: Labour of love
meets. He is studying at university, doing a parttime job and has a girlfriend who he doesnt get along with at all. She is always complaining and they are famous in college for their fights. Then bang, he meets this girl and has the best night of his life with her. So he is just like a regular guy you will see around today who is a bit of a multi-tasker, a little moody and busy with stuff. He is just trying to get through the day without making a mess of things. So these are the three different characters, which are well etched out for me. It was interesting and exciting. It was almost like a triple role. Could Javed, Krish and Govind be friends if they met? (Laughs) I am not too sure about Javed and Govind being friends. They are polar opposites. Maybe Krish could be friends with both of them, though, because he is somewhere in the middle, personality-wise. Which of the three stories is the most emotionally touching? Honestly, there is very little melodrama in the film. The film is largely entertaining in its format. Obviously there will be some emotion because it is about love, especially in the last portion, but even that is not very dramatic in nature. We have kept it a little bouncy and upbeat as a film. The whole approach was to do a fun take on three eras because otherwise I think it can get a bit much, serious and boring. I think only the last 15 minutes of the film have some seriously emotional scenes. So all three stories are quirky? Yes, they are all pretty interesting in their own way. I think that Kunals strengths have always been that he is very good with moments and with one-liners. If you remember, he used shayari in his film Fanaa really well. The poetry in this is very colloquial, its not heavy duty or serious or intellectual stuff. It is the kind of thing someone walking down the street would say, which I think is a lot more relatable. There is an element of fun in all the stories.

All three stories are different from each other

Which is your favourite scene in Teri Meri Kahaani? (Thinks) There is a scene in the 1960s episode where Govind has found himself a gig at a big party. (You know how at that time there used to be live bands). He is there strumming the guitar and in comes the heroine. He gets all excited and a bit drunk before going into the entire song, which is a take off I really love that portion. There is another portion where Javed is telling his friends how it is wonderful that the British have come into India and that we are not being ruled by them, but they are working for us because they are making roads and buildings, and putting electricity everywhere. He feels they are more like labourers. That is contrary to how the rest of the country was looking at things. That, I think, was a funny take on it. Do you get nervous before doing a scene and how do you deal with it? Honestly, I have days where I am completely out there and looking forward to a challenge. Then there are days where you are kind of wondering how to put it together. I think an actors process is driven by his mood and the situation. So there is no set pattern for me, but obviously there is always a certain amount of anxiousness or excitement before you do something new. You are not sure how you want to do it, but it is always beautiful when you play a part you dont know how you are gonna do. That is what brings out something new for you. If you didnt get it right the first time, you can try something new. It is interesting to be in that space, which is a bit unpredictable; it is a bit scary but it is more exciting. I think eventually it brings out something fresher. Which other films do you have on the way? I am going to be starting a film with Band Baaja Baarat director Maneesh Sharma, which will be for Yash Raj Films, in July. I am also doing another film with Shaitan director Bejoy Nambiar. That is a very edgy film, more like what I did with Kaminey, because I like breaking away from the usual stuff once in a while. What do you like doing in your spare time? I am a big music person, I watch a lot of movies, I like spending time with family and friends. I like lounging at a friends place, doing nothing and going for drives. You know, the regular stuff. Like everyone else, I sometimes like doing nothing. What are your cooking skills like? (Laughs) The challenge is not me cooking, but who is going to eat what I cook. I am actually good at making aloo parathas. They are really oily, really fattening and really tasty. Combined with mango achar and lassi, that I can do very well. I hear you are a huge fan of TV show Friends. Is that true and who is your favourite character? Friends is just a classic. It is very difficult to choose a character. I was in love with how Chandler was, then I thought Joey was hilarious and then Ross did a lot of funny things. Obviously Rachel is everyones dream woman I think Jennifer Aniston was fantastic as Rachel, so I like her a lot. Finally, give us a message for your army of fans known as the Shanatics? They are like fuel for me. When I am really tired or if I have had a hard day, seeing some of their tweets and reading their reactions makes me wake up and work harder. There is just so much unconditional love there. So give my love to them. I feel very proud of the way they are and the way they support me. It makes me feel very happy. Teri Meri Kahaani is in cinemas now.

Starring: Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Ritwik Sahore Director: Rajesh Mapuskar
THERE have been innumerable movies about the struggles of mothers in Indian cinema, but very few about fathers. The team behind monster hit movie 3 Idiots have now come up with a film that superbly explores the father-son bond in an original way. Despite not having very much money, honest father Rusy (Sharman Joshi) will do all he can to nurture the cricketing talent of his young son Kayo (Ritwik Sahore). To fulfil his sons dreams of going to a training camp in London and playing at Lords, Rusy needs to come up with big money quickly and the only way he can do this is to steal Sachin Tendulkars Ferrari for a few hours for a local gangster/policians wedding. A comedy of errors ensues and we learn about Rusys own relationship with his father (Boman Irani). The movie makes you smile from the very first scene and offers up many memorable moments. Just like 3 Idiots and the Munnabhai movies, Ferrari Ki Sawaari strikes a fine balance between humour and emotion, and superb performances from the entire cast elevate the story to a higher level. Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani, in particular, deliver arguably the best performances of their respective careers. The fact that the music could have been better and the movie is longer than it needed to be are minor flaws. Watch this small movie with a big heart.

FERRARI KI SAWAARI

If you could romance one of the three girls, played by Priyanka Chopra, from the different eras in real life, which would it be? (Laughs) That is a difficult one, man. Of the three, probably the girl in 2012, Radha, because she is a character from today who would think and behave like me. I would probably like to come across a girl like that because she feels very relatable. She is chilled out, normal and someone you can have conversations with. That is how Krish and Radha kind of get along because they bump into one another, spend time together and there is just a vibe between them. There is something casual and easy in Radha that I like.

Dancing Darsheel

POPULAR actor Darsheel Safary is showing off his dancing skills on the new series of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. The Taare Zameen Par star, now 15, says he doesnt want any special treatment from the judges, who include Bollywood personalities Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar, for being the youngest contestant on the show.

DVD release: Agent Vinod

ACTION movie Agent Vinod has been released on DVD by Eros International and is available to buy now. The globe-trotting adventure sees Saif Ali Khan playing a secret agent who is trying to unravel an international conspiracy. There are some great action set pieces and scenic locations. The major downside is that there are no DVD extras, which is a shame because this is a movie that had a lot of scope to deliver some.
