The Absence of Limitations

Sept 16 - 30, 2011 The Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society presented works from artists who were inspired by Paula Dickey as a teacher, friend, and mentor. Paula Dickey so often said:The enemy of art is the absence of limitations ... no limitations give you so much liberty, you dont push against something to solve it and be creative. The collaborative show brought together paintings and wonderful stories - truly a celebration of artistic success acheived through Paulas teaching and inspiration.

The Music of Summer...a fun time to Sketch

From Fairbanks to Homer, MUSIC resounds through our art
Sketching to music fills the heart and the sketchbook with memories. Let the music carry your pen across the page. Opportunities abound in Homer. July 28-29, the 33rd KBBI, Homer public radio station Concert on the Lawn, will fill the summer air with colorful performances, great music and local food vendors. Salmonstock is Aug 3 - 5 in Ninilchik. Pier One Theater and local bars and galleries announce shows in the local newspapers For artists Mike Murray and Mary Bee Kaufman, Homers concert scene is a must do, sketching while rockin to the cadence of local talent.

During the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in July, music and visual arts are in consort. Pens, paints and sketchbooks appear at concerts that resonated across the UAF campus throughout the day. Lunch Bites are a non-stop multiplicity of all things artistic. The challenge for me is to grasp a sense of content and cadence, from poetry laced with subtlety to rock of ages hollerin Gospel choirs. One of my favorites is Mike Stevens, one of Americas nest harmonica virtuosos, whether belting out the blues or telling the story of the passage of a single train in the night.(Marybee Kaufman)

You can never sketch Toulouse enough: In less than 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec created 737 canvases, 275 watercolors, 363 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings, some ceramic and stained glass work, and an unknown number of lost works (WikiP). Whew. He was an icon of the Post-Impressionists. He spent HOURS in the Moulin Rouge sketching the activities of the evening: the gregarious crowds, the dancers, a few on-lookers sitting quietly. Studying techniques of Japanese prints and his contemporaries, Toulouse-Lautrec is often remembered for creating dynamic commercial art posters for the singers and bistro owners that have influenced all printed works since. A silhouette would capture the essence of a specific individual. Shapes and designs were created through the simplicity of line and large areas of color. Drawing is a foundation to art..but the FUN part is to put it into practice. YOU TOO CAN SKETCH the human form in its environment! Try those loose, fast, intimate sketches of life, and discover the fundamental nature of the human form as you capture gesture and color.

Andy Sonneborn organizes two informal plein air paint outs each summer. Artists from around the state will gather in Seward during the second weekend of June, and in Homer during August. GALLERY UPDATE - the KBWS Corner at the FIREWEED GALLERY

FIRST FRIDAY Celebration of the Arts is held every month in Homer. If you have new watercolor work (or one that hasnt been displayed in a while) that you would like to have included in the KBWS corner of the Fireweed Gallery, please bring the paintings to the gallery by noon on the Monday before First Friday. If you have a painting currently on display that you do not want included next month, please remove it by that same time and date. As always be sure that the painting is displayed professionally with a clean mat and glass and has a wire hanger. Also be sure to complete the form for hanging giving name of the piece, price, and whether it is framed under glass (u/g) or under plexiglass (u/p) and enter it in the watercolor log book in the gallery. We do appreciate your assistance in this!

This year 11 members painted two wonderful collaboratives. Congratulatios to the artists Thank you to Picture Alaska which framed the piece, and oodles of thanks to the coordinators whose patience and dilligent skills continue to make this program feasilble.

Every first Saturday Michael Murray (left) and Renee Jahnke (2nd from right) put together 4 hour mini-workshops, programs with exciting new watercolor methods and techniques. Kudos to those two!!!!! Two of these programs incorporate art and the community: the KBWS Scholarship Program and the Bunnell Street Plate Painting Project, both which go towards supporting arts education

The Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society was formed to facilitate and promote watercolor arts. The society holds one general meeting and painting event per month to provide a platform for special programs focusing on watercolor and related issues. Membership is open to anyone interested in supporting watercolor arts. Membership dues are $20 and paid on annual basis.
