What is Humanities? Etymology : Humanities comes from the Latin word "humanus" meaning human, cultured and refined.

To be "human" is to posses the qualities and attributes of man and have the feelings and dispositions proper to man. Humanities is the study of the different cultural aspects analyzes man's frailties in life and how this can be improved. Culture basically includes speech, knowledge, beliefs, arts, technologies, ideals, and rules. Its teaching, therefore, is essential for one to obtain the proper knowledge in his efforts to achieve the status of being a cultured man. What is Art? Etymology: Middle English art, from Old French art, from Latin artem, accusative of ars "art". Displaced native Middle English liste (art). Art is a term that describes a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, but here refers to the visual arts, which cover the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. The word art can describe several things: a study of creative skill, a process of using the creative skill, a product of the creative skill, or the audience's experience with the creative skill Theories of Art Mimetic theories: art as imitation or representation of nature. Expressive theories: art viewed as a representation or manifestation of the inner state of the artist. Formalist theories: the work of art viewed as an organic unity; i.e a self contained, selfjustifying entity. Processional theories: the making of works of art because the creative process is an inherently self-contained, self justifying process. Aestheticism: art exists for the sake of its beauty alone.

Pragmatic theories: art conceptualized in terms of its effects on its audience, to accomplish purposes such as the creation of specific shared experiences. Functions of Art The functions of art normally fall within three categories. These are personal, social or physical functions. These categories can, and (often) do, overlap in any given piece of art. The physical functions of art are most easily dealt with. Works of art that are created to perform some service have physical functions. Ex. Fijian war club, Japanese raku bowl, architecture, and any crafts and industrieal design. The social functions of art when it addresses aspects of (collective) life, as opposed to one person's point of view or experience. The personal functions of art are the most difficult to explain in any great detail. There are many of them, and they vary from person to person.An artist may create out of a need for selfexpression, or gratification. S/he might have wanted to communicate a thought or point to the viewer. Perhaps the artist was trying to provide an aesthetic experience, both for self and viewers. A piece might have been meant to "merely" entertain others. Sometimes a piece isn't meant to have any meaning at all. Likewise, the greatest Art is founded on profound Truths that express the wonder and beauty of our relationship to the universe. As Ayn Rand and Henri Matisse write;

Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments. An artist recreates those aspects of reality which represent his fundamental view of man's nature. (Ayn Rand, 'Art and Cognition') When we speak of Nature it is wrong to forget that we are ourselves a part of Nature. We ought to view ourselves with the same curiosity and openness with which we study a tree, the sky or a thought, because we too are linked to the entire universe. (Henri Matisse)
Our modern worldview, with its obsessive focus on Market Economics, Agriculture, and the

Ego has allowed us to become isolated from our true connection with Nature, the Cosmos and our place in the Universe. With many people now living in cities it seems that we have lost our connection to Nature, and thus we have lost our true foundations for how we evolved to live (which is a disturbing thought for the future survival of life on Earth). Though there have been many great artists and inspiring works of art throughout human

history, no art has ever been founded on what truly exists, as this knowledge had not been known. The Postmodern belief in no Absolute Truth has detrimentally affected modern Art, resulting in artistic confusion, lack of meaning and decay. Artists: Renaissance Fine Art: Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Caravaggio, Velazquez, Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens

Impressionism Fine Art: Francisco de Goya, Pierre-August Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol (Postmodern Art). Why we create art? They mention making art for fun and adventure; building bridges between themselves and the rest of humanity; reuniting and recording fragments of thought, feeling, and memory; and saying things that they cant express in any other way.
