12) IES MEDITERRANEO, CARTAGENA

First term: September December 2011 1. Logo contest. Under the guidance of our art teacher, prof. Salvador Martnez, the students created their own logos for the project. The winner was student Paula Oton, 1st of Bachillerato; her logo representing our Centre at the meeting in Trieste, was elected winner to represent the project. 2. Survey to identify inequality situations in the towns or countries of each partner. Walking around your neighbourhood and What do you think? surveys were conducted to check if the students were able to detect situations of inequality or discrimination. 3. Web page design and blog. The website of the project and the blog, vehicles of communication in which the different activities carried out by each of the partners are collected, have been designed and are updated by Carmen Torres, teacher at IES Mediterrneo. 4. Theme and title of Solidarity Concert 2012. We had first meetings of teachers and students to choose the theme and the title of the 2012 Solidarity Concert. We chose to criticize the inequalities under the title All different but the same. 5. Solidarity Market. We carried out various activities in different classes to increase the students awareness that objects for later sale should be donated, in order to raise funds for the sponsored children. 6. First project meeting in Trieste (Italy) from 15th to 19th November 2011. First meeting with all project partners, to establish the bases of the same and the activities, was carried out. The logo, to represent the project, was also chosen, the winner was the one presented by the Spanish Centre. In addition, this meeting was also a point of encounter and knowledge among all partners and we could share teaching experiences. Besides we visited the LSS France PREEREN Center and part of the recent history of Trieste, Ljubliana and we could make a very interesting visit to Venice. Our Italian colleagues were great hosts. 7. Noteworthy days. Celebration of activities to commemorate the International Day of Childrens Rights and the International Day Against Gender Violence.

The previous week to the Childrens Rights Celebration, the students of the first and the second year of the secondary education decorated the school with birds drawn in different colours and techniques. The human right chosen by every child was written in each drawing, as well as his or her name. Once the birds were all collected, they were hung up at the hall of the high school in order to give an atmosphere of celebration. Three childrens rights have been chosen to be worked with students of first and second year of the secondary education, these rights are: Education, Play and Health. On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day Against Gender Violence, the I.E.S. Mediterranean (Secondary School) has developed a series of activities at the Centre and in the area and neighborhood of San Anton, close to the school. At the school the activities have helped to make the students aware of the different aspects related to gender equality and the rejection of any form of violence against women. In addition, these activities served to advertise the event organized in the neighbourhood of San Anton. 8. Human rights and Spanish Constitution activities. The English and French Department of IES Mediterraneo have carried out an activity to commemorate the Declaration of Human Rights and the Spanish Constitution drawing on both dates to coincide in time because one is held on December 10th and the other on the 6th November. The activity consisted of the creation of posters and comics on the above-mentioned documents: the Declaration of human rights and the Spanish Constitution. A gymkhana, which was designed by the 2nd Bachillerato students, was offered to all the students of the Institute but it was finally carried out by 10 selected groups of 4 students each. It was held with the students of 2nd Bachelor of English and French at first but then all the students of the Institute participated. 9. The Religion Class of IES Mediterraneo with Lorca (Murcia) After the impact in our society caused by the Lorca earthquake, numerous initiatives appeared. In Lorca 15th November 2011, ten months after the tremble, our high school IES Mediterraneo felt the need of offering help and support to the teaching delegation of the Diocese of Cartagena through the accomplishment of some activities in Lorca. 10. E-twinning project. The e-twinning project is part of the Comenius and it is a platform for teachers to discuss, share and work together on specific topics, in this case our interest for solidarity, as well as allow students to develop their skills in European collaboration using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This project has been registered and founded on 15.12.2011 by Carmen Torres from IES Mediterrneo, Cartagena (Spain). We have the intention of promoting chats among the students of the different countries by using the chat tool that this project offers us. Second term: January to March 2012 11. Noteworthy days.

On January 30th, we celebrated the School Day of Peace and Non Violence, conducting a series of activities for the students to develop values, attitudes and a respectful, caring and responsible behavior aimed to promote coexistence in the school and in their daily lives. With the following objectives: recognizing peace as one of the highest values we have as human beings and that affects all dimensions of life; knowing the word PEACE as a community of justice and nonviolence; promoting values of solidarity, tolerance and integration of differences; renouncing violence as a means of resolving conflicts; and encouraging dialogue and respecting all the rules for good living. On 8th March, we work on the International Day of Working Women, and we wanted to do an activity through which students became aware of the inequalities that still exist around us. The current situation presents that equality in the law is inconsistent with equality in real life. To detect this difference, we use the metaphor to wear purple glasses and rule of inversion (in a situation to be analyzed, we change the gender of the protagonist- if it is male, we try to see him as a women and vice versa- and if something seems strange, it is because there is a gender difference). 12. Second project meeting, in Duchcov (Czech Republic), from 5th to 9th March 2012. The second project meeting was held in Duchcov, Czech Republic, and the visit included the working sessions (showing of the activities which were already done and goals which were already achieved plus the programming of the next activities) and some visits. We visited the city of Duchcov and Prague, and Duchcovs surrounding area, which turned successfully and ecologically ex coal mines into green areas. The meeting was attended by all schools, and also some students were present. 13. Poster competition. The poster competition for the Solidarity Concert was desert, thats why the Plastic Arts teacher from Spain, Salvador Martinez, designed the concert poster. 14. Students chat on e-twinning. On April 23rd we had a chat meeting with some of our project partners. Directed by Jose Angel Moreno and Carmen Torres, our students were chatting for 1 hour with their partners from Italy and Czech Republic. They were telling each other how a day is in their schools (schedules, subjects, timetables, activities, etc). It was an interesting experience and we should repeat it before our meetings in Sweden and Germany, because some of our students will travel to these countries. 15. Daily routines; One day in my school. Led by the English teacher, Carmen Torres, pupils produce collages and presentations with pictures and thoughts ( glogs) about their daily routines, as well as aspects of the city and the centre, in order to inform students of the rest of the partner schools. 16. Dissemination of information about the sponsored children. Talks among students from different courses to inform them of the Spanish project Solidarity Forever, and the sponsorship of children work were carried out in collaboration with the NGO Action Aid.

17. Lectures and talks by NGO members. We received the visit of three NGOs: Firefighters in Action, Doctors Without Borders and Manos Unidas. Two members of the Firefighters In Action talked students about the activities they carry out in different places of the world. This activity had as a main objective that the students become sensitive about the work of NGO, and the possibility of collaborating with them in an altruist way. The NGO Doctors Without Borders, using their Solidarity Initiatives Program, whose purpose is to disclose their ethical principles, set out the actions undertaken and denounce the issues detected by their professionals. Our students have collaborated with Manos Unidas in two activities: Talk - Symposium with a missionary stationed in Africa and The Campaign of Solidarity Sailing. Third term: April to June 2012 18. Solidarity race. The solidarity race is twofold. First of all, it develops a critical spirit in our young people against injustices that occur in the world with regard to the rights of children. On the other hand, it gets money to improve the lives of children without access to primary health care, education and in a mire of extreme poverty. This activity has been led by Gisela Cantero, PE teacher at IES Mediterrneo. 19. Intercultural day. IES Mediterrneo has collaborated with the program "A school open to other cultures" contributing their bit to intercultural education. The Intercultural day was organized this year on 21st May, taking advantage of the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Several workshops were held during this day in our classrooms: development of key rings, tattoos, henna, solidarity bookmarks, etc. 20. Making and selling promotional products of Solidarity Concert. The students have sold tickets and commemorative t-shirts for Solidarity Concert 2012, with the goal of raising funds to keep the sponsorship of 11 children with the NGOs Action Aid. 21. Dissemination of the project. Our project has been disseminated through various media, as well as the main educational websites of the region of Murcia.

22. Voluntary work of students from IES Mediterraneo. The voluntary work by students and teachers of "IES Mediterraneo" at the "Virgen del Mar residence" for the elderly grows out of our long term project "Solidarity Forever" and the "Comenius BIH Project." The residence belonging to the "Edad dorada" association and "Mensajeros de la paz", is situated in Barrio San Antn, in Cartagena. We see this experience as an opportunity to enhance education and the fundamental values necessary for the personal and social development of our students, values such as solidarity, generosity, patience and tolerance which we try to instil in them day by day. In this way they have the chance to dedicate small parts of their free time to the elderly, who are in need of affection and attention, sharing their happiness and youth. It is a way of getting involved in the local community, which we believe will be very positive for both sides. This activity has been created and carried out by English Teacher, Paloma PerezCrespo, and we decided to include it in the calendar for the year 2012 / 2013. 23. Solidarity Concert 2012. Every year our school, IES Mediterraneo, in Cartagena, holds a Solidarity Concert in aid of various charitable causes. We have two objectives, firstly, to raise funds for "Aid in Action", an NGO we have been supporting for years, and secondly, to raise awareness among our students, school staff, and the local community of various social and world problems. In previous years we have concentrated on the themes of world peace, hunger and poverty, old age, racism, exclusion, at-risk children, violence, care for the environment, etc. The theme this year was about living with difference. The slogan, printed on hundreds of tshirts, was All Different but the same. The Concert took place on Friday, 4th May, 2012, at the Cartagena Conservatory of Music.
