COURSEDESCRIPTION
Acoursedesignedforsocialwork,communitydevelopment,missions,sociology,andother socialsciencemajorsexploringthekeysocialproblemsandchallenges(pastandpresent)in IndiansocietyaswellasthebasiccontextswhichmakeIndiansocietyunique.Withinthis contextstudentswillexplorethepracticeofthesocialworkprofessioninIndiaandthemeans bywhichthesocialworkprofessionseekstoovercomeIndiassocialchallenges.Studentswill supplementtheirclassroomlearningwithfieldexperiencesatlocalnonprofits.

STUDENTLEARNINGGOALS
ToexaminethesocialissuesincontemporaryIndiansocietyanddevelopempathyforthesocial challengesfoundinIndia. 1. Understandthewaysinwhichthesocialworkprofessionaddressesthesesocial problems. 2. Gaingreaterawarenessofchallengestoeffectivepracticesuchasreligion,poverty,and discrimination.

INSTRUCTIONALMETHODS
1. LectureandClassDiscussion:Studentsareencouragedtoparticipateindiscussionsof issuesarisingfromthelectures. 2. ServicePlacements:StudentswillbeplacedwithlocalNGOsorotherorganizationsfora weeklyinternship/serviceplacementinordertogainhandsonexperienceina particularsocialworkfield. 3. WeekendTrips:Weekendtripswillincorporatefieldobservationvisitstoavarietyof differentNGOsinthecitiesvisited.

ASSIGNMENTS
OralPresentationandPresentationPaper: Atthebeginningofthesemesterstudentswillformfivegroupstopresentanoral presentationand3pagepaperattheconclusionofeachunit.Forexample,group1will presentonthecontentgiveninunit1,group2willpresentonthecontentgiveninunit 2,etcEachgroupmaychoosewhichunittopresenton,however,oncethegroups havemadetheirdecisiontheymustabidebyit.Presentationswillbescheduledinsuch amannerastogivestudentsareasonableamountoftimetoreflectonthecontentand preparetheirresponseaftertheunitscontenthasbeendelivered.Studentswillbe informedofthepresentationdatenolessthanoneweekinadvance.Presentations shouldbearesponsetoissuesarisingfromthereadingsandbasedonthetopicofthe unit.Morespecificpromptsmaybeprovidedbytheprofessororguestlecturer presentingtheunitinquestion.Thepresentationshouldfocusonstimulatingfurther discussionoftheissueandshouldincorporateatimeofdiscussionwiththeclassasa whole.Theclassdiscussionthatfollowsthepresentationshouldprovideopportunityto supplementandraisesalientissuesotherwisenotbroughtoutbythepresenters. Presenterswillbegiventhreeadditionaldaysafterthedateofthepresentationtoedit theirwrittenassignmentbasedontheissuesbroughtupinthediscussiontime.

FieldObservationPaper: StudentsparticipatingintheSocialWorkclasswillbeexpectedtoengageinobservation attheirregularinternship/serviceplacementsite.Onthebasisoftheseobservations studentswillwritea56pagepaperexplainingthemission,history,andactivitiesofthe organizationwithwhichtheyhavebeenplacedaswellascriticallyanalyzingthe organizationseffectivenessinmeetingitssocialgoalsandproposingpossible alternativemethodsthroughwhichtheorganizationmightbettermeetthosegoals. Thisassignmentwillbeinadditiontoallotheracademicassignmentsrequiredforthe internshipandwillbedueattheendofthesemester. FinalPaper: Studentswillwritea10pagepaperexaminingoneofthemajorsocialissuesinIndia broughtupinUnitsIIIIandproposingwhatsocialworkmethodologymightbemost effectivelyusedtoaddressthissocialproblemintheIndiancontext.Studentsshould supporttheirthesiswithrelevantexamplesandoutsideresearch.Further,students shouldcompareandcontrasttheirchosensocialissuewithsimilarsocialissuesinthe UnitedStatesandreflectontheapplicabilityofWesternsocialworkmodelsandsocial understandingstotheIndiancontext.Thepapershouldintegrateissuesofculture, religionandprofessionalpractice.ThispaperwillbedueonMarch27th.
