A vertical steel rod, 1300mm long, is rigidly securedat its upper end and a weight of 80 N is allowed to slide freely on the rod through a distance of 100 mm on to the stop at the lower end. The upper 700 mm length of the rod has a diameter of 20 mm while the lower 600 mm length is 16 mm in diameter. Calculate the maximum stress induced in the bar ignoring the extension of the bar in determining the potential energy given by the weight E = 2 x 105N/mm2. The compositebar consistingof steel and aluminium components as shown in figure 2 is connectedto two grips at the ends at a temperature of60oC.Find the streosesin the two rods when the temperature falls to 20oC.

Find the diameter of the shaft required to transmit 60 kW at 150 rpm. If the maximum torque is likely to exceedthe mean torque by 25 % for a maximum permissible shear stresS of 60 N/mm2.Find also the angle of twist for a length of2.5 meters. Take C = 8 x 104N/mm2.
A thin tube 60 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick is subjected to a torque. Find this torque if the permissible shear stress is 80 N/mm2. If the tube is 600 mm long, find the twist of the tube. Take C = 8 x 104 N/mm2. A beam AB 10 meters long has supports at ets end A and B. It carries a point load of 5 kN at 3 meters from A and a point load of 5 kN at 7 meters from A and a uniformly distributed load of 1 kN per meter between the point loads. Draw SF and EM diagrams for the beam.

What is meant by governing of Turbine ? Explain the governing of Reaction turbines. A Kaplan turbine prod~ces25 MW operating under a head of 40 m. The blade tip diameter is 2.5 times the hub diameter and the overall efficiency is 0.9. If the speed and flow ratio are 2.0 and 0.6 respectively, calculate the diameter and the speed of the turbine. How do you classify centrifugal pumps ? A centrifugal pump has an impeller of diameter 325 mm and backward curved blades making an angle of 300 with the direction of rotation. It runs at 1450rpm. The velocity offlow is 1.5 m/s and in constant through the impeller. Estimate the percentage of kinetic energy recovered in the volute casing if the hydraulic efficiency is 0.88. -Explain the working of fluid coupling. A single stage,single cylinder ( 110mm x 125mm) air compressor has 3% clearanceratio. The air is taken inside the compressor at 1 bar 290 K. The delivery pressure is 6.5 bar and the mass of air delivered per minute is 1.75 kg.
