TAMA

Tidewater/Albemarle Motorcycle Association

In southeastern Virginia and northeastern NC there is an organization to help the motorcycling community keep track of all
the rider events and assist in coordinating these activities, the Tidewater Albemarle Motorcycle Association (TAMA). While
the exact date that TAMA was established or who the original officers were is still a little unclear, it seems that collective
memory dates the association at over 15-20 years old. Today there is an average of about 17 clubs that participate in TAMA.
There are two primary objectives of TAMA. First, TAMA is a scheduling coordinator for local motorcycle clubs and associa-
tions. Local clubs and associations attend TAMA meetings and work together to schedule events on a yearly basis. Second,
is that TAMA provides for interaction between club members. We believe that it is this interaction that helps to break down
communication barriers between clubs and reduces potential conflict within the motorcycle community. When riders can
identify a name and face with another club, they are more willing to support riding events sponsored by other clubs.
TAMA meetings are held the third Thursday of each month (except in December) at the Golden Corral on the corner of
Battlefield Blvd and Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake, VA at 7:00 PM. The agenda of most TAMA meetings is to review and
edit the yearly schedule. In regard to ride events, established dates from the previous year have a leg up on new events or
new dates for old events. It is the last two categories that require some negotiation between the attending clubs to ensure
that events are not conflicting with one another.
TAMA meetings have other agenda items during the year. TAMA sponsors an annual Poker Run and Bike Show. Tradi-
tionally, the profits from this event are split equally between charities in Virginia and North Carolina. Participating clubs decide
how the funds will be distributed.
TAMA provides an opportunity for the Biker community to work together and still promote their individual clubs and asso-
ciations. At a basic level, TAMA is a great example of Bikers helping Bikers. It only works if the Biker community wants it to
work and if clubs work together to coordinate their events.
We invite all independent riders to attend our meetings and events as well as non TAMA clubs participation to help build
bridges between the area clubs and help build good will throughout the communities we live in.
TAMA encourages all clubs to attend the meetings and support each others events. This unity among Bikers is what
makes our lifestyle one worth living!

Driver her entire life and was loved very much by her
family and friends. This event is a wonderful way for her
friends and family to celebrate the memory of someone
so terribly missed by all. Sherri was tragically killed by a
hit and run driver 15 years ago while riding her Harley.
She loved nothing better than to ride – rain or shine

financially by the businesses who advertise with us & our Biker

of Thunder Roads which is how we are able to keep our magazine FREE for everyone. These are
the people who care enough for our motorcycle community to support what we do here at Thunder

reach as many riders as possible so we’re always looking for businesses who welcome our 2 & 3

uted new and used toys. On Reserve drill weekends during
October, November and December, Reserve Marines refur-
bished the used toys.
From Christmas 1980 through the present, Marines
have collected and distributed only new toys. Three fac-
tors dictated this change. First, the Secretary of Defense’s
Total Force Program, introduced in the 1970s, assigned
Reserves a greater role in America’s defense posture. As
a consequence, Reservists had to dedicate every minute
of weekend drill time to honing and polishing combat skills.
No time was available to refurbish toys. Second, public
awareness of the health and safety aspects of toys that
developed during the 70s made distribution of used toys
legally inadvisable. Third, distributing “hand me down” toys
does not send the message Marines want to send to needy
children. The goal is to deliver a message of hope, which
will build self-esteem and, in turn, motivate needy children
to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and
community leaders. A shiny new toy is the best means of
accomplishing this goal.

The first Va. Mooseriders were formed in December 2004.  We have suffered through the growing pains and organization
hurdles and grown to a respectable size.  We owe this growth to our member’s dedication to their fraternity and to the abil-

of supporting many Moose charities and lodge functions, not to mention community projects.  Our participation in these
community projects serves as a great opportunity to raise interest in our Fraternity as well as our Mooserider Committee.

DEMAND FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON XR1200 SPARKS AMERICAN DEBUT
Riders Order Hundreds of New Hot Rod Sportsters Before Official Release
MILWAUKEE (Dec. 1, 2008) - Inspired by the XR-750, the
most dominating American dirt track racing motorcycle of all-
time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost
adrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around the
world.
The XR1200 is a powerful new Harley-Davidson hot rod
motorcycle that was initially designed and launched only in
European markets in April 2008. With the high degree of
interest and passionate reception surrounding the bike’s Eu-
ropean release, as well as demand from Harley riders and
competitive brand owners alike, the XR1200 is now being
launched in all markets.
Drawing significant styling influences from the successful
Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycles that set new stan-
dards for dirt track racing success over the last 30 years,
the XR1200 features technical innovation to provide potent
street performance and handling. In fact, Harley-Davidson dirt track racing legends Scott Parker and Rich King partici-
pated in the XR1200 development.
“The XR1200 is an exciting motorcycle with an aggressive attitude,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice President,
Core Customer Marketing. “This bike will provide the performance and distinct style demanded by uncompromising riders.
In fact, hundreds of XR1200s were ordered by enthusiastic customers before we really even promoted it.”
The successful dirt track legacy continues today as Harley factory rider Kenny Coolbeth won his third straight AMA
Grand National Twins flat track championship on the XR-750 in 2008. While distinctive racing paint and graphics on the
XR1200 will catch the eye, Harley-Davidson racing tradition and influence are clearly evident in the bike’s key features,
design and style.
The 1200 cc Evolution V-Twin engine with its high 10.0:1 compression ratio, performance cams, downdraft fuel injection,
precision-cooled cylinder heads and large capacity oil cooler cranks out high torque. Rubber mounted to a new frame with
a cast aluminum swingarm, the engine delivers exhilarating performance and responsive handling with less vibration. A
unique upswept, high-volume 2-1-2 straight shot exhaust system includes dual mufflers and is finished in satin chrome.
A sport-tuned Showa® suspension with inverted 43 mm front forks and twin preload adjustable shocks combines with
lightweight black cast three-spoke wheels to make the XR1200 ride and corner with feeling. Specially designed Dunlop(R)
Qualifier D209 tires connect the rider to the road, while Nissin(R) four-piston large disc front brakes provide stopping
power.
Additional racing influences on the XR1200 include details like dirt track style bodywork, wide black low-rise handlebar,
a 29.2-inch seat height and aggressive riding position. Rearset foot pegs provide additional cornering clearance with a
39-degree lean angle. The compact instrument cluster combines a digital speedometer, white-faced tachometer, dual trip
meter and clock.
The XR1200 is available in Vivid Black, Mirage Orange Pearl and Pewter Denim colors. The Harley-Davidson hands
free Smart Security System is optional in North America. U.S MSRP is $10,799.

XR 1200 features and highlights:
