Areas of Training 1. Familiarization with workplace activities and ethics in an office

Berkman International, Inc. is primarily an office type workplace. Unlike its sister company Berkman Systems, Inc. that deals with both consultation and environmental testings and certification, Berkman International, Inc. deals purely with consultation and project management. This means that no equipment or apparatus was used during the on-the-job training. The trainee was immersed purely in office work; including all activities, ethics and proper decorum inside the workplace. She was required to wear at least smart casual from Monday to Thursday and casual on Friday.

2. Immersion in actual environmental consultation project (Designation as Research Assistant) During the orientation with Mr. Regidor Sastre, he mentioned that the trainee would be assigned as a research assistant to a specific project with the Department of Public Works and Highways as the client. The full title of the project is Conduct of Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Institutional Capacity Development. The work as research assistant basically consisted of making annotative bibliographies of secondary documents for the said project, coordinating the consultants needs and concerns to the consultation firm and to assist the consultants in completing their reports. The consultants of the project are Dr. Lope Villenas and Dr. Emmanuel Luna. 3. Familiarization with formal written reports, formal letters and memorandums Many formal written documents go about the office and other agencies they communicate with. For instance, a memorandum is always necessary when disseminating vital information inside the office. Also, a lot of formal written reports have to be done in order to update everyone involved in the project of

15

what has traversed during a span of time. Example of this report is the monthly progress report, submitted each month, and the inception report, submitted after the preliminary assessment of the project. 4. Familiarization with process and documentation of Environmental Management Plan, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Impact Statement One important aspect of the training is the students involvement in making an EMP, an EIA and an EIS. Many protocols need to be followed strictly because those documents are the pre-requisite of a project to get and Environmental Compliance Certificate or ECC.

5. Familiarization with project-related and disaster-related Resettlement Action Plans Together with the technicalities of a project, it is also important to note of the society related aspects. One of the most important documents encountered during the training was the Resettlement Action Plan. It is a formal written document that describes how project affected people will be resettled.

Personal Evaluation Of the Training Program

28

Significant Achievements The trainee believes the most significant achievement she had during the training was that she was able to at least begin with the annotative bibliographies of the secondary references in DPWH. This is because she was able to provide the best service that she can to the company. She was also able to maximize what she has learned both in Research I and Research II because her technical, analytical and creative writing skills were put to use. Technical Skills and New Technology Learned Very few technical skills and new technology can be learned from Berkman International, Inc. Moreover, they can only be learned from the secondary references encountered during the training. For instance, the trainee only learned about the different surveying techniques from a workbook at DPWH and its not even related to her course. If one wishes to acquire new technical skills and learn new technologies, Berkman International, Inc. is not the place for them. Equipment, Machinery, Testing Apparatus, etc. handled It is very unfortunate that there werent any equipment, machinery or testing apparatus to be handled during the training. Without any exaggeration, the only equipment that the trainee came across with are the computer, photocopy machine, fax machine, binding machine, telephone, scanner and printer; but even then there was still a lot to learn because sometimes even the simplest things confuse or amaze me. Moreover, those pieces of equipment were very crucial when she was tasked to be a research assistant especially when it came to summarizing reference materials. Some had to be copied or noted because they could be used as a main reference for the DPWH institutional capacity building. The trainee is very appreciative of the chance to handle them somehow.

29

Experience with the Company Personnel Involved In the Training Working at a consultation firm gives trainees the opportunity to meet many people, mostly consultants, albeit the fact that sometimes one can only converse with them a couple of times because most of them never stay in the office. It was very exciting to converse with consultants because its not the technicalities of the work that one learns from them, but the experience from it all; the ups and downs of a certain project when its already being implemented. The only ones besides the consultants who stay in the office are the project manager (Mr. Regidor Sastre), the utility (Mr. Servanez), the office clerk (Mr. Carl Sastre) and the business development specialist (Ms. Virtusio). The trainee had no problem with any of the people at the office. In fact, she had fun because she found herself always giggling at the jokes that they would pull off. Things are more serious at the DPWH office but she still found the people there to be very accommodating. She was even given the favor of a ride on the way home because the chief environmental specialist, Ms. Rose Marie Del Rosario lived in Marikina where it was only a short jeepney ride away from her home in Antipolo. Strong Points The thing that the trainee appreciated from Berkman International, Inc. is their initiative to place students in actual projects. This is a strong point and is very advantageous to students because they will really have a feel of what it is like to work in the industry. Weak Points and Suggested Solutions The weakest point she saw from the company is that they can only offer the students office work if the student is not assigned to a particular project. This is dreadfully boring and disadvantageous to the students because they will not be able to maximize what they have learned at the university.

30

Recommendations

31

Potential of the Company as a Training Ground Availability and Appropriateness of Facilities, Equipment and Machinery For those who would really like to explore the full extent of the Chemical Engineering profession, I dont recommend Berkman International, Inc. as a training ground because the trainees would only mostly deal with office work. No hands on activities will be included in the training unless maybe the students are fortunate enough to be assigned to a project related to the degree. However, if the trainees wish to delve into various areas of research and development, particularly environmental studies and management, Berkman International, Inc. is a good company to get some training. They could be assigned as research assistants to a particular project. The trainees will be able to come across many references, reports and documents that are essential to the implementation of many projects. They will also be able to get a taste of how it is to work on many projects with different people of an assortment of rankings, from consultants to engineers and even to office utility men and women. The company may not be able to provide hands on training but they provide the experience on how it is to be in an actual training ground because the company officials really let you do actual work and not just a sort of practice. They will really let you feel of how it is like to be part of the company. They will also be able to provide the experience of how it is like to be involved in actual research and development. Company Personnel Cooperation Working at Berkman International, Inc. sometimes gets me pressured because it is really an office where students are trained to work as if they are really a part of the company. I really have to get things done on time even if they dont mention it. On the other hand, it is also one of the most fun filled offices Ive been to. I highly recomment this company in terms of personnel cooperation because students are welcomed there with in a very light atmosphere.

32

Duration of the Training From my perspective, the duration of the training is just right for a chemical engineering student like me. This is because I was exposed purely to office work and roughly four to five weeks is just enough time for a trainee to learn about an office. However, if I were assigned to a chemical plant, a testing and standards firm (like Berkman Systems, Inc.), or something of the sort, I would think that four-five weeks of training is too short for the reason that a lot of things have to be learned in terms of hands-on activities. It is advisable for students to be exposed to this type of training much longer. This way, the student will be able to maximize what he has learned in school specially the ones related to laboratory and unit operations equipment.

Suggestions for the Improvement of the Training Program From the schools viewpoint, I believe that the duration of the training program should be extended; not only for a few more hours but for an entire semester. However, the student must make sure that he will be able to enter a company that offers a formal and hands-on training program to ensure that this time will not be wasted to mere office work. I hope that the school administration would take this into consideration whenever they revise the curriculum. From the companys perspective, Id like to suggest that they assign students to a project that is somewhat related to chemical engineering. However, this standpoint has its drawback since it can only be done if such a project is available at the time. The student also has to participate in this project selection because he will be the one to address his training needs to his supervisor. He is the one who knows how the training is related to his degree.

33

Advise to Future On-The-Job Trainees Choose a company wisely. Take your time in picking which one but not to the point that you will start your training late like I did. Be sure to maximize what you have learned in school and never be satisfied with just office work if you see nothing substantial in it. Yes, I was immersed in office work but I feel blessed when I entered Berkman International, Inc. because even though I wasnt able to experience hands on activities, I was still able to learn about the field I would like to go into someday. Every student should feel the same satisfaction during his training.
