Informe de Leitura Doutorando: Jos Santos Padilla Matria: Crescimento de Igreja (Dr. B.

Wolter) Data de entrega 18 25 de Julho de 2012 Reviso do livro: ChurchNext Dados do livro: Gibbs., Eddie, ChurchNext. Downers Grove, Illinois: Inter varsity Press, 2000. Dados do Autor: Eddie Gibbs. Edmund (Eddie) Gibbs is professor emeritus of church growth in the School of Intercultural Studies and has been on the faculty since 1984, after graduating with his DMin from Fuller in 1982. Gibbs and his wife Renee spent five years in Santiago and Quilpue, Chile, and in the following years, Gibbs served as home secretary of his mission, the South American Missionary Society. He later worked with the British and Foreign Bible Society for seven years, and during that time served as the training director for Mission England, culminating in six Billy Graham crusades in various English cities. Gibbs has authored 13 books in total, with some of his other publications including ChurchMorph (2009), LeadershipNext: Changing Leaders in a Changing Culture (2005), Emerging Churches: Creating Christian Community in Postmodern Cultures (2005) with co-author Ryan Bolger, Way to Serve (2003), Way to Go (2003), In Name Only (1994), Good News Is for Sharing (1993), and I Believe in Church Growth (1981, revised 1985, 1989). O livro: ChurchNext O problema abordado pelo autor: Obsolete models for ministry in the local Church without impacting the community and without transforming the local church. A tese do livro: Almost all churches in the west are marginalized by postmodernity, the pluralistic American context cries for a revolution in the way we do ministry relevant to the culture. To accomplish this daunting task becomes necessary a Missiological training of the pastor Contedo do livro: Chapter 1 deals with megatrends faced by the western society, the European phenomena is placed as warning to America by departing from a irrelevant past towards a significant future. Chapter 2 focuses on a missionary approach to a postmodern audience instead of a marketing strategy. The vulnerability of this approach is wisely outlined. The subject of chapter 3 is related to the dynamic shifts in society and the inconvenience posed by non-effective bureaucratic systems, which entangle the advancement of the church in the community. Chapter 4 is a very important issue considering the Theological-Missiological education for pastors ministering in the postmodern context, and then the writer turns to leadership aspects of the pastoral work. Chapter 5 works with the nature of the relationship between the leader and his followers as well as the character and spirituality of the pastor. The practice of basic

devotion models are presented such as prayer and bible reading to what the author calls lectio divina. Chapter 6 becomes a gap where the author addresses worship from a feel good perspective, willow Creek and Saddle Back are placed as examples of his issues on worship. Frankly I disagree with a emotion based approach to worship. 7 is a great chapter, discusses the real mission of the church, to go and infiltrate the community, divorcing the model of waiting for the lost to come in to the church. The sound growth is that which is the result of going out fishing in the high seas. In chapter 8 the author suggests effective approaches as to how should we present the gospel in a postmodern world. And chapter nine concludes the thesis of the book by making conscious American churches of their need to expand the frontiers of their Missiological endeavor not so much with the baby boomers but with generation X, if we fail in doing that; there will be no church tomorrow according to Gibbs. Eddie Gibbs discourses very precisely his strategy to reach out to the secular postmodern public by suggesting revolutionary approaches to the work of the church and pastoral rolls that may guarantee this process. Estrutura do livro: the book is divided in nine chapters very intertwined with one another, some received a brief introduction by stating the theme of the chapter, and most chapters have description of the previous and chapter. When Gibbs concludes is very explicit in the theme discussed Metodologia usada pelo autor: Gibbs starts with a analysis of the conditions surrounding the spectrum of the church and then establishes a Missiological approach to all his discussion. The main parts of the argumentation is quite direct and backed by a limited bibliography. Sua reao pessoal (Very pleasant and quite relevant to my ministry) Benefcios da leitura ( I consider very meaningful this reading because describes the reality we are living in the United States, we see the social phenomena every day buy some times we do not understand the basic dynamics of it. I was very favored with this reading. Pontos fortes e pontos fracos da leitura ou contedo do livro. The whole is very good, but the ambiguity of chapter six is just a gap resulting from a major problem related to real worship based on the Bible and its implications with Sabbath keeping. Pontos onde voc concorda definitivamente com o autor ( I agree with the author in regards to scenario by him described of the challenge to reach the unchurched and the main pastoral approach recommended.) e pontos onde voc discorda definitivamente do autor (Chapter six, his approach to worship is rather a laconic essay where his postulate to worship is reduced to personal experience and entertainment.).
