Achmad Dradjat, grew up in tegallega, West Java, during the 1960s. Tegallega was an area considered dangerous due to by the violences of the gangster, and he often found himself caught up in fights. with his weakness of having a small body, Drajat was an easy target for the violences there. Fed up with these humiliating beatings , Dradjat resolved to developing a system of self-defense that could be used fighting to opponents that physically stronger and larger than him. He identified four basic Physical elements begun within a fighting : punching, kicking, blocking/evasion and throwing/dropping. He did extensive weights training developing a muscular physique. he wasnt frills method focusing upon simple movements were done with maximum force coupled with a high endurance of physical pain. Applying his techniques in the street to defended himself or to protected other people who had been annoyed by Preman (Criminal /bad guy), and Dradjat getting a name for himself from people , he was commonly called as AA BOXER (aa similar meaning like Elder Brother, its from sunda/west Java language,and the name of BOXER was gotten in a film that well-known in the era), whilst initially reluctant to taught other people , more and more people came to him and asking to be taught. He formally established a self defense School, the school was named Perguruan Bela diri AA BOXER: DRADJAT Method in 1972 in Bandung City. At the time Dradjat was 24 years old. He did not consider his martial art to be related to Pentjak Silat, Karate or other martial art in any way. For him, it was a new martial art, created by his own experience of self defense. Like his motto: Transform yourself by yourself (Ina: Jadikanlah dirimu oleh diri sendiri). CHAPTER 2 THE PRESENT OF TARUNG DERAJAT : From Martial art to Branch of sport The name of Boxer was a past name of Tarung Derajat. However, that name is too western, contradiction with idealism as the people of Indonesia, Dradjat converts the name of AA BOXER that the name of martial art must be taken in Indonesia languange. Tarung Dradjat become a new name, Tarung means Fighting, Dradjat its taken from his name, Tarung Dradjat it means Achmad Dradjat fighting style for self defence. all Seniors members, spreading this new martial art, Growth and developing , and they are representative of Training Branch (Ina: SATLAT: Satuan Latihan) in stadium, university, military and other training branch place. The Hardness of full body contact martial art and practical style of self defence has been both it is main attraction for gaining more mainstream popularity in Indonesia Dradjat declares as Sang Guru (The Master of Tarung Dradjat) to members. Success to developing his own martial art, make him reflections in the journey of Tarung Dradjat, He doesnt want to be directly using his name at his own martial art, the reason is preventing him to become a Egoistic guy, he is rethinking to rename of Tarung Dradjat. Tarung Dradjat is transformed into a new name TARUNG DERAJAT, and the mean of Tarung Derajat's name has changed , Derajat means RANK OF HONOR.

Fight for self-defence .In year 1998, Tarung Derajat was recognized by KONI (Indonesia Mainstream Sporting Community).

KODRAT (Ina : Keluarga Olahraga Tarung Derajat) become official organization, and settle in 20 Province of Indonesia for beginning to introduces this new branch from tarung derajat. As a new sport in this era . The effort to creates a competitive style that has been conformed with KONI regulations presented major difficulties, especially in the terms of technique In effect the style must be reconfigured in a way that radically altered the social habits in which it had been developed.
