A brief guide to terms used in this booklet Parents /carers This term refers to all legal guardians. Children and Young Peoples Service (CYPS) The Children and Young Peoples Service brings together all services for children under one banner. Local Authority (LA) The borough / local council. Community schools Community schools have their running costs met from public funds which come through the local council (mainly council tax and grants from central government). They provide free education. Community schools are often referred to as state schools. Foundation schools Foundation schools were previously grant-maintained schools. The School Standards and Framework Act 1998 has brought these schools into a new framework which means that their running costs are now met from public funds which come through the local council. They provide free education. Each foundation school has its own admissions policy. Voluntary-aided schools Voluntary-aided schools are set up by voluntary bodies, usually churches, but have their running costs met from public funds which come through the local council. They provide free education. The voluntary-aided schools in Lambeth have very close links to their church, and are often referred to as church schools. Each voluntary-aided school has its own admissions policy. Special schools Special schools cater for children that have a statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and whose special needs are such that they cannot be met in a mainstream school. All children attending a special school must have a statement of special educational needs. Ofsted The national Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), is the government department responsible for inspecting schools and reporting on standards of achievement and the quality of education provided. Reception class The first class of an infant or primary school, taking children at or before the age of five years. Department for Education (DfE) was formed on 12 May 2010 and is responsible for education and children's services. (The department was previously known as the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF))

Introduction

Starting primary school is an exciting time for both your child and you as a parent or carer. It can also be very daunting, especially for those who are going through the process for the first time. It is a huge milestone in every childs life and it is important that you have the right information to make a decision about which primary school you would prefer your child to attend. This booklet gives you information on Lambeths primary schools and explains all you need to do to apply. All of our primary schools are committed to providing a high quality of education and excellent opportunities for our children. Most primary schools in Lambeth are rated good or outstanding, and those that are rated as satisfactory are improving rapidly. We have excellent headteachers and school staff who will do their best to ensure your child makes good progress and enjoys their time at school. There is a significant increase in demand for Reception class places in Lambeth and across Greater London in recent years. The council has been working hard with schools to meet the expected demand for places in September 2010. We have added extra classes to accommodate more children to ensure that all children who apply to attend a Lambeth primary school are offered a place in a local school. The future will see more reception classes in Lambeth primary schools,

All London boroughs are now using a new co-ordinated system for allocating primary school places. This means that you can use the Common Application Form for the borough where you live to apply for up to six primary (including infant) schools in any borough (except fee-paying schools). It is anticipated that this will help to ensure that more children get an earlier offer of one of their preferred school choices, and leave fewer with no offer at all. Please read this booklet carefully along with those provided by individual schools and neighbouring boroughs. This will give you more detailed information about the schools, their ethos and individual achievements, all of which will help you make your choices. It may also be a good idea to visit your local schools and speak to the headteachers and their staff this is another way of finding out about them and what they can offer your child.

Introduction

This booklet guides parents/carers and their children through the admissions process for a reception place at primary school for the 2011/12 academic year. It contains guidelines on how to apply, a description of each Lambeth primary school and their admissions criteria. Please read carefully the admissions criteria for the schools you are interested in. You should contact individual schools directly for specific information and request a copy of the schools own prospectus. Before making your application, try to attend open days/evenings to speak to staff and form your own opinion of the schools suitability for your child. The Lambeth co-ordinated

admissions procedure means that if you live in Lambeth, you must apply for school places via Lambeth Council, regardless as to whether you are applying to Lambeth schools or not, using one single form. If you live in another local authority (LA) area, you must apply through that LA. You can apply online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/eadmissions or by completing a paper Common Application Form. Whichever method you choose, your application must be received by Saturday 15 January 2011. The council is holding several information meetings for parents/carers, which you are encouraged to attend. Details are set out on page 10.

Admission into the reception year is an important time so please read this section carefully. It will provide the information that parents/carers need to make considered judgements about which schools will provide the most appropriate academic and social environment their child will need to make a successful start to their school career. If you are unsure about any aspect of the admissions procedure please contact Lambeth School Admissions Team on 020 7926 9503 and/or attend one of the primary school admissions meetings organised to provide information and support. Please see page 2 for a guide to terms used in this booklet. In accordance with new legislation, all London boroughs, along with several ones bordering London, are implementing a new Pan-London Primary School Admissions Procedure, similar to the current system used for applying for secondary school places. It is anticipated that this new coordinated procedure will help to ensure that more children get an offer of one of their preferred schools earlier, and fewer with no offer at all. Legislation and purpose The Education Act 2002 and the School Admissions Code 2010 provides a framework that

seeks to ensure that on National Offer Day as many children as possible whose parents/carers have applied for a school place on time receives an offer (if an offer can be made) at a school for which they have expressed a preference. The procedure is not however able to guarantee that every child who has submitted an on time application will receive an offer of a school place at a preferred school. Deciding which schools to apply for It is important to consider as much information as possible about the schools you wish to apply to. Check whether your child is likely to be offered a place based on the schools published admissions criteria, which can be found on the individual school pages in this booklet, and check whether the curriculum, ethos and aims of the school will suit your childs needs and abilities. You can find out information about schools by doing the following: Reading this booklet carefully and looking at the admissions criteria for each school Contacting the school directly for a copy of their prospectus if they produce one Going to the schools open days or evenings. Details of open days are listed on the schools pages in this booklet or available directly from the school Talking to your childs pre-school provider Reading the latest Ofsted report for the schools you are interested in. These are available for viewing or downloading from www.ofsted.gov.uk If the school you want is in a different borough, contact that borough for their booklet (details on page 24). However, you must still apply through Lambeth Council, if you are a Lambeth resident Completing an online or paper Common Application Form You must complete the Common Application Form (CAF) for your home borough regardless of whether you are applying for schools in or outside of that borough. Please check that your childs address is in Lambeth borough before completing the Lambeth Common Application Form (CAF) Lambeth residents must complete the Lambeth CAF, online or paper, 5

to apply to all schools either in Lambeth or outside of the borough with the exception of private (fee-paying) schools Residents of boroughs other than Lambeth who wish to apply for a Lambeth school must complete the CAF provided by the home borough in which they live. The details of your application will then be passed on to Lambeth Council by your home borough You can apply online from our website: www.lambeth.gov.uk/ eadmissions (see page 12 for further details) or you can complete a paper CAF, which is in the centre of this booklet or can be downloaded from our website In addition to the CAF some schools require a supplementary information form to be completed. This can be obtained from the school. Please check the admissions arrangements for each school you are applying for to see if such a form is required. An application may not be considered if you have not submitted a supplementary information form when a school requires it. All supplementary information forms should be returned to the school concerned by 14 January 2011 and not to the council. Applications received by Saturday 15 January 2011 will be accepted as on time. However, if your application is received by Friday 14 January 2011, we can ensure that it is checked, 6 Section 1: Process and procedure

and acknowledged before the closing date Parents/carers are able to list up to six schools on the CAF It is very important that you select the schools on the CAF in the order that you prefer them. If more than one school is able to offer your child a place we will look at your list of preferences and make an offer for the school that is placed highest The admissions authority will consider your application individually against the schools admissions criteria. The schools will not know your preferences We recommend that you apply for no less than four schools including one school closest to your home as this could increase your chances of an offer. Remember, schools will allocate places according to their admissions criteria and are not obliged to offer a place because you have limited your preferences If you think that your child has an exceptional need and you would like this need considered as part of your application you must state this in the relevant section of the CAF. You must provide professionally supported evidence with your application. Online applicants should post supporting evidence to Lambeth School Admissions Team. If you do not provide any professional supporting evidence of your childs needs the admissions authority

will be unable to consider your application on these grounds. The code states that If using medical/social criterion, admission authorities... must not give higher priority to children under this criterion if the required documents have not been produced If your child has a statement of Special Educational Needs, do not complete a CAF, please see page 21 for further information. If you are not a Lambeth resident please contact your home borough for advice. Online applications You will be able to apply online from 1 September 2010 (see page 12 for further details). We recommend applying online as this avoids any potential problems with the post. In addition to your notification letter you will also be able to find out the result of your application online on 4 April 2011, therefore you will not have to rely on waiting for your letter to arrive in the post. Also, with electronic applications you have an advantage of being able to amend your preferences at any time up until the closing date. The closing date All Common Application Forms (CAF) whether online or paper, should be returned by the closing date of: Saturday 15 January 2011. However, we are encouraging applicants to hand in their application no later than 14 January 2011. Any CAFs received after

15 January 2011 will be late and will not be processed until after 4 April 2011, when offers have been generated for on time applications. Notification of outcome All offers of school places are made all over the country on the same day, National Offer Day, which will be 4 April 2011. Lambeth Council will send a letter to Lambeth residents informing them of the outcome of their application by first class post on that day. In addition to this, online applicants will also be able to view the result of their application online from 4 April 2011. Also, an email with the result of the application will be sent later that day.

What to do if you are offered a place at a school You must respond to an offer of a place by returning the reply slip included with your offer letter by 18 April 2011 to the admissions team based in the council area you live in. In addition, some schools may also send their own offers to parents/carers after 4 April 2011, responses to those letters should be made according to the schools directions. What to do if you are not offered a place at a school In line with statutory requirements, Lambeth Council will look to allocate places in Lambeth schools that have vacancies for those Lambeth parents/carers whose children did not receive an offer from one of their preferred schools by 4 April 2011. 7

These allocations will be made on the basis of distance, ie, the nearest school to the childs home address that identifies a vacancy. Please note that allocations will be made according to the number of vacancies there are in the borough. An allocation will be made to a school that parents/carers did not originally apply for. In the event that you do not receive an offer of a place at one of the schools you selected on your CAF, Lambeth School Admissions Team will provide you with additional information regarding waiting lists, appeals and other information that could help resolve the issue. We will also be able to provide you with information about schools that have vacancies after 25 April 2011. You will then have the opportunity to apply for additional schools by completing a new CAF.

Waiting lists Your childs name will automatically be placed on the waiting list for any Lambeth community schools you may have applied to as a higher preference to that offered. If your child does not receive an offer at all, their name will also be included on the waiting list for any Lambeth community or voluntary-controlled school you may have applied to. If you have applied to voluntary-aided or foundation schools or those in another borough and you wish to remain on their waiting list, you will need to contact that school or borough directly. The contact details for our neighbouring boroughs are on page 24. 3.19 of the School Admissions Code states that Waiting lists must be clear, fair and objective and must not give priority to children based on the date either their application was received or their name was added to the list. For example, if a child moves to an area outside the normal admissions round and has higher priority against the published oversubscription criteria, they must be ranked above those with lower priority. Parents/carers need to be aware that if their childs name is on a schools waiting list, their name may go up or down depending on how the admissions criteria applies to others on the waiting list. Late applications Applications received after the closing date will be considered after National Offer Day, 4 April 2011. Parents/carers of late applicants will

be notified as soon as an offer can be made from an admissions authority. If there are, however, vacancies in any school, Lambeth residents can be allocated that place once they have come to the attention of Lambeth Council. Late medical/social (MEDSOC) applications If parents/carers submit an on time application and is not offered a place at a preferred school and then submit late MEDSOC information after 18 February 2011, their application on these grounds cannot be considered as on time. This will result in a second application being generated after 4 April 2011, which will be treated as a late application. As the admissions authority for our community and voluntary-controlled schools, Lambeth Council will be unable to apply the MEDSOC criterion application without the relevant paperwork. If that paperwork is submitted late, then the application will be considered late also. If the MEDSOC panel agrees to prioritise late applications on medical/social grounds and the school is already full, then the childs position on the waiting list will change accordingly. How to appeal against the refusal of a place Under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, you have the right to appeal against the refusal of a school place. If you wish to appeal against the decision not to offer your

child a place at a Lambeth community or voluntary controlled school (see inside cover for definition), please contact the Clerk to the Independent Appeals Panel, Democratic Services, Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, SW2 1RW, Tel: 020 7926 2170, Email: democracy@lambeth.gov.uk. A guidance note on appeals and an appeal form can also be downloaded from the councils website via the following link: www.lambeth.gov.uk/eadmissions Please note that Democratic Services can only accept appeals for the Lambeth community primary schools, please see pages 16-18. If your application for a school place was submitted on time, the closing date for receipt of appeals for any of the schools listed above is Friday 6 May 2011. For late applications, the closing date is 10 school days after you receive written notification of the outcome of your application. Any appeals received after these deadlines are unlikely to be considered unless applicants are able to demonstrate extenuating circumstances which prevented the appeal from being submitted on time. Democratic Services will write to you regarding the arrangements for considering your appeal. Your appeal will be heard by an Independent Appeals Panel made up of panelists with knowledge of education issues. You will be invited to attend the appeal hearing and make representations in person to the

Independent Appeals Panel. If you wish to appeal against nonadmission to any other primary school, you will need to contact the individual school(s) directly, to obtain information about how to appeal. Outcome of appeals For Lambeth community and voluntary-controlled schools, you will be informed in writing about the outcome by the Democratic Services Team. For other Lambeth schools, the clerk for that appeal panel will write to you. Moving address School Admissions Team will consider your application using the details you provide on your form. If you move address you must inform the Admissions Team of your new address so we are able to contact you if we need further information or to communicate the outcome of your application. If you change your address after 18 February 2011 and this means that you need to change your preferences you will need to contact your new council to find out what to do next.

If your child is entering reception class in primary school in the academic year 2011/12 and was born between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007, you need to apply for a Lambeth primary school place for them. Paper common application forms are still available but many parents/carers may find it easier to apply online using the eAdmissions system. Checklist for using a Lambeth online or paper Common Application Form (CAF)

When applying for a primary school place please ensure that you have:
Researched thoroughly each school you are interested in. You can do this by reading the prospectus available from the school or information in this booklet. If it is not a Lambeth school you will need to obtain information from the school or the schools borough Checked that your childs address is within Lambeth borough Checked that your child meets the admissions criteria for the schools you are considering Completed all relevant sections of the online or paper CAF. Failure to complete the CAF in full may hinder its processing Enclosed any supporting evidence (eg. a letter from the family doctor/ consultant in support of any medical/social claim). For online applications you will need to send this directly to the Lambeth School Admissions Team with your childs name, date of birth and the online CAF reference number Used the correct postage, when sending any paper CAFs to the Lambeth School Admissions Team Included a stamped addressed envelope when submitting a paper CAF. Please note that for paper CAFs we will only send a receipt as proof that this form has been received if a stamped addressed envelope is attached. Frequently asked questions

When does my child need to start primary school? The law states that every child needs to start receiving education at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. In Lambeth, children can usually start primary school at about four and a half. Exactly when your child will start will depend on their date of birth and whether the school they have a place at has one or more intakes. The number of intakes that a school has is indicated in the individual school information starting on page 16. Children will usually start school in September 2011.

My child attends the nursery class of a Lambeth primary school. Do I have to apply for a place in the main school or will my child be transferred automatically? Children who attend a nursery class in a primary school do not transfer automatically to the main school. You have to apply separately to the schools borough for a reception class place. However, you may need also to submit a supplementary information form to the school. Please check admission criteria for details. If I apply for a reception place, will my child be offered a place because they are in the nursery? There are different admissions criteria for places in reception classes than those for nursery places. Please read pages 25 to 63 for the admission criteria for Lambeth schools. No children attending a community school nursery or childrens centre will get priority for a reception place at that school. However, some voluntary-aided or foundation schools may do this. You should check the admissions criteria of the individual schools for further details. Most schools do not give priority to children already attending their nursery so children who attend different early years provision or no provision at all have an equal chance of applying for a place at the school. applications getting greater priority as they may meet the schools admissions criteria more than a child who was attending the nursery (eg they could live nearer to the school). But my child is receiving support and has friends in the nursery; can this be taken in to account? Unfortunately not all schools will take this into account. Again, you need to check the schools admissions criteria to find out if priority is given to nursery children. This is not the case for Lambeth community schools. It is important to note that all staff at Lambeth schools are trained to support all new children that start attending the main school and will ensure they settle in quickly, whether they were in the schools nursery/childrens centre or not. What happens if I change my address after my child has been offered a place? A legitimate change of address, after your child has been offered a place, will not affect the offer of a place. You will be expected to provide evidence of your address at the time you made your application as well as your new address. If you are unable to provide satisfactory evidence that you were living at the address included on the Common Application Form the offer of a place may be withdrawn. Proof of address(es) will be required by the council and/or the schools when your child is admitted. You must inform Lambeth School Admissions Team of

changes of address as this may affect your application (please see page 9 for further details). I am due to move soon. Can I reserve a place at a primary school in my new neighbourhood? No. Primary school places cannot be reserved. You can still apply to your school of choice and your application will be considered on the basis of your home address at the time of application. What can I do to prepare my child for school? Starting school should be a big adventure! Theres a great deal that you can do to make sure that your son or daughter is happy and confident from the start of his or her school career. Before your child starts school, talk to the headteacher and find out how the school settles in new children. Check what you can do to help. The first few days at school can be daunting. If there are other children in your area going to the same school, try to make contact with their parents/carers so that your children can get to know each other. If this is possible, your child will have some familiar friendly faces around as soon as term begins.

Children will become increasingly independent if parents/carers get them used to collecting, hanging up and putting on their coat and other outdoor clothing. Help your child to take off and put on his or her own shoes. Shoes with velcro are easier for younger children than styles with laces or buckles. Asking permission to go to the toilet can be unfamiliar and unsettling if children have been used to taking responsibility for this themselves. Boys may not know how to use a urinal on their own. Check what the school expects children to do and try to familiarise your child with the routine before he or she starts school. Mealtimes at school should be fun. Find out what arrangements the school makes for lunch, and prepare your child by encouraging him or her to use a knife and fork properly, to try new foods a little at a time, and to eat a balanced meal as far as possible. Children need to know that they should contact an adult immediately if they feel unhappy or have hurt themselves in the playground. The adult concerned will pass this information on to the class teacher who will reassure the child and take further action as necessary.

Schools are keen to work closely with parents/carers, and you can do a lot to build on what your child has been learning during the school day. For example, if the school has a scheme to send reading books home, you can help your child by reading with him or her in the evening.

How decisions are made in Lambeth Lambeth Council, namely the CYPS, is the admissions authority for all community primary schools will, in consultation, determine the admissions arrangements for its schools. Lambeth Council, as the admission authority for all Lambeth community primary schools, will comply, wherever possible, with parents/carers wishes where they have expressed a preference for a particular school. Nevertheless, if there are more applications than places available, the CYPS will give priority to children in the following order: 1 Looked After Children A child in public care (looked after child) means a person under the age of 18 years who is provided by social services with accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (Section 20 of the Children Act 1989) or who is the subject of a care order under Part IV of the Act. Children who are looked after under an agreed series of short-term placements (such as respite) are excluded. All applications under this criterion must be supported by a letter from the relevant Local Authority 2 Siblings Children with a brother or sister who already attends the school, and who will not have left the school at the time of admission. As a result siblings in the nursery or year 6 of a

primary school, or year 11 at a secondary school will not be regarded as a sibling under this criterion. A sibling is defined as a full/half/step brother or sister (who are living at the same address in all instances) or a child who is living as part of the family by reason of a court order, or a child who has been placed with foster carers at that address as a result of being looked after by the Local Authority. However, children who are looked after under an agreed series of short-term placements (such as respite) will not be regarded as siblings under this criterion. 3 Children with Exceptional Medical or Social Needs Children with a professionally supported medical or social need, whose application identifies a particular school that is especially able to meet that need. The decision to prioritise children on these grounds will be determined via Lambeth CYPS MEDSOC Panel, which is comprised of CYPS senior management as well as senior school staff. Documents from an appropriate professional (not including general information from a website, etc) must support these applications. However, any supporting evidence does not automatically mean that applicants will gain priority as the decision to prioritise under this criterion will solely rest with the MEDSOC Panel.

4 Distance Priority will be given on the basis of distance between the childs home and the school, measured by a straight-line. This measurement will be done using the SIA Datamap computerised mapping system. This measurement will be from a point from the childs home as identified by the software to a central point in the schools grounds as profiled in the software. The childs home address will be the childs permanent place of residency and must not be a business address, or the address of a relative or carer, unless they have legal custody of the child. Applications must only be made from a single address. Applications or offers under this criteria will only be valid once proof of address has been given and confirmed. As a tiebreaker for all criteria, priority will be given to children living closest to the preferred school ~ (measured by a straight-line) in accordance with the measuring information in criterion 4. However, ONLY in the case where children have exactly the same distance between their home and the school, Lambeth LA will randomly allocate places as a tiebreaker.
Children who attend a Lambeth community nursery school class will not automatically transfer to the main school. Parents/carers must apply separately for the primary school through Lambeth CYPS.

Over-subscription criteria for Henry Cavendish Primary School (Balham and Streatham Sites) Lambeth LA (namely the CYPS) is the admissions authority for Henry Cavendish Primary school (Balham and Streatham sites), a single community primary school. The admissions criteria for this school are as follows: Lambeth LA, as the admissions authority for Henry Cavendish Primary school, will comply, wherever possible, with parents wishes where they have expressed a preference for this school. Christ Church (Brixton) Church of England Primary School Foundation places The governing body has designated 10 places to be offered to pupils whose parents/carers are faithful and regular worshippers in an Anglican or other Christian church (see note a).

If there are less than 10 qualified applicants for foundation places, any unfilled places will become additional open places. Unsuccessful qualified applicants for foundation places will be considered for any open places remaining unfilled at the end of the allocation procedure. Open places The governing body has designated 20 places each year as open places, to be offered to pupils who do not qualify for a foundation place, but whose parents have chosen the school for the type of education it provides.

Professional Training Days (INSET) From the 194 pupil days set out above, headteachers will need to designate, in consultation with staff, five non-teaching staff development days (INSET), which may be allocated as whole day training sessions during pupil holiday periods or by the use of additional hours before or after school sessions. Our view is that the allocation of dates should be left to headteachers. However our strong recommendation is that at least one whole day should be allocated for staff development prior to the beginning of Term One. It would be for headteachers to determine, in consultation with their staff, whether it would be appropriate for one or more days to be allocated more flexibly as twilight sessions.

Travel assistance All children aged 5-11 years old can travel free on buses and trams with a valid oyster card. However, you can apply to the council for financial help with your childs travel costs if your child meets the following criteria: Parents/carers must live in Lambeth The child must attend the most appropriate school to home i.e: 1 The nearest community, foundation, voluntary-controlled or voluntary aided school to home, regardless of where the school is mixed or single-sex 2 The nearest denominational school to home where mixed or single-sex The child must be travelling a distance of over two miles for a child aged 5 11, that cannot be undertaken by bus (as confirmed Transport for London) or there are professionally supported medical reasons why the child cannot undertake the journey by bus. If the distance to your childs school is more than the distance mentioned above, we will only give your child a pass if this school is the nearest school to your home with a place for your child. If there are schools nearer to your home with spare places, we will not give your child a pass. We will check this with Lambeth School Admissions Team or directly with the school. You must send proof if you could not get your child into the nearer schools.

Please note that any parents/carers who have applied to a school further than the nearest school will not be offered assistance with travel unless the nearest school was not able to offer a school place. As required by law, the distance between home and school is measured by a straight-line. An appropriate school place will normally mean the nearest community, voluntary-aided or foundation school. The council will take into consideration your preference for a particular school on denominational grounds, but it must be the nearest denominational school to your home, and you must provide documentary proof of regular church attendance. Pupils who qualify for help with travel costs will be given a travel pass. Travel passes will be issued only on special medical grounds or if Transport for London does not provide a bus pass for that particular journey. School meals Lambeth Council is committed to providing a high-quality school meals service which offers varied and nutritious meals and meets strict standards of health, safety and hygiene. The service caters for a wide variety of cultural, religious and medical dietary needs. School meals are available every day during term time at a standard charge. Sustainable modes of travel strategy summary School travel represents a significant element of single journey car use at peak times, with the corresponding impacts on congestion and pollution. If children become accustomed to travelling by car, habits learned in younger years are carried into adulthood with ensuing long term negative impacts. Schools, parents and young peoples decisions to support sustainable travel choices therefore will all play a part towards reducing the negative impacts of school travel. Given the recent changes in education policy, where new schools are opening in the borough and schools are open for longer, the transport related impacts will increase. By promoting active, sustainable choices for the school journey, there is scope to reduce the negative effects of car use. 66 Section 4: Other information

Improvements can be made to safety, environmental and health outcomes. The Education and Inspections Act (2006) has incorporated a duty to assess the travel needs of young people up the age of 19 (up to the age of 25 for those with disabilities). The Act outlines that local authorities must provide travel arrangements for children, clarifying those that are eligible for free or subsidised travel. An assessment of the existing provision for travelling sustainably will be undertaken in order to ensure that walking, cycling and the use of public transport remains a realistic, attractive option for journeys during school time.

Attendance and punctuality Lambeth schools promote high standards of attendance and punctuality. Parents/carers have an important role to play in ensuring that their child goes to school and arrives on time: Under the Education Act 1996, parents/carers have a legal duty to ensure that their child receives full-time education between the ages of 5 and 16 Parents/carers are asked to write to the school with an explanation if their child has been absent for any reason When parents/carers know that their child is going to be absent for any reason, they should ask the headteachers permission in advance A childs appointments with the doctor, dentist etc should be arranged outside the school day where possible. The Lambeth CYPS Exclusions, Reintegration, Attendance and Admissions Service (ERAA) can help children who are having difficulties which affect their school attendance. Parents/carers can contact ERAAs Education Welfare Team for help and advice.

Health There is a nurse attached to every school. If there are any problems, the school nurse will make sure that your child has the right support. If you already know that your child has a medical condition, you should tell the headteacher or SEN department before he or she starts school. Meeting a range of needs Lambeth Council aims to ensure that all children have the educational opportunities they need to reach their full potential. We offer a range of specialist services to meet a wide range of needs. Lambeth schools and nurseries must report to the Lambeth Children and Young Peoples Service any concerns they have about the safety or well being of a pupil, as part of their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Usually any concern that the school or nursery has will be discussed with the childs parents/carers first and agreement sought to make the referral to Lambeths Children and Young Peoples Service. However, parents/carers will not be contacted where it is felt that to do so will place the child at an increased risk of significant harm. In any event parents/carers need to understand that all referrals are made in the best interest of the child. Parents/carers can help prevent unnecessary child protection referrals by letting the school know about any accidental injury, illness or upset which might otherwise cause school staff to be worried about their child.

Lambeth services for under fives and families

A range of childcare and family support services for under fives and their families is available in Lambeth. Each provides an environment for children, which is safe and healthy, with an enjoyable learning curriculum. Services are delivered flexibly to suit different family circumstances.

Provision for under fives includes: 27 Children's Centres and 3 satellite venues that provide integrated childcare and education all year round for 0 - 5 year olds as well as health and family support services. Childminders are linked to Children's Centres as Associate Carers and through childminder drop-ins.

Over 100 private, voluntary and independent nurseries, pre-school and crches for children 0 - 5 years of age. 15 Stay and Play One O'Clock Clubs providing an open access service for children under five and their parents/carers. Parents/carers and toddler groups run by parents/carers and voluntary organisations offering opportunities for parents, carers and childminders to meet while their children play alongside each other. Childminders available to offer flexible childcare places for children 0 - 14 years old including care at flexible times during the day, all year round and school pick up/drop off.
