Impact Assessment on Cyclone Thane @ Cuddalore District Cuddalore is a coastal district in Tamilnadu State and it is 200 Kilometres from

Chennai, the State Capital. Cuddalore district has seven (7) Taluks viz, Cuddalore, Kurinjippadi, Panrutti, Chidambaram, Kattumanarkovil, Thittakudi and Virudhachalam respectively. In the recent Thane cyclone Cuddalore district is also badly affected. Even in the year 2004 Tsunami parts of Cuddalore district had borne the brunt. In discussion with Special Officer, Relief Measures 1. Fully affected areas in Cuddalore District are as follows a. Cuddalore b. Kurinjippadi c. Panrutti d. Chidambaram 2. Partly affected areas in Cuddalore District are as follows a. Kattumanarkovil b. Thittakudi c. Virudhachalam

Current Status of Cuddalore 1. Due to the heavy wind blow there was 100% power shut down in entire district and electricity board is working in war-footing to restore power. Few parts in Cuddalore are partly restored. 2. Damage assessment preliminary report: a. Loss of human lives 40 b. Loss of Cattle 280 c. Agriculture Land 2.37 Lakh Acres d. Damage of Houses - 3, 05, 680 (Partially & Fully) 3. The preliminary report states that, this disaster is worse than the 2004 Tsunami. 4. The entire agricultural farm land was completely destroyed. 5. The district saw huge turn outs of NGOs and corporate organisation lending their relief measures and support during Tsunami. Till now date there hasnt being single organisation who has rendered their help in rescue and restoration activates. 6. There are very few organisations which has supported in giving food packets, water and dry ration. 7. The entire district government is in huge set back, without proper distribution system and to support in relief and rescue operations. 8. The exact assessment of the damage would take minimum of 2 to 3 months. 9. At present, six senior IAS officers, 11 Deputy Collectors, 100 tahsildars and deputy tahsildars and 1,000 TNEB personnel are camping in Cuddalore district for relief works and to disburse compensation to the affected people. Government support and relief measures announced by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 1. Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned Rs 850 Crores for relief measures 2. Government has decided to give compensation of Rs 5000.00 for fully damaged houses and Rs 2500.00 for partly damaged houses respectively. 3. Government has decided to give compensation of Rs Two lakhs for the members of the families who lost their lives in Thane Cyclone. Photos:
