The Character Development of Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles

Sherlock Holmes, the main character in the story. Protagonist static character due to his character is not influenced by the conflict of the story.

1.

2.

Dr. Watson, friend of Holmes, helps him to solve the mystery. Protagonist static character as well as Holmess character. Seems that he is the main character in this story because it seems that he is the one who tell the story, or write it, so then we can see that he is just like the narrator of the story.

3.

Dr. James Mortimer, the doctor of Charles Baskerville. Static character.

4.

Sir Charles Baskerville, superstitious baronet who killed in the beginning of the story, so he is definitely static character.

5.

Sir Henry Baskerville, nephew of Charles Baskerville. Another main character in this story due to there is a plot arranged to murder him. Even he has been through the climax, his character has no change at all. Static character.

6.

Cartwright, an office boy of a hotel in London. Helps Holmes to deliver messages and do some surveillance to solve the mystery. Another static character

7.

Mr. Vandeleur, also known as Jack Stapleton, later known as Rodger Baskerville, Jr. Son of Rodger Baskerville, who is a younger brother of Charles Baskerville. Appears as a noble man in the beginning of the story, but has an evil plot in his head to kill his cousin, Henry. The goal is to claim the Baskervilles properties. His character is the round one, because you will never know that apparently he is the bad guy until the climax.

8.

Mrs. Vandeleur, also known as Beryl Stapleton, wife of Jack Stapleton but pretends to be his sister. Another round character. First she helped his husband with his plot until she realized that she is used as a tool in the plot, and then she helped Holmes by telling the location of which her husband might be hiding.

9.

John Barrymore, a housekeeper to the Baskervilles, a loyal servant. This one is also a static character.

10.

Eliza Selden/Barrymore, wife of John Barrymore. She is also a housekeeper in the Baskervilles Hall just like her husband. Another static character in this story.

11.

Selden, the escape convict who is wanted by the police. He is Elizas younger brother. This character has nothing to do with the case that Holmes is handling with, but by not handing him into the police, Henry and Watson gain some clue from John Barrymore about the death of Charles Baskerville which will lead into the climax. He is a criminal and died as one before he run away to South America, either to be a good citizen or to continue his career as a criminal, so I believe that he is another static character.

12.

Laura Lyons, once known corresponding with Charles Baskerville, but then having a relationship with Jack Stapleton without knowing that Miss Stapleton is actually Jacks wife. It is her letter dictated by Jack which led Charles to his death. Because she doesnt know that she is being used by Jack, she wont tell anything. But once she knows that Jack is not unmarried man, she told everything Holmes wanted to know. It makes her a round character.

13.

Lestrade, I believe he is a police officer. Appears almost in the end of the story to help Holmes with his Baskervilles case. There is not so much info about him, but because he doesnt experienced the climax, lets put him as a static character.
