medicine. The end-of-chapter problems require the student to choose the appropriate analysis, inducing them to hone decision-making skills that are critical to statistical analysis. CYTOLOGY
medical and scientific

study of cells refers to a branch of pathology, the medical specialty that deals with making diagnoses of diseases and conditions through the examination of tissue samples from the body

What are the differences between cytology and histology?

In cytology preparations, the pathologist examines individual cells and groups of cells . A histology section shows two components: 1. Cells 2. Tissue (micro)architecture (this is not available in cytology preparations) which shows the relationship between cells and the tissue components; notably, basement membrane and stroma. Malignant cells that are surrounded by basement membrane or that are sitting on basement membrane means that the diagnosis is carcinoma in situ. Malignant cells that are intermingled with, and surrounded by stroma means -- the diagnosis is invasive carcinoma.

Phillips, R., Kondev, J., & Theriot, J. (2009). Physical biology of the cell. New York: Garland Science.
Physical Biology of the Cell is a biophysics textbook that explores how the basic tools and insights of physics and mathematics can illuminate the study of molecular and cell biology. Drawing on key examples and seminal experiments from cell biology, the book demonstrates how quantitative models can help refine our understanding of existing biological data and also be used to make useful predictions. The book blends traditional models in cell biology with the quantitative approach typical in physics, in order to introduce the reader to both the possibilities and boundaries of the emerging field of physical biology. While teaching physical model building in cell biology through a practical, case-study approach, the text explores how quantitative modeling can be used to build a more profound, intuitive understanding of cell biology. -Amazon
