SOIL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED NEW HOTEL PROJECT IN BERUWALA

1. INTRODUCTION

LOLC Leisure Limited proposes to develop a site located along the sea coast at Beruwala as a new hotel complex. This site previously housed the Hotel Riverina and the Club Palm Garden Hotel. These two hotels were affected by the Tsunami Disaster and were consequently damaged. It is proposed to re-develop this area after demolishing the existing buildings. The Project Consultant is Q Serve (Pvt) Ltd. The Consultant Structural Engineer is NCD Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. The proposed layout of the new buildings is shown in Fig. 1. It is reported that The main hotel building will be designed as a frame structure. The estimated (service) column loads would vary between 250 kN and 750 kN; The other hotel buildings, viz. the Hotel Rooms, will be designed with load bearing walls. The estimated (ultimate) udl on strip foundations would be around 160 kN/m. Geotech (Pvt) Ltd. has been authorized to carry out a soil investigation at the site, and make recommendations for the foundations.

2.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The site for the proposed new development is a trapezoidal block of land adjacent to the sea shore which forms the western boundary of the site. The length of the site parallel to the seashore is around 100m, whilst the two boundaries perpendicular to the sea shore are approximately 50m and 63m. This part of the land has an extent of around 1.4 Acres. The eastern boundary of the proposed new development is located about 85m from Galle Road. These details are shown in Fig. 1.

3.

BOREHOLE INVESTIGATIONS

The Borehole Investigations consisted of advancing 5 Nos. boreholes at locations marked BH-01 to BH-05 in Fig. 1. The boreholes were advanced using cutting tools attached to the bottom of the drill rod to cut the soil; 76 mm diameter casing to support the sides of the borehole; and adopting the wash boring procedure to remove the cuttings from

the bottom of the borehole. The drilling operation was done manually using the cathead and derrick. Borehole BH-03 was terminated at a depth of 9.5m on reaching a hard stratum which was difficult to penetrate with the wash boring tools. The other boreholes were terminated at a depth of 15.5m each, which was before reaching hard rock. Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were carried out regularly in the overburden. This test was carried out as specified in BS 1377. Disturbed samples of soil were collected both from the SPT tube and the cuttings collected from the washings. Ground water level (GWL) was determined as the depth at which the water level stabilized inside the borehole. The investigations were carried out from 31st May to 2nd June, 2012.

4.

SUB-SURFACE CONDITIONS

From a study of the borehole logs, it is concluded that the overburden at BH-01 can be modeled by successive layers as indicated below. Layer Position No. (m) 1 2 3 0.0-0.4 0.4-11.7 11.715.5 Layer description Fill containing building debris Dense fine sand Loose fine sand SPT No. 2030 1

Ground water level (GWL) was at a depth of 1.5m. Similar sub-surface conditions were observed at the other borehole locations up to the depth investigated. Layer No. 2 in several boreholes contained very dense sand layers (sandstone?) in which the SPT hammer was bouncing. It is most probable that the termination depth in BH-03 was in such a layer.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FOUNDATIONS

Recommendations for main Hotel building

It is recommended that the foundations consist of individual pad footings. The footings should be placed within Layer No. 2 at a depth of around (1.0-1.5) m and designed for an allowable bearing capacity of 250 kN/m2. 5.2 Recommendations for other Hotel Room buildings

It is recommended that the foundations consist of RC strip footings. The footings should be placed within Layer No. 2 at a depth of around 1.0m and designed for an allowable bearing capacity of 200 kN/m2.
