Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Job 38:1-11; 1 Cor 6:1-13; Mark 4:35-41 June 24, 2012 Ordinary Time In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, I have good news: God is with us. Regardless of what storm we might be weathering, no matter how challenging life might become at times, no matter how turned around we might feel, God is with us. God is with us and every once in a while we can hear Jesus words echo in our own lives when he says, Quiet! Be still! This morning we read a familiar passage from Mark about the time when Jesus and the disciples leave for the other side in their boat. Jesus falls asleep. There is a big storm. The disciples wake Jesus and he calms the storm. Its a familiar storyone that offers so many images of Gods relationship with us. The striking thing about the passage today is the disciples question to Jesus in a scary situation and Jesus response. The disciples are in the midst of a storm and fear for their lives. After shaking him awake, the disciples ask Jesus, Teacher, dont you care if we drown? Instead of answer them directly, he says, Quiet! Be still! and calms the storm. This is his answer. Jesus does care. He does help the disciples and in a very real way, Jesus saves their lives. He may simply have been able to get them back to the shore and away from the storm. But instead of getting the disciples out of harms way, Jesus addresses the root problem that they face, and calms the storm. By calming the storm, the disciples can remain on their journeythey can continue on their way. There are times when I wonder if we, as Christians, think that we are exempt from the storms in our own livesthat Jesus love will simply protect us from them.

As most of us can attest, this is simply not true. Just because God claims us, and just because we gratefully live in Gods grace, does not mean we are immune from all the storms life has to offer. In fact, all of us, at one time or another (or maybe even today), face these storms. At one time or another, all of us have uttered the same question the disciples did in that boat. Dont you care if we drown? God, dont you care? The storms in our lives have left many of us wondering if God caresand hoping that some how God will come and calm the storm, or at least get us out of harms way. Brothers and sisters, in our reading today, we see that God does carethat God is with usthere should be no doubtbut often, in the midst of a storm, we doubtwe doubt and we try to fix whatever the problem is on our own. But we dont have to. I wonder what might happen if we were to hear Jesus words spoken to the storm as a reminder to us, instead. Quiet! Be silent! Instead of Jesus shouting loudly at the storm, I wonder if we might hear these words as a gentle reminder when we find ourselves asking God, Dont you care? Quiet! Be silent! Yes, I do care. Quiet! Be silent! Yes, I am with you. Quiet! Be silent! Yes, I will calm this storm God is present with us in these stormsGod will calm them and see us through. Sometimes its only after we hear Jesus gentle reminder to be silentto be stillthat we hear what God is saying to us. So, the next time you find yourself in the midst of one of lifes storms, looking for a way out, I pray that you remember Jesus words to the storm, Quiet! Be silent. I hope that you hear them and know not only that God is going to see you through that storm, but also that God does care. God is with you, and thanks be to God for this. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor, y Sustentador, Amen. Hermanos y hermanas, les tengo buenas nuevas: Dios esta con nosotros. Sin importar de lo que la tormenta podra ser la intemperie, sin importar cun difcil sea la vida podra llegar a veces, no importa cmo se dio la vuelta no sintamos, Dios est con nosotros. Dios est con nosotros y de vez en cuando podemos escuchar las palabras de Jess resuenen en nuestras propias vidas cuando dice: Silencio! Qudate quieto! Esta maana leemos una pasaje de San Marco que es muy familiar sobre cuando Jess y los discpulos salen por el otro lado en una barca. Jess esta dormido. Hay un gran tormenta. Despus que los discpulos despierta a Jess, los piden Jess, Maestro, no te importa que nos ahoguemos? En vez de dando una respuesta directamente a ellos, l dijo: Silencio! Clmate! y se calma la tormenta. Esto es su respuesta. Jess le importa. l ayuda los discipulos y, en una manera verdadero, Jess salvo sus vidas. Simplemente, puede haber sido capaz de volver a la orilla y lejos de la tormenta. Pero en vez de esto, Jess se dirige a la raz del problema que enfrentan, y calma la tormenta. Y al calmar la tormenta, los discpulos pueden continuar su caminoque puedan seguir su camino. De vez en cuando yo considero si nosotros, como Cristiano, pensamos que estamos excluido de las tormentas en nuestras propias vidasque el amor de Jess simplemente va a nos proteger de las tormentas. Como la mayora de nosotros puede confirmar, esto simplemente no es verdad. El hecho de que Dios nos reclama, y slo porque nos agradece vivir en la gracias de Dios, no quiere decir que son inmunes a todas las tormentas que la vida tiene a ofrecer. La verdad es, todo de nosotros, de vez en cuando (o puede ser hoy) enfrentamos tormentas. En un momento u otro, todos nosotros hemos pronunciado la misma pregunta que hicieron los discpulos en la barca: no te importa que nos ahoguemos? Dios, no te importa? Las tormentas de nuestras vidas nos han dejado considerando si Dios nos importay esperando que un una manera Dios vendr y calmar la tormentao por lo menos sacarnos de peligro. Hermanos y hermanas, en nuestra lectura hoy, vemos que Dios le importaque Dios est con nosotrosno debe ser dudapero a menudo, entre las tormentas, tenemos dudadudamos y intentamos a arreglar lo que es el problema solo. Pero no necesitamos hacerlo solo. Yo me pregunto si ocurrir si escuchamos las palabras de Jess que lo habla a la tormenta como un recordatorio a nosotros mismos. Silencio! Clmate! En vez de Jess gritando a la tormenta, yo me pregunto si podramos escuchar esta palabras como un suave recordatorio cuando estamos pidiendo nosotros mismos: Dios, No te importa?

Silencio! Clmate! S, te importa. Silencio! Clmate! S, estoy contigo. Silencio! Clmate! S, calmar la tormenta. Dios est presente con nosotros en las tormentas de vida. Dios las calmar y cuidarnos. De vez en cuando es solamente despus que escuchamos la suave recordatorio a estar calladoa estar calmaque omos que Dios nos diga. Entonces, la prxima vez que se encuentra su mismo entre una tormenta de la vida, buscando una salida, yo oro que recuerden las palabras de Jess a la tormenta: Silencio! Clmate! Espero que las escucharn y saber que Dios no solamente les acompaar durante la tormenta, pero Dios te importa tambin. Dios esta contigo y gracias a Dios por esto. Amen.
