Thus far, only concentric loads on fastener groups have been discussed. Stresses in the fasteners have been treated as if the applied loads passed through the centres of gravity of the fastener groups. Each fastener was assumed to provide the same amount of resistance in supporting the load. The direction of the resistance or reaction was assumed to be parallel and opposite to that of the applied load. However, when a load is applied eccentrically to a group of fasteners, it does not pass through the centre of gravity of the group as outlined in Figures 6-1 through 6-3 below. ECCENTRIC CONNECTIONS
Figure 6-1
Figure 6-2
Figure 6-3
Consequently the fasteners must resist a twisting or rotating effect in addition to resisting the equal load each must take, if loaded concentrically. This rotation and translation can be reduced to a pure rotation, about a single pint, called the instantaneous centre of rotation, or more simply the instantaneous centre as shown in Figures 6-4 and 6-5 below. High-Strength Bolts For connections where the eccentric load causes both shear and tension in the bolts, the following design method may be used when the fasteners are high-strength bolts that have been tightened to the specified minimum initial tension. A bracket connected by means of bolts with an initial tension Ti is shown in Figure 6-18 below. Both simple and unwieldy methods are available for determining tension that is applied to the upper bolts by the load on the bracket. Generally the simpler solutions are considerably more conservative than the more accurate but unwieldy ones. The solution presented here is easy to use and conservative.
Figure 6-18 The neutral axis is assumed through the centre of gravity of the bolt group. Those bolts above the axis are said to carry the tension while those below are considered to be in compression, so that the applied moment is resisted by a couple applied at the resultants of the upper and lower bolts. The upper bolts are all taken to be equally loaded; this plastic stress distribution is justified by results that are still conservative compared to more precise methods. Bolt Tension from the applied moment is therefore:
Fasteners in the top half of the connection are subjected to tension, from both the applied moment and from prying (if any), and shear. Bolts in the bottom half are subjected to shear only, with top and bottom bolts participating equally.
http://courses.dowco.com/condes/mod/resource/view.php?id=481
2012-03-16
The connection should be proportioned so that the bolt tension Ti due to the moment PL (plus bolt tension due to prying), when combined with the bolt shear, meets the requirements of CAN/CSA-S16-01 for bolts subjected to combined shear and tension. Thee relevant clauses are 13.12.1.3 for bearing-type connections and 13.12.2.3 for slip-critical connections.

where Vr = Factored shear capacity per bolt. Vf = Factored beam end reaction. Tf = Factored diagonal brace force. In this Example: It should be noted that this example would normally combine gravity and seismic loads. When this is the case, the Standard permits the use of a load combination factor which may reduce the maximum force per bolt. The use of this factor has been ignored for the following reasons: Ignoring the load combination factor is always conservative. Using the load combination factor in these joints makes the calculation much more complex.

The tensile force in the brace causes tension in the bolts on line A-A, and compression on the other side of the centroidal axis. The maximum value of y is 193 for bolts in tension. On Line A-A Bolt Tension:
If the brace force was in compression this would cause tension on the bolts at line BB In this case: y = 470 - 193 = 277 mm
Beam Flange t = 9 mm (very thin for bolts in tension) The bending resistance of the bottom flange of the beam must now be checked using the prying action calculation (covered in Module 7). If the flange is too thin then more bolts must be added or stiffeners provided to increase the flange bending capacity. Note if the brace resists compression and tension the bolt group should be symmetrical about the column centre line to equalise the tension forces in the bolts. In the example above the tension at lines A-A and B-B would be equal if the bolt group was symmetrical about the centre line of the column.

ConDes Module 6 Resources Simple Bracing Connection with No Eccentricity at the Joint
All this complexity can be avoided by separating the two connections, as shown in Figure 6-28 below, or by moving the work point, as shown in Figure 6-29. When the brace and column connections are separated, each connection is axially loaded hence there is no moment due to eccentricity. Note that if the brace force is compressive, the column connection will be tensile and the bending resistance of the beam flange must be checked. If the work point is moved down to the beam bottom flange (Figure 6-29), the connection is required to resist only the horizontal component of the brace force by shear in the bolts. The vertical component of the brace is resisted by the column and there is no moment at the connection. However, the beam must now resist a bending moment due to the horizontal component of the brace force times half of the beam depth. Since beams are designed to resist bending moments, it is likely that this will be acceptable to the Structural Engineer whose approval should be sought before changing the position of the work point.

A welded joint can be considered eccentric if the line of action of the applied force does not pass through the centre of gravity of the weld group. Welded eccentric joints should, if possible, be designed using the Tables 3-26 to 3-33 in the Handbook. These tables are computed using the instantaneous centre of rotation method and give good agreement with test results. When eccentric joints cannot be designed using the above tables the method of analysis in which the vector sum of the factored longitudinal and transverse shear loads does not exceed the factored resistance of the weld is recommended. This method was used in module 3, section on Formulae for Factored Force / Unit Length of Weld Vf, example No. 3.

ConDes Module 6 Resources Eccentric Load on Weld Groups - Shear and Moment
Two configurations involving a vertical load applied out-of-plane with respect to the fillet weld group are shown in Figure 6-36. In Figure 6-36(a), a plate is welded to the flange of a column with a pair of vertical fillet welds. The eccentricity of the load, P, with respect to the weld group is denoted by aL, where L is the weld length. In Figure 6-36(b), a stiffened seat is welded to the column using a tee-shaped weld configuration. The length of the horizontal welds is denoted by kL.
Figure 6-36 In both welded connections (a) and (b), the eccentric load causes the lower portions of the welded parts to bear against each other. Various approaches have been proposed for modeling the bearing of the plate at ultimate load. Dawe and Kulak (1974) used a triangular stress distribution together with the instantaneous centre of rotation method. Table 3-34 Table 3-34 has been computed based upon the use of E49XX electrodes and Fy = 300 MPa following the method outlined by Dawe and Kulak. The coefficient C' (P/L) is tabulated for various plate thicknesses t and fillet weld sizes. For joints using lower strength materials the value of C' may be multiplied by Fy / 300. The tabulated values are conservative when fused with plate material in excess of 300 MPa yield. The maximum value of C' is determined by shear in the plate and is accounted for in the tabulated values. Given A 12 mm plate carrying a 175 kN factored load is welded to a column with a pair of fillet welds 250 mm long. Find the fillet wield size required if the 175 kN load acts at and eccentricity of 130 mm. Solution L = 250 mm aL = 130 mm; therefore, a = 130 / 250 = 0.52

C' required is P/L = 175 / 250 = 0.7 Try D = 6 mm fillet weld From Table 3-34, for t = 12 mm and 6 mm weld size: C' = 0.748 for a 0.50, and 0.623 for a = 0.60 Therefore a = 0.52, C' = 0.723 (by interpolation) > 0.7 The minimum weld size based on the thickness of the materials joined and the resistance of the connected parts must also be checked.
