Salem Chronicles
The Accused Asking For Help
November 23, 1692 Salem, Massachusetts Dear Reverend Dansforth, Aye old friend, many years its been. I believe life in New York was as you planned? New York such a beautiful place. If these events were to be foretold I would have joined you. However, no one could have seen this coming. It is utter chaos here in Salem. The devil walks amongst us and corrupts our minds. In the event of these young lads accused of committing witchcraft, I was sucked in. Aye, I cant believe it myself. Their words have spoken. I raise a finger and they clench. I twist my neck they cry out in agony for their necks. I move a leg they accuse me of having to bewitch them and controlling their legs. To such accusations I was thrown in jail. Their ringleader Abigail has the stage set. Ive been locked in this hell cell. My mind has gone astray. Reverend Dansforth, Old friend, I am lost. Ive come down to my last and dissipating hopes. I was arrested upon a day like this. Sun was out and gleaming over my head. I felt the warmth and yet I felt the evil wisp in the air. Those young lads came walloping over and appeared to be flying in my direction claimed it was my spirit controlling them. My arrest has brought about a scare amongst the people and some even neighbors are afraid to defend my innocence. Aye, I never had to say cause ye should know. I plead Innocent. I am a man of many things but never a sinner. Dansforth head my words, I am nearing my end. I seek your guidance as ever before. This trial, this cell, these accusations, the whispers, the gossip, the voices, the images, the silence are eating at me. Share your wisdom for I seek your advice. What am I to do? Time is of the essence. I can hear the noose being established. Help me old friend for my time is nearly up. Sincerely, Andre Trialed as a Witch

Looking for adventure? Salem is the best place to visit if you are looking for mysteries and interesting things. It is most widely known as the site of the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692, thats why its also known for the witch city. Thats why the police badges say the witch city on it too. And this colorful, coastal city has much to offer both residents and visitors (a culturally diverse population, a rich maritime heritage, an impressive display of historic architecture and amazing stories that span almost four centuries)

There are many tours and museums that cater to the morbid interest that people still have about the Salem Witch Trials. The "Witch House" dates from the days of the first Puritan settlers (1642). It was the home of a witch trial judge; Jonathan Corwin. It has become a major tourist attraction. The house still retains its authenticity and its original spooky quality.

The Salem Witch Museum is a must-see sight. Reenactments of the Witch Trials are performed, as well as an informational show.

Books and educational materials are on sale here, many of which are locally produced and cannot be found elsewhere.

One of the most historic--and saddest--stops in Salem is The Old Burying Point. It's a very old cemetary, containing the bodies of many Puritans dating from the late 1600s. The bodies of those who were hanged during the Salem Witch Trials are not buried here (it cannot be determined where their bodies are), but there is a memorial site for these individuals. Crucible readers should recognize many names.

Family Adventures in Salem Families with kids of all ages will enjoy the hour-long trolley tour operated by the Trolley Depot leaving from the Visitor's Center on New Liberty Street (follow the signs from anywhere downtown). After you get an overview of the town, spend some time at the Pickering Wharf, a waterfront dining and shopping area with plenty of free parking. You can see the ships and schooners, leave for a whale watch, have an ice cream cone or get your fortune told by one of the plentiful psychics in the area. You won't want to miss the House of Seven Gables, made famous by Salem resident and author Nathaniel Hawthorne (and shown above). Located at 54 Turner Street, the house and grounds is the centerpiece of Salem's historic district. There are gardens to wander through, a caf and museum with rotating exhibits, and, of course, a gift shop. (The House of Seven Gables is probably best for kids over age 10.)Another site not to miss is the Peabody Essex Museum, located at East India Square, right across from the Visitor's Center. Many of the Museum's collections began with items brought back from foreign lands by Salem's traveling sons, the sea captains. Now recognized as a site for world-class exhibits, the Peabody Essex Museum has something for everyone, from antiquities to art, activities for the kids and more.

THE CRUCIBLE
For the blacklist has been up for a couple of weeks now. A list which stated the names of the undercover Communist living in the United States. I myself didnt pay much mind to the list, for if the people that it was condemning were rightfully planning on over throwing our government then they should be punished. Yet one day I saw printed as clear as glass the name Fernando deleon, which belonged to me. Fifteen years ago I attended a political meeting which I thought was for voicing new ideas in politics. This very meeting is why Im being blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. My career as a writer in Hollywood has tumbled down without a warning. No one wants to be associated with me or merely seen walking at my side, for they fear to be called a Communist too. I dont know how to put an end to the false proclamations for no one else seems to come out of these trials the same. I had never thought I would find myself in such an unbearable situation, I could have never guessed I would be called a Communist. It had come to my attention a new rather talked about play named The Crucible by Arthur Miller. This book strangely came out at the perfect time, where society is going through a much similar struggle. I read the play within one day and its content truly shocked me. In the Crucible they have a witch hunt where they are searching for all the witches in their town. Now, here instead of searching for all the witches they are searching for all those who are Communist in our town. For in both trails there is no real poof to show that the person is guilty. They are going by what others say, or unstable facts they dont have proof of. Miller had a clear understanding of the injustice that was going on and saw an opportunity and he took it. It was clear that the Salem Witch Trials was soon found out to be a fraud, and Miller is straightly comparing to the fraud that is happening now. We must fight against this. Read Arthur Millers The Crucible and youll understand more about the time in which you are living in. By: Cristy Bonilla
