"ART ABOARD!"--NASA ART RIDES THE RAILS TO TOUR U.S.

A touring exhibit of NASA Art will open at Washington DC's

Union Station from July 21-25 on Artrain, the nation's only
traveling art museum on a train. The three-year exhibit,
entitled "Artistry of Space," will travel to more than 120
communities in 48 states.

A press preview of the exhibit will take place on Monday,

July 19, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The opening of the exhibit will
take place on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at 6:30 p.m. Reporters are
invited to both events, which will be held on Track 10 of Union
Station.

The "Artistry of Space" exhibit will feature 78 works from

the collections of NASA and the National Air and Space Museum.
The collection will include works by Norman Rockwell, Stephen
Sprouse, Robert Rauschenberg, Jamie Wyeth and Andy Warhol. The
exhibit will also feature the music of jazz musician Jane Ira
Bloom, who composed a work commissioned by NASA in the late 1980s.
The NASA Art Program commissioned most artists featured in the
exhibit.

Speakers at Monday's press preview will be:

* Paula Cleggett, NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Public

Affairs
* Bud Liebler, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Daimler Chrysler
* Deb Polich, President, Artrain

Artists expected to attend the preview include Chakaia

Booker, James Dean, Linda Draper, Mary Edna Fraser, Pamela Lee,
Peter Nisbet, Lonny Schiff, Howard Siskowitz and Mindy Weisel.
Astronaut Roger Crouch also will attend.

Artrain will be open to the public July 21 to July 23 from 10

a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Track 27. It will
continue on July 24 and July 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Track
10.

The opening of "Artistry of Space" coincides with the 30th

anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and there will be works
featured on the train from that period. After the kick-off in
Washington, DC, the train will begin its tour in the northeastern
United States:

Since its inception in 1962, the NASA Art Program has been
commissioning artists to document events for the Agency. Artists
are given a small honorarium to create their works, which are
exhibited at galleries and museums around the country. Recent
artists commissioned have included Mike and Doug Starn, Vija
Celmins and, most recently, photographer Annie Leibovitz and
singer/songwriter Judy Collins.

Artrain aims to bring art to communities that do not have

access to art museums. The organization fosters art-education
programs and builds relationships with local and regional arts
councils around the country. Since its founding in 1971, Artrain
has attracted over 2.6 million viewers in 44 states.
