NEW CENTER AIMS TO IMPROVE FOOD IN SPACE AND ON EARTH

NASA has selected Iowa State University, Ames, IA, to head

up research that could lead to better food for astronauts and
safer, more nutritious packaged foods for everyone. Iowa State
will head the National Food Technology Commercial Space Center,
working to improve food for long duration space missions and to
enhance the packaging, preparation and storage of commercially
produced food. As space flight evolves from short-duration Space
Shuttle missions to extended habitation aboard the International
Space Station, NASA must provide astronauts with better tasting,
more nutritious food that is lighter in weight, easier to store,
and has a longer shelf-life.

Improvements in the shelf life and safety of food for space

flight could lead to similar improvements in commercially produced
and packaged food available to the public. Partnerships with the
private sector will be essential elements of the Food Technology
Center, in addition to the academic institution's own resources.

ITEM 2 - KSC/AIR FORCE TEAM RECEIVES HAMMER AWARD (REPLAY)

The Hammer Award was presented to Kennedy Space Center and 45th
Space Wing On July 16, 1999. The award was made to the joint
NASA/Air Force team that established the Joint Base Operations and
Support Contract (J-BOSC) Source Evaluation Board.

ITEM 3 - ARTRAIN B-ROLL (REPLAY)

Artrain USA is the nation's only traveling art museum. It is

beginning its Artistry of Space exhibit with work commissioned by
the NASA Art Program and the National Air and Space Museum art
collections. The premiere on July 20, 1999 at Union Station,
Washington, DC, coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Apollo
11 moon landing. There are 78 works spanning three decades that
convey the excitement of space exploration.

ITEM 5 - STS-93 COMMANDER EILEEN COLLINS AT WHITE HOUSE (REPLAY)

Astronaut Eileen Collins was named Commander of the STS-93 at a

White House press conference on March 5, 1998. This footage
includes highlights from that conference. Participants included
the President and Mrs. Clinton and NASA Administrator Daniel S.
Goldin.
