News from the States

California HealthCare Foundation Describes Benefits of Data Transparency
The California HealthCare Foundation released "Buried Treasure: Freeing California Data to Improve Health Care." The authors describe data transparency initiatives instituted by the Department of Health and Human Services and reviews efforts by New York and New Hampshire to share data through programs such as the all-payer claims database. The authors conclude with five suggestions for California to share health data that they argue will improve health care in the state.

UCLA Fact Sheet Describes American Indian and Alaska Native Diabetes Prevalence
The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research released "American Indian and Alaska Native Diabetes: Critical Information for Researchers and Policy-Makers." Using data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), researchers describe diabetes prevalence among American Indian and Alaska Native populations, including risk factors and access to care barriers in California, the state with the largest number of AIANs and where 16% of this population has diabetes. The authors also recommend key steps to ensure comprehensive and culturally appropriate interventions in affected communities.

Urban Institute Report on Washington Basic Health Program Report

The Urban Institute released "The ACA Basic Health Program in Washington State." Using the Washington State Population Survey (WSPS) and results from the Urban Institutes Health Insurance Policy Simulation Model (HIPSM), researchers estimated eligibility, enrollment, and costs for a Basic Health Program (BHP) for Washington State under the rules defined in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Among the findings, researchers estimate that more than 160,000 Washington residents would be eligible for BHP.
