It is assumed that you are familiar with strength of materials concepts (AM 220), static and dynamic failure analysis (ME 226) and dynamics of machinery (ME 222). If these things sound vaguely familiar, then it is time to dust o those notes and review the concepts. In this course we begin with 3 design case studies, which we will re-visit throughout the course. Any machine is going to be made up of dierent elements and the goal of this course is to understand how to design each of these elements in an integrated fashion (keeping in mind the overall design requirements of the machine, they are a part of).

Course Outline
1. Review: Static and Fatigue failure theories (PC: 3 lectures) 2. Design Case Studies: Portable air compressor, Hay-bale lifter and Cam Dynamics test xture (PC: 7 lectures) 3. Gears: Other alternatives to gear drives, Spur Gear tooth geometry revisited, Loads and stresses in Spur gears, Design of Spur gears for compressor drive train, Wormset geometry, Forces in Wormsets, Design procedure for wormsets, Design of Worm reducer for hay-bale lifter (PC: 10 lectures) 4. Shafts and Coupling Design: Attachments and Stress raisers, Shaft Power and Materials, Shaft loads and stresses and Shaft failure, Keyways and ts, Rigid and compliant couplings, Revisiting Flywheel design, Design of driveshaft for portable air compressor (PR: 9 lectures) 5. Bearings: Hydrodynamic bearings theory and design, Rolling element bearing selection, Design of hydrodynamic bearing for cam-test xture (PR: 7 lectures) 6. Springs: Helical Compression and extension springs, Torsion springs, Designing a return spring for cam-test xture (PC: 8 lectures) 7. Fasteners: Thread forms, Power screws and stresses in threads, Preloaded fasteners in tension, Controlling preload, Fasteners in Shear, Design of headbolts of portable air compressor (PR: 10 lectures) Book: R. L. Norton, 2000, Machine Design- An Integrated Approach, 2nd Edition, Pearson Education Inc. You are expected to attend all classes; Strict enforcement of minimum 75 % attendance for writing end-semester exam Signature sheets are circulated for attendance and cross-checked Proxy signatures will result in punishment for the entire class
