Design Process Documentation Problem Identification Phase This phase began at the very beginning of the fall 2004

semester. The project partner, Kipp Scott, mentioned during our first meeting of the semester that an integration of Community Corrections and Court Services into the existing software was something that the three agencies would be interested in. I thus contacted Court Services and set up a meeting with them, in which I got to talk with a member of their staff (Cindy Houseman) and also got a copy of their current database system. After talking with them and sitting down with the database, I came to the conclusion that the project, in order to include all functionality as desired, will last well beyond my tenure on the team. However, a prototype design that will include the data that they need to collect can be done, and I am working on this. The motivation behind doing this project is that there is lots of information sharing between the three agencies, and they would like to facilitate an easier way to do this, thus the sharing of information using a central database would a good way to go, especially since a system is currently being developed for the Adult Probation Office. Specification Development Phase Taking the information I had available to me, I began to compile a requirements document for the project. This document consisted of what needs to be done to make the software act according to the desires of the project partner and Court Services. This document is too long to be included here, but is available on the T: drive under the folder Demeter Senior Design. As was mentioned before, the

requirements in this document take the project further than I will be taking it, however this document can be used by team members in future semesters to take what I have done, and build upon it to eventually meet the demands of the Adult Probation Office and Court Services. Conceptual Design Phase In this phase, potential solutions were investigated. I decided on a two solution approach to the problem. The first solution will consist of a long-term solution that will be implemented by future groups and not by me due to the level of complexity and time it would require. This design will use Windows authentication to identify which user has entered the software, and based upon this, the software will figure out which division the user is in and display the appropriate front end based upon this. The design I will be working on, however, will be an additional tab included in JDS.2GO that will include additional information. This will work as a temporary solution until both JDS.2GO can work properly and the larger design can be researched in a technical manner and implemented.
