June 26, 2012 To the Mexican people To society in general To the mass media The Assembly of Academics formed by #YoSoy132-Acadmicos makes the following statement in order to establish a pre-electoral political stance which foresees the direction of the #YoSoy132 movement toward a certain future. Faced with the situation in which we live, we declare that a fierce media campaign has been unleashed, which hysterically insists on bestowing an immaculate nature upon the electoral process whose most important stage will take place on July 1st, 2012; this campaign perversely evades the sophisticated new forms which we all know are contributing to the adulteration of the will of the people: the monopoly and manipulation of the media, the induction of votes via the opinion polls, the dirty war, the massive campaign overspending, the marginalization and impoverishment of large groups of Mexicans and the later and immoral exploitation of this same circumstance. All these elements together make it impossible for an authentically democratic political-electoral process to be carried out. The Mexican electoral legislation establishes the figure of abstract cause of invalidity of the election; this figure takes into account general situations which, while not being materially quantifiable, do in fact determine the final result of an election. The objective conditions in which the current electoral process has developed make the application of this figure juridically viable, while the administrative and juridical electoral authorities maintain an attitude of complicity and calm. It is a reality that the de facto powers have imposed a virtual reality which moves us without a doubt to permanently question the transparency and legitimacy of the election, and which has taken hold of our constantly postponed democratic transition and consolidation. We are convinced that as a result of the half-heartedness, negligence and even partiality that the IFE has demonstrated in attending to the reports of irregularities and possible electoral crimes, allowing for an air of uncertainty as we face the electoral process of July 1st, it is essential that the citizens, and particularly the #YoSoy132 movement, take the necessary measures to lessen, to the best of our abilities, the scenario of fraud that could take place. We cannot remain passive at the expense of the inefficacy that the IFE has shown to guarantee clean and transparent elections. For this reason, it is indispensable to participate, whether in an autonomous and organized fashion as #YoSoy132 observers, or in the initiatives

that have already commenced and that arise as tools for citizens in order to give certainty to the results of the presidential elections. Initiatives such as Fotoxcasilla, contamos.org.mx and cobertura132.mx, as well as the commission established by the #YoSoy132 movement in the website vigilanciaciudadana132.wordpress.com, require the disinterested participation of conscientious citizens. This is the moment to face up to the responsibility that we have acquired as a movement and to give a concentrated effort so that the electoral process can be witness to the insurmountable will of our generation to consolidate our feeble democracy. This is because in the end, it is our responsibility to correct the failures of the generations that precede us and open the way to a better future for the generations to follow. In this sense it is necessary to emphasize, stress and strengthen the political unity of the student movement which has opened itself up to the social struggle for real and conscientious democratization of an obsolete and inefficient system, in order to safeguard both the participation of the people in decision-making and the organic unity which the movement has maintained from the beginning and which cannot nor should not lose; thus ensuring its agreed-upon articulation, organization and action in the post-electoral scenarios. From the assembly of #YoSoy132-Acadmicos, which is not only a university movement, we call all citizens to become informed through the mass media that shows impartiality, the social media and alternative media, as well as to analyze, criticize and denounce the disinformation that Televisa and TV Azteca propagate. We call upon the people of Mexico to take an active role in this historic electoral process which will be, without a doubt, a real precedent of the generalized, analytical and conscientious participation of Mexico in its political, economic and social reality. We demand that the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), the Special Prosecutor for Electoral Crimes (FEPADE) and the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TRIFE) conduct themselves with impartiality and transparency with the aim of guaranteeing the absolute respect of the will which the citizens express at the polling booths. We demand the cessation of violent acts, provocations and intimidation of all the members of the #YoSoy132 movement, whether students or civilians, as they assert their right to freedom of expression.
