Fossil fuels are non-renewable source of energy.

The decomposed organic materials compressed under the surface of earth since millions of years are responsible for the formation of fossil fuels. The usage of fossil fuel increased with the coming of industrial revolution in the 19th century. Now it has become the important source of development. However, with the increasing development it has also become the main source for increasing environmental pollution. Lets have a brief look over the formation of fossil fuels, under the surface of the earth. The formation of Fossil Fuels Russian Scientist-Mikhail Lomnsov first introduced the theory of fossil fuels. According to him, the decompose organic materials (plants and animals) compressed in high pressure and temperature under the surface of the earth from the millions of years, form fossil fuels. The more precise theory of making of fossil fuels can be trace from the early age- around 400 million years ago. According to this theory, the dead plants, submerge under water and are deposited in mud, dirt and sediments.

Fossil fuels are the combination of three important sources of energy, coal, crude oil and natural gas. Coal, which is a very cost-effective form of fuel, is formed in the same process, as discussed above, by decomposition of plants. The main ingredients of coal are- carbon, nitrogen, sulphour and oxygen. There are various types of coal which are used anthracite, lignite and bituminous. Anthracite is one of the hardest form of coal where as lignite is the softest. Oil Oil is another important form of fossil fuel, which is used in petro chemical products, petroleum, gasoline, plastic, fabrics, kerosene, diesel and many more. It has been extracted through the process of drilling. Natural gas The components of natural gas are- methane, butane, propane, ethane and pentane. It is a very flammable gas. The common example of natural gas is LPG (liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is used for cooking. Pollution The combustion of fossil fuels is responsible for releasing around 22 billion tones of harmful gases per year, which includes carbon dioxide sulphour oxides, sulphour citrate and many more. This greatly affects the green house. The increase volume of carbon dioxide in the air is responsible for global warming. Now days due to increase pollution and harmful effects of fossil fuels, the emphasis is giving on renewable sources of energy- wind energy, solar energy and hydro energy. The thing, which should also be concerned, is the excessive use of fossil fuels resulting into the depletion of the natural resources. Therefore, the alternative sources of energy are the best solution for decreasing environmental pollution and saving the natural resources for the coming generation.
