OUR NEWEST

SEMINARIAN JAMES MALIK

Hello fellow St. Johns Parishioners!
I am happy to finally put a name, face, and a bit of a back story to the new mystery seminarian from SJB. My name is James Malik IV. I am the son of Jim and Lesley Malik. My dad and I lector, and my mother chants and sings in the choir. We have been parishioners at St. John the Baptist for 12-13 years now. I was confirmed here, dabbled in youth ministry, and most recently completed my first year as a catechist, teaching Religious Education to the sixth graders. Throughout my time at St. Johns, but especially in the past year, I have come to a deep appreciation for the community of our diverse parish. From the staff and administration to the weekday warriors at daily mass, I have met some incredible people here. I couldnt be more excited and honored to represent our great family here at St. John the Baptist, with Shaun Cieslik, as I begin my priestly formation for the Diocese of Joliet.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Alright, so we know how great our parish is, now let me tell you about how great I am.

Totally kidding.
But, I will give you a quick rundown of my hearing the call. I really started forming and living out an adult Catholic faith in early 2010 when I was taking the last course Page 3

towards my undergraduate degree online, here in Winfield. I soon found a job mentoring troubled young men at Mount Carmel, a Catholic-based youth ranch in Wyoming. In March of 2011, after nearly a year of my mentorship, I felt called to the priesthood at a Eucharistic retreat we took the boys to in Cody. Having never seriously considered or considered period - pursuing the priesthood, I was initially hesitant, fearful, mostly shocked. When I returned to Winfield two months later, it wasnt until a hot, humid day in early summer, sweatin out Eucharistic Adoration here in the chapel at St. Johns, that I was moved to action. After getting in touch with Father Burke Masters, our dioceses ace vocations director, I began attending discernment group meetings, Spirit & Truth meetings, the ordination of Father Steven Borello, last June, talking with other seminarians, and shortly after began the application process for admittance to the Diocese of Joliets priestly formation program. I was officially accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Joliet this past March, and it has been recommended that I begin my formation at St Meinrad Seminary in southern Indiana this August. Because of my previous education, I will begin in Pre-Theology I. After the successful completion of the two-year Pre-Theology program, I would then begin a four-year Theology program, culminating in ordination to the priesthood. As the beginning of the fall semester draws nearer, I am growing in excitement and expectation. While I am more fully understanding the implications of Thy will be done (Mt 6:9), I am also learning that, if we let go, [the] yoke is easy, and [the] burden is light (Mt 11:30). On my journey, I welcome your prayers and support, and encourage you to contact myself or either of my parents if you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hello. I look forward to sharing the fruits of my formation with all of you. Peace in Christ,

James
A Fathers Day Prayer
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless the men of our parish and of our families, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time In todays Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of Gods kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christs disciples has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout the world. Good stewards go about Gods business of planting seeds among all those they encounter. What will we do this week to add to Gods kingdom?

Summer Weekday Mass Schedule

During the summer, Fr. Thomas will be away at a Convocation of his religious order, The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, and he will also be going to summer school during the early mornings for three weeks to study liturgy. Because of his schedule and the vacations for Fr. Henry & Fr. Tom, we will have a reduced weekday Mass schedule.

Monday thru Friday, we will be having only the 7:30 a.m. mass during the week.
We will resume the 8:30 a.m. mass in the fall.

Bulletin Bits
Seeds that take root in one season eventually start to show signs of life. Fields once dormant become verdant. Flowerbeds display their colors. Similarly, the seed of Gods Word takes root in our lives. We can look and see it grow before the eyes of our hearts. We become God Stewards when we nurture Gods word, and bear great fruit for His Kingdom.

Keep St. John the Baptist Parish in mind when doing your estate planning.

St. John the Baptist School News

SPARE CHANGE SAVES BABIES

THANK YOU for your participation in this charitable project that will help teens and young women in need who are faced with an unexpected pregnancy. The return dates for the baby bottles are this weekend, June 16 and June 17. All donations will help support the life-saving work of Woman's Choice Services, which is a non-profit pregnancy resource center which aids women by providing compassionate counseling, social service referrals, and material goods. With this help, women see they have a real choice for themselves and their infants. This is a wonderful way to show your support for life and for children to learn the beauty of giving to help others. Thank you for participating in this worthy cause. Helping Those in Need During these tough economic times, St. Vincent DePaul Society invites you again to remember the needy persons and families in our parish and in the greater Winfield community by using the monthly St. Vincent de Paul contribution envelope that appears in your regular envelope packet...or by making a contribution in the Poor Box in the narthex of the Church by the back window. Remember, any contributions you make by check are tax deductible. Thank you!
~ Mike McGrath, President, St. Vincent de Paul Society

Happy Birthday, Spiritually Adopted Baby!

Your spiritually adopted baby was born this month-nine months after her mother conceived her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. She is no different now than before birth except that she breathes and eats differently. She is truly a miracle. She began as a 46-chromosome cell and has grown over the past nine months into this unique human baby we now can see. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is exactly like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved her life. Thank you on behalf of all the little babies and their mothers for your loving prayers that helped to bring them to birth so that they might have life and have it to the full! Give prayerful thanks to God for his most precious gift to humanity-Jesus Christ, His only son. The information provided in the articles over these past weeks and months was received from the Joliet Diocesan Life Office.

school supplies for the children. For many children, these donations were the first books and school supplies they had ever received. This year, we are asking for these school donations earlierthe end of Sept or the first part of October. This will allow the shipment to be mailed at a normal rate and not air express. Natalie Bayce, our liaison, sent me a note saying: I heard from the Philippines and they said they would be grateful for anything that St. John can provide. There will be 9 children in pre-school is the Fall and there are 80 children from 1st through 8th grade. I have a feeling that many go on to high school. Just to tell you about the cost of shipping, last February, I sent two boxes of toys, school supplies, shoes and clothing. It arrived on April 16th. It cost me $150 to send the boxes and it sure is a lot cheaper than what customs and Philippine airlines wants for us to bring these items. If we could possibly have the drive at the end of Sept or first part of October, I would send them this way. I told Natalie, we would do our best to get the supplies to her so she could ship them to arrive around the same time she arrives! Please, when you see the supplies on sale, pick up extras and place them in the receptacles at the entrances of the church! Thank you everyone for all your donations! Crisis Pregnancy Center Opens in Joliet

JOLIETPerhaps not a moment too soon, a new 2,500 square-foot crisis pregnancy center will open this week at 2423 Glenwood Ave., two blocks west of Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Woman's Choice Services, a Catholic pregnancy help network based in Lombard, has outgrown its Crest Hill location and expanded its services to women in need. The real beauty of the new center is that we can now offer ultrasounds in Joliet as well as in Lombard. This is one of the most effective tools we have for saving lives, as the majority of abortion-minded women who have come through our doors and have seen the ultrasound image have chosen life for their babies. Along with free ultrasounds, Woman's Choice Services also provides free pregnancy testing, unplanned pregnancy counseling, mothering and now will be able to hold programs and parenting classes, post-abortion recovery, pregnancy support, and agency referrals. Please join us on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. as Bishop R. Daniel Conlon will join the staff and Board members of Woman's Choice Services, to preside at the grand opening ceremony for our new office. To find out more about us or to donate to this life-saving cause, please visit us online at www.isupportwcs.com

Presented in Sebahar Hall All classes start at 7 p.m. The first four classes are June 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2012
This DVD series which has played on PBS is a visual delight and will teach you the incredible history of our faith tradition.
JOIN BISHOP CONLON IN PRAYER

Our Bishop, the Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon will come out to pray the rosary on Wednesday, June 20th at 9:30 a.m. at the Glen Ellyn (Aanchor) Abortion Clinic, 1186 Roosevelt Road, just east of the House of Brides. Please join us. You are also very welcome to join the regular rosary group every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. There are people at the clinic praying every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. while sidewalk counselors are trying to offer hope and help to the young people who enter there. Your presence and your prayers are very much appreciated. Come and meet Bishop Conlon and thank him for standing up with us on the moral issues of our day.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) this summer is conducting a Fortnight for Freedom to begin with the vigil of the feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fischer and culminate with Independence Day. The purpose of this effort is to issue a call to defend religious liberty, and to urge the laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. We will be providing prayers over the next three bulletins that can be prayed during June 21 through July 4, 2012. Also, the entire list of prayers can be found on the St. John the Baptist website, stjohnwinfield.org.

We know prayer can make miracles and we (may have) witnessed it a number of times in our life. The change in the Communist countries is the best example for that. Today we need freedom to practice our faith without restrictions of any kind. So let us answer the call of the Church in our country for the fortnight of prayer. Prayer with penance will be answered immediately.
Fr. Thomas Theneth CMI

A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21-July 4, 2012

Prepared for the people of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois Day 1: Thursday, June 21, 2012 Please read Romans 3:21-26 Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his Blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, through the forbearance of Godto prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. Day 2: Friday, June 22, 2012 Sts. John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, Martyrs Let us pray: O God, martyrdom have brought true faith to its highest expression, graciously grant that, strengthened through the intercession of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More, we may confirm by the witness of our life the faith we profess with our lips. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Day 3: Saturday, June 23, 2012 Vigil of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist Grant, we pray, almighty God, that your family may walk in the way of salvation and, attentive to what St. John the Precursor urged, may come safely to the One he foretold, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Day 4: Sunday, June 24, 2012 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Solemnity Like St. John, we are born to proclaim in word and work who Jesus is and the impact that Christ has over all of life. Psalm 63: O God, you are my God- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is better than life; my lips offer you worship! I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands calling on your name. My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall that you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me. But those who seek my life will come to ruin; they shall go down to the depth of the earth! They shall be handed over to the sword and become the prey of jackals! But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by the Lord shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be shut! Let us pray: O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord, give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

During the Fortnight for Freedom, beginning this Thursday, June 21, and continuing for 14 days, to Independence Day, July 4, the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called dioceses nationwide to prayer, education, and action in support of religious freedom. Please offer the following prayer daily during the FORTNIGHT: Prayer for Religious Freedom
Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1). We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; by your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Some additional prayer ideas: Attend a daily Mass during the FORTNIGHT, join in the Rosary prayers following the 7:30 a.m. daily Masses at our parish, offer a day of fasting in union with the prayers of our nation, spend time in Eucharistic Adoration in the parish Chapel. Adoration begins
after 7:30 a.m. Mass every Tuesday and continues 24 hours, to the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
