Martha Crisler

Objectives: 1. Students will be able to write poems based off of This Old Man nursery rhyme 2. Students will write poems with correct punctuation 3. Students will be able to use rhyming words and patterns
Introduction (hook):

Have you ever noticed how Twinkle, Twinkle and ABCs have the same tune? We will be creating a poem based off of This Old Man nursery song.

Demonstration/model:

1. As a class, we will review the nursery rhyme/song, This Old Man This old man, he played one, He played knick-knack On my thumb. CHORUS With a knick-knack, paddy whack, Give a dog a bone, This old man came rolling home. This old man, he played two, He played knick-knack On my shoe. CHORUS This old man, he played three, He played knick-knack on my knee. CHORUS This old man, he played four, He played knick-knack on my door. CHORUS This old man, he played five, He played knick-knack on my hive. CHORUS

1. Students will review the pattern that The Old Man has by looking at the first stanza: This old man, he played one, He played knick-knack On my thumb -The stanza has a pattern of ABA with the first and last line rhyming. -The first line is adjective, noun, followed by a noun, verb and the noun performing that action -The second line talk about the noun mentioned in the first line performing a different action -The third line talks about what the noun is performing the action on 2. The first stanza will be modeled and as a class, we will rewrite it using our own words and implementing the pattern. -This old man, he played one, This little dog, he called home He played knick-knack He called long distance On my thumb On my phone

Guided lesson:

1. The students will then take a look at the chorus together as a class and dissect it with the teacher. -With a knick-knack, paddy whack, Give a dog a bone, This old man came rolling home.

2. Students will look at the pattern that the chorus follows. (ABB, the middle and last line rhyme) -The first line repeats what the noun did in line two from the first stanza, followed by a combination of words that rhyme with the action. -The second line is a verb, noun, noun -The last line of the chorus repeats the adjective and noun

from the first line of the first stanza and the noun performing another action, which rhymes with the last word of the previous line.
Guided Practice:

1. Students will break down the chorus and rewrite it following the same pattern. -With a knick-knack, paddy whack With a phone dial, dially ack Give the dog a bone Give me back my phone This old man came rolling home, This little dog went flying home 2. Students will complete the nursery rhyme (up to This old man, he played five.

Share & Review:

Once all the students have completed their poems, the students will have the option to add pictures. Then, they will share their poems with their shoulder partners. The first stanza and chorus will be as follows: This little dog, he called home He called long distance On my phone With a phone dial, dially ack Give me back my phone This little dog went flying home The poems will be published and posted on the classrooms bulletin board.
