PERSONAL VALUES AND ETHICAL STANDARDS PAPER

Personal Values and Ethical Standards Paper

Values and ethics are central to any organization; those operating in the national security arena are no exception. The term for values and ethics are extremely broad terms, and we need to focus in on the aspects most relevant for strategic leaders and decision makers. Values are what we as a profession, judge to be right. They are more than words-they are the moral, ethical, and professional attributes of character. Values can be defined as those things that are important to or valued by someone. However, someone can be an individual or, collectively, an organization. One place where values are important is in relation to vision. One of the imperatives for organizational vision is that it must be based on and consistent with the organizations core values. The core values are integrity, professionalism, caring, teamwork, and stewardship. Values provide the basis for judgment about what is important for the organization to succeed in its core business. My values are set very high mostly contributed to my father and mother and what they taught me through out the years. They said If you want something you have to work hard to get it because nothing is ever handed to you. Another example would be the line of work that I do on a daily basis. I have worked in nursing homes, home nursing, private care, and on the psychiatric unit at Marietta Memorial Hospital. And all of these places have taught me the value of life, and what I want my goal to be and work hard at achieving it.

PERSONAL VALUES AND ETHICAL STANDARDS PAPER

I have heard other employees storys throughout working with the young and the old and it makes me want to do more with my life so that Im proud of myself and want to be able to help others around me to be able to help them want to achieve their goals in life. There have been times in my life where I came close to death. And it had opened my eyes to what is going on around me. Now I work hard, love life as it is, love my children whether good or bad and do for others and make sure that Im reaching my goals in life. I value anything and everything because I love life. And I know that sounds cheesy but its true. I have achieved and valued my goals I have set in my life and Im very thankful to the lord for helping me do all these things. The implications of the values of work I will do as a Human Service Professional is that I will up hold the laws and ethical standards and values set forth in the job I will do and set good examples for employees around me. I am sure there will always be conflicts in any job I acquire. Just like the value of setting your goals and achieving them you need to work at the conflicts one at a time until you are satisfied with the goals of the employees you set out to do. By implying my values as a Human Service Worker I will instill them in the work and projects that I will have to accomplish. I would like for the employees to show the same respect by giving me good work ethics and showing interest in the job that they do. As hopefully they will come to work everyday and show their examples to other workers as well. This will present a good working atmosphere and everyone will try to get along with each other because they are all here to do a job. When good jobs are shown between workers then there is promotions, getting a better job where there is not as much labor enforced and more of the thinking process incorporated.

I realize I will have those workers who like to slack at their job and be lazy but hopefully the other workers who value their jobs will set good examples for them to want to do better for themselves. However, when discussing a specific ethical dilemma in relation to the ethical standards of Human Service Professionals in which you will experience little difficulty due to accordance between ethical practice and your personal belief system. Although the first place to look in determining what is right or wrong is society. Virtually every society makes some determination. Experience often has led societies to develop beliefs about what is of value for the common good. Note that societies differ from one another in the specifics, but not in the general principles. One example is the notion of reciprocity, One good deed deserves another, Another is the notion of good intent. A gentlemans word is his bond. Yet, a third notion of appreciation of merit in others regardless of personal feelings. Give the devil his due. These are some ethic public morality: (1) Ethic of compromise and social integration (2) Ethic of public policy determination (3) Ethic of democratic responsibility (4) Service orientation and procedural fairness (5) Conflict of interest (6) Basic honesty and conformity to law. Basic honesty and conformity to law. The public servant is morally bound, just as are other persons, to tell the truth, to keep promises, to respect the person and the property of others, and to abide by the requirements of the law. In many ways, this level only describes the basic adherence to moral codes that is expected of all members of a group or society. There are some basics of behavior that are expected of all if a society is to function for the collective good. However, for public officials, there is additional reason why it is important to adhere to these basic moral codes and laws: they have more power than the average member of the society,

and hence more opportunity for violation of those codes or laws. There also is the negative example that misconduct by public officials provides. Conflict of interest relates to the public in human services, because it deals with the conflict between advancing the public working interest, in which a Human Service Worker is relied upon to do so, and advancing ones self interest. The duty here is to ensure that public workers interest comes first, and that one does not advance his own personal interest at the expense of other workers. Service orientation and procedural fairness relates closely to the last, and deals with the responsibilities of the public workers to ensure their actions serve the workers in the workplace. The moral obligation of public servants is to follow established procedures, and to use their power to circum vent those procedures for their own convenience or benefit. Power must be used fairly and for the benefit of the workers. When we think of public workers who have violated the moral and power to their benefit and convenience. However, democratic responsibility is where on is expected to cast their vote on their belief and what is good for the people. Their responsibility is to carry out the will of the people. The ethic of public policy determination involves the most difficult ethical choices, because it concerns making moral judgments about other policies. The responsibility is to make moral policies. The difficulty is in determining how moral a policy is. Public policies almost always deal with very complex issues, where ethical choices are rarely clear, and it is often difficult to determine if a policy is right or wrong. The ethic of compromise and social integration is an area not as salient as some of the others. It deals with the necessity for compromise in a society. A society with irreconcilable differences on fundamental issues torn apart. Rather than standing on principle, is moral, because

without compromise there will be discord and conflict, and disintegration rather than integration of the society. There are good and bad ethical choices it is up to us to promote the good in people. Values are what we, as a profession, judge to be right. Individually or organizationally, values determine what is right or wrong, and doing what is right or wrong is what we mean by ethics. To be have ethically is to behave in a manner consistent with what is right or moral. In considering having difficulty with are the controlling people who have to be right all the time. I have experienced this on my current job. And I have to explain to them without insulting their integrity This is how we were shown to perform this task. This is when my manager and administrator would not give this girl I work with a promotion because they stated you are to immature. You never insult a worker or make them look bad this is very unethical. The psychological tests in the courtroom are for the ones who want to plea insanity. The lie detector shows the court if the accused is lying about the answers to the questions in court. The boundaries of competence are when they talk about if the accused in the court is able logically to perform the tasks that they were accused. The integrity is judged in the court room to see if they were really smart enough to pull off such a hard crime. Sexual harrasement in the court room is where one had made sexual comments or sexual advances on a worker or friend in the work place or in public. Human differences is where in the court room is where two people have their own opinion and cannot see eye to eye on one subject.
