The order the vessel is built

PV Elite Tips and trick how to Some of little things you might not know

The order the vessel is built

Overview:
Set the nozzles to be computed to the MAWP (Ill show you how to do this) Built for internal pressure only (no vacuum) only the shell and heads Check all the thickness are adequate Install the operating liquid Now set the external (vacuum) pressure Install vacuum rings or thicken components Install any nozzles

Now to see this strategy in action

Start with Design Constraints

Fill in everything except the external pressure

Build the vessel to completion

Check all the thickness are Ok

Now enter the operating liquid

Enter the External pressure back the Design Constraints screen

The external pressure here

Now add vacuum rings or thicken

Here is the maximum distance between the rings

Or we could make the shell thicker we have a choice

7

Now add the nozzles

We have now completed the vessel

But, we now look closer at the nozzle calculation

The vessel has an MAWP - here

Design pressure 100 psi

MAWP 326.677 psi

What about the nozzle pressure ?

9

This is the nozzle calculation

Design pressure 100 psi

Vessel MAWP is 326 psi

The Nozzle could limit the MAWP of the vessel if it cannot take that pressure
10

Let us look at the Load Cases tab

This is the problem nozzle pressure based on Design Pressure
However there are four choices for the nozzle design pressure We can examine each choice in turn

11

Nozzle Design Pressure Options

Liquid level

Vessel MAWP is not computed for the nozzle MAWP is here

If we use the vessel MAWP for the nozzle, then the nozzle will not control the MAWP of the overall vessel

12

Can move the nozzle physically

Click this button

15

The List Dialog is very useful with nozzle problems

The list dialog allows you to do a lot of things to modify a vessel, especially with nozzle problems

16

The List Dialog is very useful with nozzle problems

Suppose you have install many nozzles in an Elliptical head like this
But, this should have been a Torispherical head You change the head to Torispherical, however, this is what happens All those nozzle have disappeared !

17

The List Dialog is very useful with nozzle problems

All those nozzle have disappeared !

18

The List Dialog is very useful with nozzle problems

This List Dialog comes to your rescue if you knew about before changing the head
In the List Dialog screen select all the nozzle and press <Ctl>+C to save them

21

The List Dialog is very useful with nozzle problems

Open the List Dialog again, and add a new row

Put your mouse cursor here, and press <Ctl>+V and your nozzle are retuned

22

The List Dialog is very useful with can be used to add nozzles nozzle problems
Here are the restored nozzles

23

The List Dialog can be used to add nozzles

Suppose you wanted to copy a nozzle from one location to another
Use the List Dialog again to accomplish this Add a row to make room for the new nozzle
From here

Select the first row (click on tab 1)

Press <Ctl>+C to copy it

To here

24

The List Dialog can be used to add nozzles

Put cursor in row 2. Now press <Ctl>+v to add the new nozzle in row 2
A new nozzle is added, but with identical information. Change the name and any other details.
From here

Here is the nozzle you copied.

To here

25

The List Dialog can be used for other things as well

You can:
Copy, change and delete vacuum rings Copy change and delete platforms Move any item that is attached to the vessel Copy whole bunches of stuff at once

There is one more thing we have to look at before we leave List Dialog

26

Changing from Imperial to Metric nozzle problems

All the dimensions are in mm except the nozzle diameter
The diameter should be in mm, not inches

We enlist the services of the List Dialog again to put matters straight

27

Now consider the effects of wind

It is important how we build a vertical tower
This is the wind speed profile. Altitude versus Wind Speed

These are the forces from the wind

Altitude Wind speed

28

Or like this

Like this

Now consider the effects of wind

The vessel on the right would need a thick shell the whole length
The vessel on the left would need a thick shell at the bottom, and a thin shell at the top. This is a more economical design

Like this

Put PV Elite on automatic drive

PV Elite can automatically check the vessel for code required components
We find this using the Design Constraints tab For example, use this little button

However, use these functions only if you know what you are doing
Your vessel can go where you do not want it to go !

30

The value of the Status Line

Effective length for external pressure

Maximum external pressure Element 2 of 3 elements From and to the Datum Line Component facing Up or Down

Whenever you see anything in red, you have a failure Watch the status line all the time it can save you hours of work

32

Getting a quick sketch of the vessel

This in sketch you can Clickis athe 2D screen send to the printer
Click File on the menu line, choose Print Preview

Click on Print Preview

33

Getting a quick sketch of the vessel

This is a sketch you can send to the printer

34

You can send a 3D image to anyone

You can find it in Windows not have Even if that someone does Explorer PV Elite it goes to a web browser
Right click on the 3D screen then click on Save 3D Model as HTML This message tells you where it is stored and the name

35

You can send a 3D image to anyone

You can find it in Windows Explorer
Send these three files to anyone

When they double click on xxxx.html (your file name) they will be invited to download and install this application:

36

They will then get this image in their browser which can be orbited

37

Installing a nozzle on a nozzle

Now install the daughter nozzle First parent nozzle N1

Click Add New Nozzle

38

Installing a nozzle on a nozzle

Now install the daughter nozzle

Nozzle size Click nozzle on nozzle box

Select the parent nozzle

Set all the other data look at your model

39

Installing a sump or boot

Install this nozzle in the normal way

Now, just add a head to your model

Look near the bottom of your input screen

Click this box as we want a sump head Select the nozzle to attach the sump head

If your head is inverted, click the Flip icon

40

Changing the vessel globally

Suppose wanted to change the material for every component

First, select the first element whose characteristic you need to change
On the selected element change something (eg Material) Click on the share icon

This is the share screen Click the characteristic

The data is copied from-to
click on the appropriate element

41

Changing the vessel globally nozzles too

The nozzle data can also be changed globally
Click this button This screen appears

You can select material and other nozzle details

And exclude nozzles from change
42

We can visually see if nozzles interfere

In the 3D screen, press the right mouse button to get this drop down menu
Click visibility This screen appears

Click Diameter Limits

Now you can see the diameter limits

43

Suppose you wanted to find a nozzle on a complicated vessel

This vessel has 84 nozzle, we need to find one of them
Click on this icon (bottom right corner of input screen)

This screen appears

Click on the nozzle you wish to see

Click Highlight Nozzle.

45

Nozzle orientation
Where is the zero point, and do we go clockwise or counter clockwise ?

Is it like this ?

Or is it like this ?

PV Elite allows you to choose the Datum and Direction

Note: The skirt is now a cylinder and the base ring is gone

You can flip vertical again, but the bottom must be turned back into a skirt
51

Making the 3D model transparent

Click on the Transparency Icon here
Your model is now transparent

52

We can also section the model

Click on the Insert Cutting plane icon
We now see the model insides exposed by the cutting plane This is useful to check any alignment

53

The U-1 Form

Pressure vessels are registered by the Nation Board on Inspectors

This is done by submitting a standard form the U-1 form

This is how get PV Elite to fill in most of the information Run the output processor (get the calculations) On tool bar press this icon Now you see the blank form

54

Code Case 2695

In 2012, ASME issued a new exciting code case, which allows ASME Section VIII, Division 1 vessels to be analysed in accordance with Division 2 The only proviso is that Division 1 stress values be used What are the advantages:
Heads can be thinner Nozzle re-pads can be smaller Vacuum conditions may produce thinner shells Saving in welding consumables Lighter manipulating and transport weights
