Kiwi Rain by Rob Atlas
Robs just starting out in his
freelance career, but with shots
like this, we hope it isnt too long
before hes doing well. This was a
table-top set-up with a softbox as
the background. The kiwi fruit was
stuck on a needle and suspended
from the top of a crystal block,
which was flled with water, Rob
explains. I put my camera on a
tripod, set the self-timer and then
dripped water into the container
by using a can with holes in the
bottom. Pretty simple, really.

On the basis of the feedback
weve received so far, you
seem to like what were doing.
Even so, we have made a few changes to this issue.
Most notable is that were now going by the title
FPME. We think this gives the magazine a stronger
identity and ties in perfectly with our website
address. Also, in line with feedback, weve toned
down the technique and concentrated more on
the business side of freelancing with our Money
Matters feature. I hope you like the changes, and
please keep your comments coming.
Im particularly keen to hear from freelancers
who would like to contribute to FPME with words
and pictures. If you feel you could write an article
for the magazine,
please get in touch.

This is my son, who entered
a sunfower-growing
competition this year and
won! Being the sort of story
local newspapers love, I got
in touch with my local paper
and ofered to take a shot
for them. They obliged and
the picture, along with a
brief story, appeared in the
paper the following week,
netting me 30. OK, its not
a huge amount, but it only
took me 10 minutes to take
the picture and send it to
the paper. 180 an hour?
Sounds like a pretty decent
rate to me!

Dalesman, the countrys
best-selling regional
magazine, and its sister
title Cumbria are looking for
freelance contributions of
both pictures and words.
Both titles are put
together by a two-man
editorial team comprising
editor terry Fletcher and
picture editor Paul Jackson, so
they rely heavily on freelance
contributions for each issue.
We have a stock library of
images, which were always keen
to add to, admits terry, but Im
just as interested in hearing from
FPMe subscribers who can supply
complete articles of both words
and pictures, particularly with a
people-based theme.
Dalesman covers the three Ridings areas of
Yorkshire and concentrates largely on the areas
heritage and farming, terry continues. Cumbria
is a harder-edged title, which includes a lot of
outdoor sports including walking, climbing
and canoeing. So, in addition to well-known
locations in both areas, were also
looking for shots that
show these activities.

Rose looks for sharp calendar contributions
2006 MaY be just around the corner, but
in the world of calendar publishing 2006
is ancient history! amazingly, January
will see many calendar manufacturers
start looking for great shots for their 2008
series of products!
One such publisher is Rose of
Colchester, where publishing manager
Simon Williams is keen to see new images
from FPMe subscribers across of a wide
range of subject matter. We publish a
lot of calendars, so we need plenty of
pictures, he told us. Scenics, cars, glamour,
pets, farm animals, almost anything goes.
You can get a taste of the work that
Rose produce by visiting their website at

to point out that hed like to see new subjects
as well as more established sellers.
We accept both digital and flm
submissions, Simon explained. Digital
images should be uncompressed tIFFs or frst
generation JPeGs with a fle size of around

format, although 35mm is
acceptable for remote locations or wildlife.

Some of our contributors tend to be
rather trigger happy, which means that
quality sufers, Dan continued. My advice to
FPMes subscribers would be to photograph
something ordinary from an extraordinary
angle, rather than posting up popular
subjects, as these stand out far better on the
site, giving them a better chance of selling.

NEWS
OnlIne PICtuRe library Britainonview.com is looking for new
contributors to add to the 40,000 images currently held on fle. the
library ofers two avenues for freelancers; commissioned work and a
more traditional agency approach where the photographers work is
marketed in return for a 50/50 split on any revenue generated from
images sales.
We are continually updating the library with fresh imagery by acting
as an agent for photographers, explains Image editor Sarah Blackburn.
Were looking for high-quality images depicting British locations and
life. this can include well-known landmarks, countryside and coastline,
town and village scenes, events and festivals, sports, seasonal imagery
and details of architecture, fora and fauna. Images of people are also
accepted, but they need to have a signed model release form, unless
taken at large public events.
Sarah would initially like to see 20-30 Raw fles or tIFFs supplied on a
CD from potential contributors. If your work is accepted by the library,
they would hope youd be able to supply more images on a quarterly
basis, although this isnt essential.

the SeaRCh for the 2006 Wildlife Photographer of the Year
starts on January 10. now in its 43
rd
year, the competition is
organised by the natural history Museum and BBC Wildlife
magazine, attracting entries from all over the world. the
2005 competition saw success for a number of uK-based
nature photographers.
as FPMe went to press, details for the 2006 competition
were still being fnalised, but entries will be invited in a
wide range of categories and the closing date is March 31,
2006, with winners announced in June.
If you want to get your creative juices fowing, the cream
of the entries from the 2005 competition are currently
on show at the national history Museum, london until
april 23, 2006 and will be touring major towns around the
country in the coming months.

are great places to start to play.
However, there is a good chance that
your pages will be almost identical
to thousands of other peoples.
So you might want to take the
next step and start to create your
website with a unique design.
as soon as you start to think
about this, you are starting to get
serious. Sign up with an internet
service provider that ofers
broadband. your 15-20 a month will
get you a large amount of web space
and fast, easy access to it.
the other small but vital
investment is in a domain name. all
the web space weve discussed so far
is accessed by an obscure website
address. the address incorporates
the name of the internet provider
and is hard to remember.
you want www.yourname.com
or www.yourcompany.co.uk and to
get that you need to register your
own domain name. Choosing your
domain name can be stressful,
especially if your name is fairly
normal and was snapped up years
ago. try to fnd a web identity that
you will be happy with for life. you
can move house, move ofces and
get a new phone number, but your
website address will be the one
constant that you can use to keep
everybody else up to date.
internet service providers will
register a domain name for you. its
quick, easy and cheap, but prices
vary, so shop around. Registration
of a domain name costs as little as
10 for two years, but watch out for
higher costs to renew if you dont go
through the original broker.
Websites such as www.
easily.co.uk and www.uk2.net
ofer the facility to search for
a suitable domain name and
will register that name for
you. most companies ofer a free
service called web forwarding so
that you can still build your site on
the free space and then simply
point your new domain name to it.
Easily.co.uk allows you to administer
e-mail and domain forwarding
yourself via a control panel that
comes with your account. So www.
yourcompany.co.uk can be pointed
at your web page on free webspace
and e-mails to you@yourcompany.
co.uk can be forwarded to your free
e-mail account.

click again they can send you an e-mail.
if you invest a little time and money you
can sell them an image direct from your
website with all quality, copyright, terms
of use and payment issues taken care of
in one online form. the internet theres
never been anything like it.
the simplest website for a freelance
photographer will describe what you do,
show examples of your work and give
clear, detailed information about how
you can be contacted. this can all be
achieved on one single web page.
the next level will involve separating
these elements, and possibly adding
extra information like a biography or list
of clients, and putting them on diferent
pages, each one linked to all the others.
this is the frst move from a web page to
a website. its the diference between a
business card and a brochure.
Pictures can be organised into
galleries and interaction on the site
might be around customers enquiries:
day rates; availability; rights to pictures
etc. if youre feeling really brave, you can
create a messageboard and encourage
people to comment on your work.
if you have access to the internet,
either at home, at work or from a public
library, a business centre or an internet
caf, then you could have your own
website in minutes.

the most exciting self-promotion
opportunity ever. In this extract from his

can harness the power of the internet.

tripod is just one of the
longest-established
companies doing this, and it makes its money
by putting ads around the pages you create.
internet providers almost always ofer free
web space to their customers and this is paid
for in the cost of the subscription. Pay-as-you-
surf internet services usually only allow their
customers to work on their websites via their
own pay-per-minute connections so they
get revenue that way. a good
example of this
type of web space
is ofered at www.
virgin.net while www.
wanadoo.co.uk will
allow you to build a
website on its space
whether you connect
with Wanadoo or not.
all of these services
ofer websites that are
built using templates
viewed through your web
browser. the templates
are increasingly stylish and
sophisticated, although they
tend to cater more for the
personal homepage builder.
you will be ofered a selection of layouts
with colour co-ordinated graphics. text
editing tools allow you to change and format
the copy and there will be instructions on how
to upload pictures to the positions
pre-determined in the design of the pages.
all you have to do is decide what you
want to say and show.

diferent, this isnt the place to go into
great detail about exactly how to build
the website you need for your business.
Start by looking at dozens of other
photographers sites. Click around
them to see what happens and decide
what features you like and dont like.
bookmark your favourites and make
a list of the features you would like to
employ on your own site.
use the tutorials with your chosen
web editor to learn how to create your
website locally. its hardly more complex
than creating several Word documents
with tables and pictures and the new
areas of hyperlinking and navigation are
exciting and fun to learn.
then you can use the help sections
of your internet hosting service website
and the instructions for your
FtP software to work out how to
send the site to your web server
(the computer that actually
hosts your website).
General rules, such as the
need to keep image fle sizes
small, or linking each page of
your site to all the others, apply
to all good web design. the
practice of updating your site
regularly and posting new work
will keep your site looking fresh
and an interesting place for
clients to come back to.
if you want to sell photos
online you can join one of the
many online agencies that will allow
you to set up an account and add your
images to their stock. these agencies
will take care of website security and
handle online payments on your behalf.
you can learn about all this yourself,
of course, and your website can
integrate shopping cart and payment
technology with your galleries. but
the big advantage of working with
an agency is that it will promote itself
and more clients are more likely to see
your work. expecting large numbers
of customers to fnd your modest little Gettingthelook

buildinG youR own website will
give you a basic understanding of
the medium, the technology and the
potential. Html, the computer code
behind web pages, is a common
computer fle format and lots of software
can save a document as a web page. even
microsoft Word will convert documents
with images, tables and formatted
text into Html versions. at the same
time as popular, easy-to-use software
is becoming web-enabled, then the
specialised, once-complex web design
packages are becoming more user-
friendly. macromedias dreamweaver
can be downloaded for free trial from
the macromedia website at www.
macromedia.com and easy-to-follow user
guides will show you how to create a
simple web page in minutes. or theres a
free web editor at www.nvu.com.
you will need to be able to adjust the
size, resolution and compression of your
images to make them suitable for use on
the web. the resolution, or grain, to use
a photography term, of web images is
72 dots per inch (dPi) and the common
fle format is the compressed JPeG fle.
So, its important that your image editor
is capable of making these from other
types of image fle.
adobes Photoshop has managed to
earn itself the industry standard tag
but it is quite expensive. Corels Paint
Shop Pro X is as good in many ways but
much cheaper. again, trial versions can
be downloaded from their respective
developers website, or you can get a free
image editor via www.irfanview.com.
and fnally, you might fnd you need
a small program on your computer for
transferring web page fles from your
local computer, the one on your desk,
to the one that hosts your site on the
internet. the process used for this is
called File transfer Protocol (FtP) and
most of the services that host websites
will provide details on how to upload
your web pages using this system.
dreamweaver can upload fles via FtP,
but if you create a web page with a word
processor then youll need a separate FtP
program. theres a free PC-only one on
the website at www.ipswitch.com.

your traditional marketing plan that it
becomes really efective.
make sure that your web address
is very prominent on your business
card, letterhead, invoices and print
advertisements. your photographs,
transparencies and Cds must also
carry your web address and write it
on the back of envelopes, along with
the return address. include it in photo
credit information so that published
images can lead people to your site.
mention your website to clients
on the phone and make sure its
at the bottom of every e-mail you
send. Work out how to add your web
address to your e-mail signature and
do everything you can to ensure
recipients can click on the address and
go straight to your site.
the more people know about your
website, the more enquiries youre
likely to receive. and thats one thing
to bear in mind, customer service. if
your site generates lots of messages,
you should be prepared to handle
them quickly and courteously. imagine
getting a couple of dozen enthusiastic
enquiries a day its the kind of
problem that many photographers
would love to have!

CeliAzulek
Celi took up photography fve years ago and
has recently started selling images. This sale
took a great deal of efort, though. This was
one of a number of shots I took of a mouse
that I had found as a newborn with its dead
mother. It had just started to grow fur, Celi
explains. It took eight days of giving it goats
milk to get it on to solid food (which meant
getting up at 4am for a night feed!). Id let her
go by this point, but she kept on coming back,
so I made a flm set for her. This was taken at
11pm, when she was at her most active.
The efort has paid of, Celi continues. The
photographs have attracted a considerable
amount of interest the Woodland Trust is
using one of them. I may be wrong, but I think
the mouse seems to look at the camera in a
completely diferent way because she wasnt
wary like a wild mouse would have been.

PeTers a newcomer to the freelance scene, but has been a keen photographer
for some 40 years. since he started to market his work earlier this year, hes had
a number of successes via the Fotolibra picture library, including this one of
Westminster, photographed from the London eye.
The image was taken during a visit to London in October 2001 to get a visa
for a holiday in India, explains Peter. The original scene had a pale sky, so as
well as applying Unsharp Mask, I boosted it in Photoshop to add some extra
punch. Im sure this helped to sell the shot.
It was sold for use in a limited-edition brochure for a London-based
company. I was paid 50. Better still, I subsequently sold some further images
that I took on the Indian holiday I was in London to pick the visa up for!
MartinCarlsson
OK, so we might not all have a partner as
photogenic as Martins, but this does show how
taking pictures of family and friends can earn
you money. This is suzanne, Martins wife, who
also happens to be one of scotlands leading
models. Martin photographed her on Culzean
Beach in July. The shot was taken late in the
afternoon, he explains, I used fll-in fash with
a yellow tinted gel to give it a warm-up efect.

Martin turned his back on a successful
career in investment banking to concentrate
on photography and has enjoyed plenty of
success since he became freelance in 2003. As
well as photographing his wife, he also focuses

ClaireMorgan
CLAIre has made cash from her camera by entering photographic
competitions. When FPMe got in touch, she had just been crowned
Practical Photographys Photographer of the Year 2005, scooping her
4000 worth of holiday vouchers. This success is the pinnacle of a
photographic career that started when she was just 11.
Now 25, south African-born Claire (left) has done a variety of jobs,
from photographic teacher to working with an orchestra, and has
travelled extensively. shes lived in Paris, London and currently resides
in Vienna, where she sells her shots in a local souvenir shop and also
plans to have her frst exhibition next year.
The images you see here were published in Digital Photo magazine
after the editor had spotted Claires work on a website. Theyre both
self-portraits and the magazine used them across a double page
spread in their Gallery section. I was paid 120, she explained.

pub, lit from the side by spotlights. The image was manipulated in
Photoshop Cs. I turned it black & white, then added a sepia tone using
Photoshops Photo Filter options. Finally, I ran it through Neat Image to
give the skin a silky look.

How do you like submissions to be
presented?
Black & white prints should be minimum size
10x8in, maximum size 12x16in. Inkjet prints can

be either A4 or A3. Label all prints on the reverse
with full name and address, daytime telephone
number and e-mail address, and enclose a list of
brief captions.
Digital images or scans should be TIFF fles,
300dpi, Mac compatible, no bigger than A4.
Digital black & white fles will always reproduce
better if saved as RGB or CMYK as opposed to
greyscale. Please label any CD with full name and
address, daytime telephone number and e-mail
address. A list of brief captions to each image
should be enclosed either separately or saved as
a Word document on the CD. An inkjet printout
of thumbnails of the images should also be
enclosed with the submission. Always enclose a
stamped, addressed envelope if you would like
your submission returned.
Whats the biggest mistake potential
freelancers make?
1) Not studying the magazine before phoning.
2) Writing an article without consulting the
editor frst. We judge an idea on the pictures
frst, writing second, so always phone or
e-mail before writing something, as your
idea might not tally with the editors
requirements, or may even double up
with something already commissioned
from another contributor. 3) Sending
a submission by ordinary post. Always
send at least Recorded Delivery,
preferably Special Delivery.
Whats the potential for
freelancers supplying words as
well as pictures?
Better than pictures alone. Dont be
put of if you are an inexperienced
writer we will always provide a
detailed brief to help you to match
our house style.

What is the overall freelance potential on
Practical Photography?
Its pretty good. Were always on the look out for
great images that can illustrate a technique or
just make people go wow, I wish Id taken that.
What sections of the magazine can
freelancers contribute to?
Our technique section, Take Better Pictures, is one
area where freelancers can contribute, especially
if they have a specifc skill or method that would
be of interest to keen photo enthusiasts.
Theres always the chance to get an image into
our Gallery section and images that work well on
the cover are also hard to fnd. For cover shots its
important to remember that the logo needs to
stand out at the top of the picture and there will
be teasers down the left-hand side. Frequently
used subjects are landscape, wildlife, and
portraits, but that doesnt rule other subjects out.
What sort of images do you have an
on-going need for?
We probably use landscapes more than anything
because its such a popular subject, but wildlife
is also regularly featured. To be honest, any
inventive imagery is great. I like to see pictures of
everyday objects or places that have been shot
in a really creative way. Also remember that we
try to be reasonably seasonal and were working
about two months ahead of ourselves. So, for
spring images, you should be sending them into
us around February.
What type of images dont you want to see
from freelance contributors?
Average ones. Hideously manipulated
photographs. Anything that is dull, predictable or
technically fawed.

Photography is, for them, a
passion and a huge creative outlet.
They see pictures everywhere and
are always craving inspiration
and have a desire to improve
whatever their current level and
time constraints.
How do you like submissions to be
presented?
Transparencies are still fne, but CDs with high-
resolution images are also more than acceptable.
The images should be as large as possible (around
300dpi at A4), but please dont interpolate them
or ruin them with a ridiculous amount of Unsharp
Mask. All images (digital or flm) should be
accompanied by a list that gives all the relevant
details: where, when, and how the picture was
taken. And write down a daytime telephone
number and an e-mail address too, please.
All CDs must be accompanied by an index sheet
of thumbnail pics. Keep everything as simple and
easy to access as possible. Dont send more than
10 to 15 pictures. Id rather see six brilliant pictures
than 106 average ones.
Whats the biggest
mistake potential
freelancers make?
Sending too many pictures,
rather than a shortlist of their
best. Their best might be
among the mix, but youre
less likely to be knocked
out by the quality of the
submission if there are
loads of average shots in
there as well.
Whats the potential
for freelancers
supplying words as
well as pictures?
Im defnitely
interested in hearing
from anyone who
thinks theyre able to
put words and pictures
together although they must be prepared to
work to a tight brief so their copy is in tune with
the PP house style. And sometimes Id be asking
for behind-the scenes shots too so they cant be
camera shy themselves!

High. About 80% of images are submitted by freelancers.
What sort of images do you have an on-going need for?
Any excellent quality stand-alone images, or shots showing
photographic technique and also comparison shots (eg the same shot
with and without fll-fash). All images must be taken with Canon EOS
cameras (though not necessarily Canon lenses).
What type of images are you looking for right now?

How do you like submissions to be presented?
Our picture library is now entirely digital, so flm images need to be
scanned. Images should be submitted as TIFF or JPEG fles on a Mac
compatible CD or DVD. Resolution should be 10Mb-50Mb at 300dpi,
uncompressed, unsharpened, in Adobe RGB colour space. Preferably
the technical information (camera, lens, exposure etc) and specifc
technique or caption should be attached to each image fle using
EXIF. Otherwise, a covering letter should provide this information for
each image. Each submission should be accompanied by a printout
of thumbnails of the images contained on the CD. Your full name,
address and e-mail should be attached to both the CD and the
printout. Please DO NOT send image fles by e-mail.

Most articles are written in-house, but we are open to submissions,

I
n the last issue of FPMe, we introduced you to the
delights of Raw digital fles, and why you should be
shooting with them. While there are plenty of upsides
to shooting Raw, one major downside is that they can take
longer to process on your computer. this is where Batch
processing comes in, especially when youve shot a number
of images which all require the same work carrying out on
them. here, using an Apple Mac and Photoshop CS, weve
put together a step-by-step guide that will dramatically
reduce the time you spend in front of your computer.

CREATE AN ACTION. Now, select the New Action
symbol at the bottom of the Palette or click on the
Palette Menu and choose New Action. The New
Action window
appears. Give
your action
a name, in
this case, Raw
Files, and then
choose the
set youve just
created from
the drop down
menu. Click
Record. Youll
see that your
new action has
been added
to the list in
the Actions
Palette.
HOW TO DO IT STEP-BY-STEP

OPEN A RAW IMAGE. Go to one of the Raw fles you want to
work on and double-click it to open Photoshops Raw fles
window. Once its open, make sure Selected Image is chosen
on the Settings bar. Any changes you make to the image will be
recorded as part of the Action. You can be as simple or detailed
as you wish with the number of changes you make. Once youre
happy
with the
alterations
youve made,
click OK.

Photoshops
Actions Palette,
which is opened
by going to
Window-Actions.

PUT THE KETTLE ON.
Photoshop will now open
each image and apply the
changes you specifed within the
action. As Raw fles are, by their
very nature, large in size, batch
processing can take a while go
and make yourself a cup of tea
while Photoshop does the hard
work for you!
TOP TIPS
HTHERES NO LIMIT! Using Batch
processing doesnt have to be
limited to working with Raw fles.
You may, for example, have a
selection of TIFFs that youd like to
apply a certain efect to, or want a
set of JPEGs re-sizing for web use.
This can be done by frst applying
an action and then using the Batch
command in the same way.
HSPEED THINGS UP. You can select quick keys
to access an action without having to use the
Actions Palette. With the Actions Palette open,
select the action you want to assign a quick key
to by clicking it once and then, from palette
menu box, select Action Options. Select a
Function Key, using Shift and/or Command if
necessary, then click OK. The action can then
be accessed by pressing this key.

SAVE THE CHANGES.
Once the fle has
opened in Photoshop,
choose File-Save As and
save the image as a TIFF,
or whatever fle type you
require. Again, this will be
saved as part of the action.
You can continue to make
changes to the fle within
Photoshop using features
not available in the Raw
fles window. Once youre
fnally happy with all the
changes, close the image
and go back to the Actions
Palette. Click Stop at the
bottom of the palette to
end the Action recording.

CREATE TWO FOLDERS. Now, with the
Action set up, you can apply the same
alterations to all the remaining fles by
using Photoshops Batch command. Youll
need to create two folders. One with all the
Raw images in, and a second to save the
converted images into. You can also now
close the Action palette if space is tight on
the desktop.

GET BATCHING! Select File-
Automate-Batch to bring up
the Batch processing window.
At the top of the window, choose
the Set and Action youve created
in steps 1-5. In this case we named
the set FPME Actions and named
the Action Raw Files. Now, go to
Source, select Folder and then
click Choose and locate the folder
on your hard drive with the Raw
images in. Then do the same in
Destination, but this time choose
the second folder to save your
converted images into. Finally,
make sure the Override Action
Open Commands is ticked. If it
isnt, the same fle will be opened
again and again. Click OK.
HMADE A MISTAKE? If you make a
mistake while defning an action,
go to the Actions Palette menu by
clicking the black triangle in the top
right hand corner of the palette,
and select Record Again.

Jet Tec printer inks

Buying an inkjet printer is relatively
cheap, but feeding them with inks isnt.
These Jet Tec inks cost substantially less
than own-brand versions and, thanks to
some clever technology which enables
the printer to extract more ink from the
cartridge, are claimed to give 30% longer
life. So wheres the catch?
Well, in our tests using an Epson
CX3200 printer, there didnt seem to be
one. When the low ink symbol appeared,
the cartridges just kept on printing!
Theres no discernible diference in print
quality either, even when printing at
high-quality photo resolution.
Jet Tec are available for most Epson,
Canon, HP and Lexmark inkjet printers.

digital camera and thought Im sure the
subject wasnt that colour. This is exactly
why QP Cards were invented.

enemy. On lenses and flters it can cause
fare, on SLR mirrors it degrades the
viewfnder image and on CCDs it causes
black spots which have to be removed in
an image editing program.

could be for you. This PC and Mac
compatible unit reads and writes
seven popular card formats including
CompactFlash, SmartMedia and Memory
Stick, and can also be used to read or
write a standard 3.5 foppy disk.
This level of fexibility is great, but
using a USB connection means that
transfer speeds are slow. With a transfer
rate of 12 Megabits per second, a 1Gb
CompactFlash card took over 20 minutes
to copy its contents on to a hard drive,

Kaiser Digishield

Digital cameras may be revolutionising
the way we take pictures, but they do
have problems. Viewing LCD images in
bright sun is one, which is where the
Digishield comes in.
Attaching via the cameras tripod
bush (which can still be used), the shield
can be adapted to ft most models,
although we found it wasnt suitable for
a pro-spec SLR with a contoured battery
pack. When not in use, the Digishield can
be folded fat. Its not ideal if you want to
constantly take and review pictures, but
if you want to take a few frames, then
review, its well worth it. The Digishield is
available in two sizes: for LCDs up to 1.5
wide, and for LCDs between 1.6 and 1.8.

handing some of it back. However, the fact of the matter is, once youre
earning money from your photography, you need to let HM Revenue &
Customs (formerly the inland Revenue) know, no matter how small the amount.
of course, quite how much you pay in tax, and what in turn you claim back,
depends on your individual circumstances. For the purposes of this feature, weve split
freelancers into two distinct groups: those who make a living from their photography
and those who use the sales of their images to supplement their main income.

a few photography jobs on the side, then this
applies to you. essentially, all of the income you
generate from your photography is liable to tax,
although this fgure will be calculated less any
expenses you incur from doing the work.
so, for example, if you were asked to
photograph a wedding and needed to hire a suit
for the occasion, youd be able to claim for the
hire, along with the cost of flm, processing and
petrol you put in your car to drive to the church
and reception. For these reasons its vital that you
keep any relevant receipts, as well as generating
an invoice for the work carried out.
This may sound time-consuming and, in fact,
it is, but its an easy way of keeping track of what
you earn and what you spend, which will stand
you in good stead when it comes to flling out
your self Assessment tax return.

either case youll have to pay Class 2 and Class 4
National insurance.
Class 2 insurance is currently 2.10 a week
and is typically collected through monthly direct
debit or by a quarterly bill. Class 4 is calculated
on your profts and is paid at the end of the tax
year. if youre in a partnership, each partner will
pay a Class 4 contribution, plus corporation tax
which is calculated on the partnership profts.
youll also have to fll in a self Assessment tax
return, either in paper form or online.
As a business, you are entitled to allowances.

equipment, which could include photographic
equipment, cars, computers and ofce furniture
plus, if youre in your frst year of trading, youll
qualify for First year Allowances (FyAs) which
allow a greater proportion or even all of your
outlay to qualify for relief.
its crucial that you keep accurate records
of all invoices and expenses related to your
business as your tax returns are likely to be much
more involved than those earning a few quid as
an extra income. These records will also need to
be kept for at least fve years.
setting up a business bank account is
advised, so you can keep the money separate
from your personal accounts. Finally, you may
want or need to register for vAT, something well
cover in more detail in the next issue.
one thing you do have to be careful about
is who you work for when youre self-employed.
if, for example, you just work for one employer,
albeit diferent departments, you may still be
classed as being employed, so your taxation
needs to be dealt with by your employer, not you.
