POETRY RECITAL PROJECT

Guidelines for Planning and Implementation Dr. Marjorie Evasco I. Individual pre-recital tasks and requirements: First Week A. Read the given anthology of poems and from the single-author book or anthology assigned to your group, choose three poems you can learn and recite in an oral performance in front of an audience. B. Write out, by order of preference, the complete titles of the poems and their corresponding authors on a 4x 6 index card. For example: (from Language for a New Century: Poems from the Middle East and Beyond) 1. Variations in the Theme of Love by Kim Su-Yng 2. Desire by Mureed Barghouty 3. The Red Grapefruit by Agnes Lam Submit this card to your group director, who will submit the choices to the teacher for final approval of the poem you will recite for your midterm poetry exam. C. Once approved, study the poems sound and sense and start learning how to recite the poem correctly. Commit to memory the poem for the poetry recital, learning it by heart and with heart, so that you will be confident in your oral delivery of the poem. D. Do further research on the life and books of your poet and write on a 4x 6 index card five of the most important and interesting information you have gathered. Try to get a photo of your author on the internet, too. At the back of this index card, write a short paragraph on the specific literary reasons why you chose the poem, using what you have already learned from the course about poetry. Submit this card to the teacher for evaluation and possible assistance. E. Practice reciting the poem. If you are reciting from memory, make sure that your performance shows that you have mastered the poem with precision. Listen to your teachers advice regarding pronunciation and phrasing during the rehearsals she will attend. Your individual performance will be judged according to how you show your understanding of the sensual, emotional and intellectual content and form of the poem. It is best to practice with someone else, especially one with a good ear for poetry.

F. Prepare your presentation powerpoint slides in a USB and make sure you have: 1. A good photo of your author, and a bullet point list of three to five important bio/biblio data 2. Your literary and personal reasons for choosing the poem for your recital 3. The poems text formatted in the same way it is found on the printed page. Please do not alter the format because it is not your poem. Alterations will make you lose points. Submit this USB on your first group meeting to your groups production-in-charge for consolidation with the groups ppt presentation. II. Group pre-recital tasks and requirements: Second and Third Weeks A. Meet with your group during the class sessions given for project preparations. Read aloud your poem to your group, then inform them of how you understand your poems content and form. The first group meeting is where each of you will inform each other of your poems, and brainstorm for a theme that would be the organizing principle of the flow of the groups poetry recital program. The group, early in the project, decides on their point persons and assigns each member a task to do towards the implementation and completion of the project. At the end of the group meeting, submit to the teacher on a whole sheet of paper the following: 1. Point person/s of the group 2. Names of group members, each with specific task assignments s/he is responsible for, i.e. poster, program, bookmark invitation and give-away, music, consolidated groups powerpoint presentation, sound system, lights, (Optional: snack food and recital venue dcor and performance props, except candles and incense in rooms with smoke and fire detectors) 3. Theme of the groups Poetry Recital Program stated in a catchy title 4. Tentative flow of the program with names of students and the poem/title s/he will recite, and color of business attire. B. When your group project plan is approved by the teacher, post online your groups poster and program flow in the class egroup. Continue working with the group for reading rehearsals, technical (to determine the duration of the entire presentation) and a dress rehearsal a week prior to the oral performance project/exam. Each group should use the class hour within which to prepare the presentation (which should not be more than 15 mins.), deliver the presentation (not more than 60 mins.), and evaluate the presentation (not more than 10 mins.) Point person/s will monitor everyone in terms of the assigned tasks and make sure that a day before the oral performance exam, everything is ready and in place. If there

are potential problems, inform the teacher for solution/s. The point person/s will also submit to the teacher the groups consolidated powerpoint presentation in a CD, together with a hard copy of the poster, program, and bookmark giveaway. Your overall group grade will be judged according to the quality of your ideas in the planning stage and the social and organizational skills you show in the implementation of the poetry recital group project. III. Poetry Recital: A group project for a Midterm Exam on the Fourth Week A. On the day of your groups performance, come at least 10 mins. before the class starts and be in your business attire or costume agreed upon by your group, and in the color scheme your group has decided on. Be fully ready and confident to deliver your part of the poetry recital. You have this one chance of being in full control of your own performance. B. When your part is on, come to the front of the venue and begin your powerpoint presentation about your author and your thoughts on why you selected the poem. DO NOT READ FROM THE POWERPOINT SLIDES. DO NOT CUT YOUR CONNECTION WITH YOUR AUDIENCE. Recite the poem with all the best skills you have, and in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear and appreciate. The poetry recital will be graded by your peers (those who are not performing for the day), external evaluators from the Literature Department, and by the teacher. They will also choose the best performer for your group, who will be given a special prize. C. At the end of your groups performance, your director will consolidate each members short reflection on the overall quality of your project, from planning to implementation. S/he will also give your group a reasonable and earned grade. D. Participate in the class discussion on the benefits of the project, both on the individual and group work levels. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY LEARNING A MEMORABLE POEM BY HEART! N.B. If you have any questions about the guidelines, please consult with me. PLEASE DO NOT make any changes in the approved poem/poet unless you clear the changes with me two weeks before the poetry recital schedule.
