Electrical power distribution for Oil & Gas applications

Greater challenges...
Oil and gas companies must meet the challenges arising from greater demand for resources that are more difcult to access and extract. The heavy investments required must be returned faster. This requires state-of-the-art technology based on international know-how as well as extremely reliable and high-performance equipment.

...and consequent changes

For electrical distribution systems in the oil and gas industry, this means farreaching changes that call for new solutions.

Complex international projects

The high investments lead to a joining of operational forces. Project organization becomes more complex with international partners providing a vast array of different competencies. Engineering rms, contractors and oil companies want a partner with solid experience in this eld who can provide proactive support both locally and globally from the beginning to end of the project.

Know-how and experience

Continuity of service in electrical installations is vital to the protability of heavy investments in oil and gas production. Experience in electrical engineering and technical know-how are essential to work out the optimum solution among the many alternatives. The electrical partner must have the means to carry out the necessary studies on system architecture and on the operating dependability and reliability of networks. It must also have in-depth knowledge of local and international standards given the ever increasing importance of safety and environmental considerations.

Enhanced performance and reliability of equipment

The stringent specications for installations mean that performance levels must be high. The equipment must be standardized, but offer all the features required to optimize costs and energy availability. The trends below are now commonly observed. b Increasing power levels, with more and more electrical motors, particularly for MV applications. Sites up to 100 MW are now common and others can reach 700 MW b Increasing voltage levels, with MV distribution now prevalent, where 3.3 kV is often replaced by 11 kV b High currents up to 4000 A b High short-circuit currents, often 50 kA at 11 kV b Reductions in size and weight, made necessary by the constraints weighing on oating installations (offshore, FPSO, etc.) and the cost of shelters for onshore installations b More intelligent switchboards to facilitate integration in electrical monitoring and control systems (EMCS)

Schneider Electric global service

The work carried out for this project included: b Load ow and voltage prole studies v Sizing of equipment (cables, lines, transformers) according to the installed power v Calculation of voltage drops over the various links v Positioning of power transformer tap changers b Short-circuit current calculations v Maximum short-circuit current values (device sizing) v Minimum short-circuit current values (protection settings) b Protection study v Choice of protection devices v Determination of settings according to the various operating modes b Dynamic stability study v Determination of maximum fault clearing times enabling motors reacceleration v Impact of high power (7 MW) motor starting on voltage levels v Impact of voltage drops due to the upstream network (220kV) v Design of a load shedding plan

Detail of design services

Calculation of short-circuit currents These calculations are achieved using network modeling as dened in IEC 60909. They enable the maximum and minimum short-circuit currents (symmetric and asymmetric) to be determined for phase to phase and phase to ground faults. These calculations are essential for checking: b Making and breaking capacity of interrupting devices b Electrodynamic withstand of equipment (switchboards, busbars, etc.) b Thermal withstand of grounding devices b Site grounding characteristics b Protection settings Protection study This study enables the type of protection to be determined (over current, directional, differential relays, etc.) by taking into consideration the various technical and economic criteria of the oil process. Protection settings are dened according to: b Short-circuit currents of the different operating modes b Transformer switching currents b Motor starting or re-energizing currents b etc.

Dynamic stability study

The main objective of a network dynamic study for this type of installation is to estimate the behaviour of high power asynchronous motors should an electrical incident occur. For example, a phase to phase fault in the installation creates a voltage drop and the slowing of motors of substations close to the faulty feeder. If protection setting times are too long, the motors will slow too much to ensure that all loads can be fully brought up to speed once the fault has been cleared. Pre-determined load shedding will allow priority loads to be rescued. Furthermore, for this installation, the study enabled network behaviour to be checked should the automatic transfer system (ATS) installed in the main substation, operate. In the event of a fault on one of the 220kV/30kV transformers, the ATS ensures busbar changeover in less than 500ms. The simulation carried out enabled system stability and the re-energizing of high power motors to be validated.

Other electrical network studies

b Harmonics: control electrical pollution. b Overvoltages and insulation coordination: guarantee equipment dielectric

strength is respected according to expected overvoltage levels (permanent or temporary overvoltages or surges due to switching or lightning strikes).
b Dependability: guarantee the availability of electric power to increase the

reliability of installations adapted to the application. protected against electromagnetic disturbances.

b Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): design installations that are fully

Stakes
The project is the result of Qatars ambitions to develop export-oriented industries based on the vast reserves of its North eld. Forming part of this development, the Process and Utilities (PU) is a medium sized gas off-shore platform. The Living Quarters (LQ) platform is the accommodations site for PU personnel. Both form part of the off-shore installation located approximately 80 km from the Qatar coast. Gas and condensate are transported onshore by means of a 32 sealine (operated in diphasic mode) to Ras Laffan, where receiving facilities separate the condensate. The gas is then supplied to a nearby Liqueed Natural Gas plant.
