the new workplace

WOOlWORTHs suppORT OffICE NorWeST NSW

The evolution into one location aimed to connect all staff, centralise training facilities and create a workplace culture... together as one.

The Woolworths support Office is located in the new Norwest Business park, North Western sydney. The development, completed by Woodhead, includes masterplanning of the Greenfield site, three commercial buildings, 3-4 storeys in height totalling 36,000m2 of office space set out in a horizontal campus, all connected via a 2,500m2 central marketplace. The brief set by the client was to culturally unite the disparate support operations for the company, therefore providing one building for all people, yet still allowing for high levels of amenity, accessibility, comfort, and business efficiency in a human scale response whilst connecting all staff, centralising training facilities and creating a united workplace culture. The cultural statement of this consolidation process is evident in the built result where the office floorplates and marketplace encourage staff to communicate and interact, formally and informally. The masterplan evolved around the idea of public space and streets, with the central marketplace being the first element to take form. The hybrid-ventilated marketplace combined off-the-shelf components in an innovative fashion to achieve a cost effective and sustainable solution. The resulting greenhouse ratings achieved Australian industry bestpractice.

Externally the faade and form have been arranged to blend with the planted landscapescale of Australian Eucalypts, of which several hundred have been planted. stormwater is harvested from all office roofs and collected in one storage dam at the lower end of the site. This water is reticulated to particular landscaped zones for irrigation, with any overflow being diverted to the riparian zone on the eastern boundary.

providing architecture, interior design and graphic design services for this project as part of an integrated design solution, Woodheads design of the foxtel Customer solutions Centre provides worlds best practice, creating a healthy and comfortable working environment for over 1,000 employees. flexible team spaces on the three upper floors create a sense of place and space, where the design, graphics and TV screens reinforce the core entertainment nature of foxtels business. The innovative architectural features of this commercial call centre building offers a modern and efficient workplace, including internal flexibility for future tenancies and environmentally sensitive services. The building is orientated with its long axis to the east-west with a central atrium allowing for maximum natural light. The east and west faades remain largely blank to minimise the amount of solar gain. services, located at the ends of the central atrium, are individually expressed to add interest to the faades. The planning of the building is a very simple diagram, separating the main floor plate from the circulation and services. Circulation takes place at the edges with vertical circulation situated within the frames that enclose the central atrium. A basement carpark provides a formal base to the composition, which rises to three office levels. The ground floor plate incorporates amenities such as training rooms and a cafeteria.

The design creates a future workplace that co-locates personnel within a fully integrated and interactive team environment.

eco_scape explores the idea of the vertical metropolis and its integration into Chinese culture.

As the pressure to provide increased modern housing and commercial buildings intensifies around the globe, an increasing number of cities are looking at tall buildings as potential sustainable solutions. Eco_scape, is a research project exploring the design and construction of environmentally friendly tall buildings in Chinese cities. The project is a practice embedded, collaborative project devised by Woodhead in partnership with Arup, and Chinas Tonji university and Beijing university. The Eco_scape project aims to produce a dynamically responsive vertical village that can integrate into Chinese culture. It is designed to interact positively with the environment, reduce rather than increase carbon emissions and take advantage of free energy sources to provide comfortable and sustainable living and working spaces. Eco_scape seeks to produce a sustainable, site-specific tower that can be used as a benchmark for future projects. It will have to be virtually self sufficient, include power generation from wind turbine and photovoltaic solar cells, combined with low energy heating/cooling/ ventilation systems to produce maximum gain for users and minimum impact on the environment. using digital based modelling systems enabled exploration into areas such as wind design, structural efficiency and speed of construction, aesthetic impact on sunshade and shade, maximising human spaces at ground level. EsD initiatives are co-ordinated into the design from the outset aimed at a zero ecological footprint.

The entry is fronted by an impressive portal and glass canopy etched with a eucalypt leaf motif.

The $2.5 million refurbishment to the entrance and foyer of this previously nondescript 1980s building has transformed it into a welcoming and contemporary space, bringing the building into the new millennium. The impressive, but welcoming fully glazed double-height foyer is accessed from the street by a grand stairway and ramp. The entry is fronted by an imposing portal and glass canopy etched with a eucalypt leaf motif, providing dappled, modulated light for a comfortable transition to the interior. Deep red, clear and opague glass panelling is used on the foyer walls and columns to create colour and textural variety. The clear glass panels onto the street provide an abundance of natural light and a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. A retail element was added to the foyer with the introduction of a caf at the northern end, extending to an outdoor garden area and creates a pleasant meeting place for tenants and passers by. Glass panelling is a recurring feature internally and externally, reinforcing the interior/exterior connection. foyer uplighting provides a dramatic lighting effect with clean modern design lines.

Appropriate to the surrounding context yet retaining the distinct architectural form and identity of a corporate head office.

located on a prominent site, overlooking Hindmarsh square, the design of this premium grade, eight storey contemporary, minimalist style office building is appropriate to the surrounding context, yet retains the distinct architectural form and identity required for a corporate head office. The design expresses its green credentials via the arctic blue glazed veil forming a ventilated faade to moderate the heat load to the west-facing faade. The building form is derived from the grid pattern of the square and surrounding buildings and expressed in the north and south facades. Environmental performance was the main design consideration for the development achieving a 4 star AGBR rating and a 4 star Green star rating. As part of the environmental initiative, the air-conditioning system has been designed to operate independently on each floor with air handling units located inside a plant room area on each level. These enable the provision for capacity control to serve the functional and thermal zones throughout the building. All ductwork is acoustically and thermally insulated. Extensive life cycle costing studies were undertaken and the project complies with best practice in acoustics for office buildings. The exterior cladding features aluminium and CfC sheet cladding with the full height external sunscreen curtain wall system glazed with arctic blue glass. louvred grills and other sunscreening were produced in natural anodised aluminium.

The state Heritage listed former furniture warehouse has been adaptively reused for contemporary office, hospitality and retail functions. Woodheads scope included heritage assessment report, detailed conservation works, design of base building upgrade works over four levels and subsequent interior design to level 1 (Clemenger) and level 2 (MNet). Abandoned for decades, the building was restored through the removal of cumulative unsympathetic additions, conservation of remaining original features, and introduction of new compatible facilities to foster revitalisation of the building. New contemporary elements provide a meaningful and respectful contribution to the ongoing heritage of the building, enhancing its future use viability. The new entry incorporates a void cut through the building, enabling appreciation of the buildings unique floor to ceiling height and providing visual connection and interaction between floors. The exposed services solution has enabled all original Jarrah floors and ornate plaster ceilings to be retained, conserved and featured. The original grand staircase has been retained and enclosed in frameless glass, enabling individual floors to be secured. The adaptive reuse solution enables a variety of tenants to express their dynamic and creative culture whilst exploring the intangible benefits that heritage buildings bring to an occupants identity, image and work culture.

The ATO has leased two new builidngs in Civic to consolidate a number of their locations in Canberra and meet their stated objectives. Woodhead was comissioned for the interior design and workplace planning for 4200 staff, as an integrated interior design working with the architects commissioned for the buildings architecture. Designed to accommodate future change; the planning is robust and flexible, using urban planning principles that allow staff to move through the office spaces easily and comfortably. Notions of streets, lanes, interconnections and town squares drive the language and forms of the overall design, encouraging communication and interaction. Open workspaces are broken by communal parks creating an opportunity to meet informally in a green-scaped casual environment with urban timber seating. The concept of leaves and their changing colours, reflecting Canberras four distinct seasons, forms the basis for the graphics and colour palette, with overlaid signage and way-finding enabling staff to easily identify areas. The building configuration has a central core and four glazed facades allowing abundant natural light. The interior design approach maximises access to natural light and views providing an open plan environment. The concept uses the built environment to encourage interaction within the ATO by fostering productivity through creative planning techniques and intelligent design solutions.

The concept reflects the dynamic and creative nature of a design agency.

The creative new headquarters which is home to Clemengers 54 employees includes highly interactive and flexible work settings, spaced across 900m with further room for expansion. previously located on the outskirts of the city, its move into a more central area is reflective of Clemengers design aesthetic and contemporary approach to their projects. The open style format of the workplace begins at reception and flows directly into the work area, removing the divide between the two areas and allowing clients to see Clemengers work environment. The new space was designed to reflect Clemengers desire for a work space where the aspects of, and paths to, the creative process were on show rather than locked away. Creative zones are built throughout the space and one zone features a 4m long design bench with a roll of paper one end. paper can be stretched out allowing for impromptu individual or group creative sessions can take place. The work can then be cut off and hung on the wall for further creative input. An interactive clipboard also runs throughout the building, a rigging system of high tensile cables allowing designers to attach inspirational images, drawings and their design ideas to these cables where they are on display for all to take inspiration from. The design embraces the dynamic and creative aspects of the Clemenger culture and focuses on fun and the need to adapt to the environment as the advertising agencys projects and commissions demand.

The design process gave consideration to the structural grid and creating a clean internal perimeter.

This three-level 9,200m building, known as Alpha, is the first in the new perth Airport office park development, hkew. hkew Alpha is an innovative office building designed with the central core accommodating all services, entry lobby, meeting rooms and cafe and connected to two large open floor plates allowing maximum flexibility. The design process gave consideration to the structural grid creating a clean internal perimeter. Both floorplates are oriented to face 10 degrees to the north and south to give the building good passive solar performance which is enhanced by sunshading on the north facade. East and west facing facades have reduced fenestration protected by a dramatic perforated metal sunscreen. The cafe and meeting rooms open to a central landscaped courtyard, enhanced by a water feature and artworks. perth Airport occupies the 1,330m top floor of hkew Alpha. The key focus from the onset of this project was to achieve maximum efficiency of space with the client investigating many possibilities of open plan design. The conceptual design was established around colours associated with blue sky, yellow sun and the grey of the tarmac. This colour palette is reflected in the refined materials and finishes of the public areas, while bolder colours were used in the staff break-out areas. The final design outcome is to increase the communication and interaction in the 100% open plan office space, to ensure ultimate flexibility in the future.

The Woodhead designed offices for KpMG Adelaide accommodate more than 230 staff in a total office space of 3850m. A rigorous consultation process was undertaken with KpMG partners and staff to unlock the potential of their new workplace. The relocation was also used as an opportunity to reposition their brand in the Adelaide marketplace. fundamental to the design was access to natural light and views in all the community spaces and staff workstation areas. The colours, materials and finishes reflect the KpMG brand as well as highlight a local influence with the use of copper and locally sourced materials. The interior design features modular, flexible planning with glass partitioning, generous corridors, travertine floors to reflect light plus direct access to large balcony areas on the client level. The interiors are designed to reflect the outward looking, transparent and communicative values of the organisation whilst providing a more open work environment. The outcome focuses on a professional organisation. With an extensively open plan environment, 120 degree work settings for the individual are adaptable, responsive and team oriented. The result is an informal environment with the emphasis on teamwork rather than traditional structures. The flexible workstations are highlighted with shades of KpMGs living blue logo, including carpets, upholstery and glass tinting. WATER CORpORATION PerTH WA

Transparency and visibility is reinforced through the design, intended to promote a collaborative space.

The heart of the Water Corporation facility is the 24/7 concentric Control Room. The project objective was to provide a benchmark in control and operations centres, ensuring the planning outcome provided an innovative response to the notion of a control centre and the site constraints. The purpose of the space was to integrate geographically disparate sections of the water procurement and delivery process. fundamental to this was the successful integration of teams, enabling them to maintain their individual function whilst promoting better integration with their colleagues. The layout and spatial organisation needed to provide a solution to this specific objective resulting in a circular floor plan which provides a very practical solution from a functional perspective. Transparency and visibility is also reinforced through the design, intended to promote a collaborative space. selection of material and detail selection was driven by task and function. floor, wall and ceiling treatments were selected with consideration for acoustic attenuation. These materials also inform the aesthetic of the space. flexibility to reconfigure work groups was a detail principle to reduce future disruption and cost and enable the interior to adapt to change within the organisation over time. sustainability and resource consumption were key factors and influenced the underlying theme of the brief. All materials and equipment specified in the interior contract were considered from a sustainability perspective.

Invited to take part in a limited design competition for the design of a 10,000m commercial building, Woodhead was subsequently engaged to provide architectural design, documentation and construction services for this project. The integration of new entry levels in the base form and generous landscaping provide a welcoming approach for visitors. The curved and blade faade forms synthesise with the adjacent new development to create a cohesive urban environment. The orientation of the building to the north limits exposure to solar gain with predominately solid east and west facades. low sun angles are alleviated by the buildings curved form in conjunction with low e glass. An efficient building envelope was developed by undertaking studies of the most efficient floor plate area to faade area and assessing the distances between core and faade. Dark vertical mullions were used to minimise visual obstructions and low level perimeter sill maximises the internal light. Interior design flexibility was created by clean core walls and an assessment of the built form to provide a variety of modular design configurations.

The design reflects the organisations values and promotes a proactive, dynamic, successful and convivial business culture.

When the spirit-based company pernod Ricard merged with wine-makers Orlando Wyndham in 2005, the result was an integration of two distinct areas within the industry, namely the classic and the contemporary. Woodheads interior design of pernod Ricard pacifics new corporate office at North Ryde delivered an inviting and welcoming result whilst also reflecting the union of these industry opposites. With a tenancy located over three contiguous floors, the incorporation of a focal communication stair was one of the first design elements to be considered. planning the locations of the reception, main break-out areas and coffee bars across the three floors around this focal stair, allowed the stair to be fully used and encouraged staff communication and interaction. The clients brief was for the design to reflect the organisations values and promote a proactive, dynamic, successful and convivial business culture. A design concept was developed that would display warmth akin to stylish upmarket bars whilst reinforcing their corporate identity. With an overall area of 560,000m2, a building density of only 30%, a greenland ratio of 40%, the 900,000m2 architectural area is comfortably accommodated. The industrial units account for approximately 535,000m2, the Research & Development buildings 179,000m2 of the total and the service areas, which include six office towers, a hotel, executive staff accommodation and retail facilities equate to 178,000m2. The service facilities are designed to serve not only the commercial park but the entire region of songjiang. The extensive development will be constructed over five phases, each of which employ subtle design variations in colour, theme and detail overlaid on a consistent design approach to add an element of diversity to the overall design. The masterplan, while clearly reflecting an extremely efficient approach to planning the vehicular circulation systems on the site, immediately speaks of the balance achieved between industrial and business functions and the lifestyle components to the design.

The buildings and landscape are designed to reflect the same balance in design sensibilities. All of the buildings on the site have layered facades that conceal the air conditioning units and provide depth and shading to the facades. Glass and aluminium panels fill the space on the facade composition around the floating main wall panels. Caohejings trademark rich yellow colour is applied to some of the most prominent walls, providing a sense of unity throughout the park. A number of appropriate environmentally sustainable techniques and devices have been integrated into the site planning and building designs. The masterplan and landscape design incorporates efficient irrigation and waste water management systems, permeable paving, and efficient lighting for public and circulation spaces on the site. singapores Changi International Airport is regarded as one of the worlds most popular airports. The project philosophy for the terminal was to create a memorable airport experience, capturing the singaporean sense of place and reinforcing its user friendliness and amenity. The interior design of the new s$1.8 billion Terminal 3 is calming and spacious and based around a 21st century airport model, reflecting the airports economic importance along with a civic focus for the city and region. The terminal adopts an intuitive layout concept promoting ease of orientation. four guiding design principles were suggested by Woodhead and adopted by the Civil Aviation Authority of singapore (CAAs) namely; clarity, natural lighting, external views and maintainability. The terminal is divided into two distinct sections: landside being accessible to the public and airside being areas accessible only to travelling passengers. The 380,000m project accommodates over 100 retail and 30 food and beverage outlets and is used by over 22 million passengers each year, bringing the total capacity of Changi airport to 70 million passengers per annum. A key highlight of Terminal 3 is the five-storey high vertical garden, the Green Wall, spanning 300m across the main building and viewable from both the Departure and Arrival Halls. The $20 million upgrade of sydney Airports Domestic Terminal 2 focused upon enhancing the current retail, food and beverage offer. Woodheads masterplan reorganises the vertical circulation points and passenger flows to better integrate with the retail offer. Escalators have been relocated so that passengers move through the retail precinct en route to lounges and concourse areas, strategically increasing footfall and consequently leading to improved revenue potential by the retail area. The retail precinct comprises a combination of shops, food and beverage and seating, encouraging travellers to extend their time in the retail zone. This increases passenger spending and the retail experience. The changes to the retail configuration have prompted a rethink of the security zone, which has been reinforced. The masterplan also incorporates a proposed airside extension to the building in order to cater for projected passenger demand. Terminal 2 is sydney Airports busiest terminal, handling over 10 million passengers a year. The redevelopment has provided passengers with improved facilities, additional retail outlets, new floor surfaces, more effective signage and an abundance of natural light, making the whole journey a memorable and pleasurable one.

The reconfiguration and expansion of the new East Hall Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport was designed to add retail value and an improved passenger experience to the existing shell. The responding design concepts by Woodhead aimed to transform the terminals East Hall precinct into an integrated environment supporting a diversity of passenger services and amenities. The project added an additional 9,000m2 of commercial space which was introduced by two identical double level extensions to the East Halls diagonal facades. The design concept introduced a sense of place for Hong Kong, a vibrant and energetic world city, while respecting the integrity of the terminals existing architecture. The concept is supported by stylised lanterns which reflect the famous views along Nathan Road Kowloon and offer a similar function by creating a backdrop for integrated advertising and retail signage. The design responded to the airports need to ensure that the retail space is conducive to generating revenue. The masterplan design curbed the primary passenger flows and increased their dwell time within the retail environment. The materplan was centred around an internal communal piazza space serviced by restaurants, retail and passenger amenities over two levels. The primary vertical circulation post security was solved to drop passengers into the newly engineered central space. The expansion and retail works harmonise with the airports dynamic structure, invigorating the unique space.

...the design solution provides an open, flexible and expandable terminal...

The Hervey Bay International Airport celebrates the sun, the breeze, and the lifestyle unique to this popular holiday destination, as the facility provides a place of welcome for visitors seeking to discover the culture and natural beauty of the fraser Coast. A five fold increase in passenger numbers was incorporated into the airports expansion whilst integrating the structure of the pre-existing terminal and capitalising on the central location of the existing aircraft apron and landside car park. The brand identity of the airport was the key consideration in the design and theming of the terminal to ensure passengers are greeted with a sense of place. This was achieved by creating a relaxed, open plan terminal with expansive views and use of natural light, and introducing vibrant colours internally through the selection of fabrics, fixtures and finishes. Kinetic forms, reflected in a plane wing aerofoil and the hydrofoil of a breaking wave, are expressed in the buildings roof form to strengthen the connection between the air and sea. Woodheads design solution provides an open, flexible and expandable terminal, with strategically located infrastructure, such as check-in areas and baggage handling which are easily expandable in the future. The simple but iconic building is well regarded by both locals and tourists alike.

ADElAIDE CENTRAl Bus sTATION FrANKlIN STreeT, ADelAIDe SA
The Adelaide Central Bus station, designed by Woodhead in association with Denton Corker Marshall, is the culmination of four years of masterplanning and design. This new station is a quantum leap in quality from the old bus station and provides travellers with modern facilities, and sets the standard for terminal design in Australia. The design strove to provide an architectural land mark offering an immediate sense of place and orientation to the traveller, and an environment that is light, airy, welcoming with a certain sensory impact. The bus stations distinctive Mandarin Orange palette references its location, in the environs of Adelaides lively Chinatown. The strong colour also reinforces the pedestrian access to the terminal from Grote street. A series of aluminum grids make up part of the bus station facades - these create a contemporary imagery that is drawn from its transportation based uses bus station and car parking. These curved and folded aluminum arcs are perforated, creating visual interest and emphasising the best features of both old and new transport facilities. The curved canopies on the street frontages project out from the line of the glazing offering a degree of protection for pedestrians and continuing the notion of the verandah. In addition to the bus station the project provides 550 car parks over five levels and 39 residential units. The bus station will be home to 15 coaches and approximately 300,000 people per year will pass through its doors on both interstate and intrastate travel.

Constructed in 1883, the sturt street school served the southwest corner of Adelaide for over 100 years until its closure in 1996. Disused for over ten years and in a very poor state of dilapidation, the project has seen the conservation and adaptive reuse of the original building to create the first integrated early learning centre in Adelaide. The centre provides childcare, preschool and infants school facilities in the one building. The altered internal spaces of the existing building were returned to their original layout by removing the internal walls, opening up the space and creating more flexibility within the classrooms. New buildings containing access, services and amenities blocks are located on the back of the existing building. The buildings are separated by light weight glazed links, allowing the historic building fabric to retain its identity and integrity while maximising the penetration of natural daylight. The proportions of the new buildings were designed to reduce the imposing scale of the existing Victorian structure and are more colourful to better integrate with the childrens outdoor play areas. The centre of the building has been opened up and features a new contemporary stair, letting in daylight and acting as a principal axis point from the main entrance through to the outdoor playing area at the rear of the building.

The project incorporates an exhibition foyer, moot court, computer labs, teaching spaces, function rooms, administration and support areas. The double height feature wall frames the main visitor approach to the building and forms the spine for the internal layout. The wall contains an internal foyer space, providing both signage and exhibition opportunities. The ceiling and walls have been sculpted over the mezzanine level to access the northern aspect and wash natural light down into the foyer. The moot court dominates the main approach path with visual interest achieved both during day and night with the articulation of the faade and utilisation of large glazed panels. The moot court plan was developed around the radial concept for courtrooms, ensuring that visual connections between judge, associates and jury are maintained throughout proceedings. The integration of Environmentally sustainable Design initiatives were critical to the success of the project. These initiatives were evaluated for their capital cost, payback period, energy savings and value to the project and included night purging and economy cycles throughout the building, air quality and temperature sensing coordinated with the levels of natural ventilation, as well as coordination with the campus chilled water facility for cooling the air. The building has been applauded by academic teaching staff for its flexibility, ambiance and the state-of-the-art technology which enhances the teaching and learning experience.

The theatre was designed according to a very strict brief where it had to be instantly recognisable from other buildings on the campus and play a central role in connecting students with the nearby library and harmonising with the existing built form of the campus. The distinctive shape of the building was derived from detailed studies into acoustics. The internal space of the lecture theatre was sculpted to optimise natural voice amplification. The Visitor Centre in Karijini National park in the remote pilbara is set in one of Australias most extraordinary landscapes. The building is well integrated into the landscape and its form is confident in engaging with the inherent strength of the landscape. The project brief was to create a building for the interpretation of the park, its geology, flora, fauna, people and history. The cultural symbol chosen by the aboriginal stakeholders for the form of the building is a Kurrumanthu (goanna/ lizard). The objectives of the building design are to represent, through the built form, respect for the objectives and preoccupations of the aboriginal stakeholders and to stimulate interest in a reappraisal of our collective past, place in the landscape and relationship between aboriginal and non aboriginal people. The building is defined by an assembled collection of freestanding overlapping weathered steel wall panels which emerge directly from the red brown earth and are arranged in plan to provide an abstract representation of the Kurrumanthu acceptable to the aboriginal stakeholders. Entry into the building is through glass doors set between two of the steel wall panels. Once inside, large frameless glass windows draw the visitor back into an unalienated landscape at every turn. The design result is an ambiguous form that is absorbed by the landscape and open to interpretation on a number of levels.

The ritual burning of the pinnacles Interpretive Centre, as part of its design and building process underscores the unique role of fire, both culturally and environmentally, in Australia. This evocative gesture by Woodhead introduces this specific practice into contemporary Australian architecture. The burning and the burnt remains are integral to the scheme and highlight the relationship between fire, the land and its inhabitants. located 250km north of perth in the Nambung National park, the pinnacles are made of thousands of protruding limestone formations spread over a vast dunal landscape, a dynamic and ever changing landscape. The design principle for the centre is embedded in the mutable narrative of that landscape. The material language for the scheme fits into its environment, becoming just another part of the background to the desert and are specifically of the place with the podium walls constructed in limestone and timbers used are direct references to the nearby grove of vanishing tuarts, disappearing under a shifting sand dune and the planting interventions involve species endemic to the region. The vertical timber elements, which are a figurative reference to the heath shrub in the area, were deliberately set on fire enabling the architecture to become a registration of the role of fire in the landscape, as well as an acceptance of a different kind of future; one which willingly accepts loss and change and highlights humanitys vulnerable position in global balance. The pinnacles Interpretive Centre marks a shift in architectural response to landscape, as an understanding place.

The Interpretive Centre is consciously contradictory, non-heroic and embedded into a series of larger scale narratives about landscape, place and relationship.

The building is at once an alien presence in the townscape yet so deeply embedded it provides the necessary impetus for the redefinition of the town.

The shark Bay Interpretive Centre was designed for the local authority to introduce visitors from all over the world to the history, culture and world heritage values of shark Bay. Designed by Woodhead in collaboration with exhibition designers, freeman Ryan Design, the interpretive centre is a collection of simple concrete boxes wrapped in a veneer of polished concrete , titanium zinc, copper and glass set on a podium some 800mm above street level.

The concrete boxes speak to expediency with the front most box tilted and twisted to register the force and direction of the prevailing wind. The thick polished concrete wall at the front of the building speaks to the enduring monumental impulse of architecture while the titanium zinc cladding copper fascia and pewter building sign register and celebrate the inevitability of change. The enduring architecture acknowledges and celebrates the elemental forces of wind wave and salt and speaks to continuity in the context of a largely transient population and culture of expediency. A building which is at once an alien presence in the townscape and yet so deeply embedded it provides the necessary impetus for the redefinition of the town. With the completion of the interpretive centre and exhibition gallery, the small fishing community of Denham has redefined itself as the tourist centre for the shark Bay World Heritage Area, with a building design which explores the physical, historical and social context to develop a new identity for the town.

The design philosophy is centred around the idea of connections.

Knowledge has become the cornerstone of success in todays competitive environment. The brief for the new singapore National library was to advance the development and well-being of singapore and its people in the knowledge economy through convenient access to information. The design philosophy is centred around the idea of connections. Connection of the user to the library and knowledge. Connection of the library to the community as a whole. Connection of the various elements of the building to each other and ultimately, connection of the National library and singapore to the world. Encompassing all these ideas is nexus, which describes the design philosophy for the project. This is encapsulated in the sevenstorey book wall running through the core of the building. The book wall is constructed from aluminium and glass, and acts as a division between front of house and back of house. Other elements of the interior design include multi-coloured lED lighting and a rare books library, designed to meet the requirements of keeping the area dark and cool with low humidity. The gallery represents a summary of the achievements of Aboriginal Australia, arising from the challenges posed by the country itself. The east wing of the heritage listed museum building was renovated to create extra gallery space for the Aboriginal Cultures exhibition. The building work included new lifts, building services, and the addition of an earthquake resisting structure. A high level of technical resolution was required to meet Building Code of Australia Disability Discrimination Access requirements and services needs. A new glazed entrance structure was designed to house the museum shop, caf and orientation centre, whilst maintaining views of the heritage facades. Careful detailing and use of materials has created a vibrant and luminous public space within a restricted site. Murray Bridge sandstone blocks matching the east wing were salvaged from a 1960s addition for reuse in the new entrance structure walls and the floor is paved with Mintaro slate. healing comfort
THE VARIETy CHIlDRENs CENTRE, flINDERs MEDICAl CENTRE ADelAIDe SA
The flinders Medical Centre paediatric Ward was redeveloped as the inpatient component of The Variety Childrens Centre at flinders Medical Centre. This $2.75 million design saw Woodhead architects, interior designers and graphic designers working collaboratively with ward staff to develop an exciting interior concept entitled - @ the beach - as a complementary interior design to that of the adjacent outback themed paediatric Outpatient Clinics. Extensive consultations with staff, parents and children ensured that the ward is a place of healing and comfort, and that all age groups can connect with it at some level. The ward also needed to be highly functional, provide adequate light as well as serve the needs of hospital staff and parents in what are often highly stressful situations. The @ the beach theme posed a number of interesting challenges to designers as the ward had to be engaging, attractive and functional to both patients and their parents. Well thought out graphics were the key to making the ward children and family friendly; appealing and reassuring to younger children, yet sophisticated enough to complement a suitable environment for older children. The under-sea images were also selected to assist children younger than reading age to recognise their room in the ward. The unique underwater photographic graphics applied to the glazed patient room doors had to allow low level vision for toddlers and higher level view through to approaching staff, yet still afford a reasonable degree of privacy to older children.

The redevelopment provides a fresh, new environment for children and adolescents at Flinders Medical Centre.

The queen Elizabeth Hospital (TqEH) is one of the major hospital facilities of the North Western Adelaide Health service (NWAHs). Built in the 1950s, TqEH required urgent redevelopment to meet the revised service delivery framework definition and to ensure recurrent operating efficiencies could be made. Woodheads masterplan study helped to identify the preferred option for the development. A new build option, with the retention of some existing facilities, allowed the construction of a three storey hospital containing all of the functional patient care requirements in a tight, efficient and totally modern facility. Effective zoning of outpatients, diagnostic and treatment, inpatient and hotel services is achieved creating optimum levels of efficiency, long term flexibility, minimum operational cost and maximum patient focus. The design philosphy that formed the driving force of this project was more than just functional efficiency. Woodhead envisioned a hospital on a human scale, one that would facilitate interactions between natural and built components. Consequently, each of the wards on the ground floor were designed to enjoy the open vistas of the hospital gardens without disturbing patient privacy. The many and varied gardens play an integral part in the healing process, with private gardens being specifically designed to engender positive emotional responses in patients, their visitors and hospital staff.

Design recognises that indigenous people, long term residents and recent migrants will see and use environments in very different ways.

flynn lodge is located at Old Timers on the stuart Highway. It provides a home for 20 frail, older people and gives 10 of these residents an opportunity to live in a dementia specific facility. flynn lodge has been designed to focus on what people are able to do rather than on what they can no longer do. The facility is designed as two clusters of ten independent living units, reflecting peoples desire to live as neighbours rather than family. large doors provide a direct link to camp fires and there are several entrance points offering outside views. The design recognises that traditional indigenous people, urban indigenous people, long term residents and recent migrants will see and use environments in very different ways. Flynn Lodge would not have been possible without Woodhead. All we had was a vision of what was needed. Woodhead was able to grasp that vision and turn it into a reality, through extensive and careful consultation with the many stakeholders in the local community and wonderful creativity. Rev. Access to natural lighting, cross ventilation and water conservation are some of the strategies utilised, minimising the impact on the environment.

located on a greenfield site, st Vincent de paul, Geelong is a single storey 91 bed aged care facility comprising four buildings. Three of the four separate buildings accommodate residents, the remaining one houses administrative functions. The buildings are designed to a more domestic size lessening the institutional look and feel. The accommodation buildings are positioned around the administration building in a way that is sympathetic to the site conditions, while providing an effective planning solution. Housing around 30 residents in each building produces efficient economies of scale, thus reducing the amount of servicing required. This layout brings the administration building into the centre of the site and internalises all servicing while providing more of a residential frontage to the streetscape. A gradual procession from public areas through to private spaces has also been incorporated into the overall scheme. Access to natural lighting, cross ventilation and water conservation are some of the strategies that have been utilised, delivering higher levels of user comfort, better indoor air quality whilst minimising the impact on the environment. Water saving measures were also implemented, which look at water use and reuse.

the jewel of india

CHANDIGARH MIxED-usE DEVElOpMENT INDIA
The masterplanning and development of this 8.5 hectare brownfield site on the outskirts of Chandigarh, Northern India takes on the theme and expression of the jewel and shard. Appointed as masterplanner and architect, Woodheads design for the mixed-use development includes retail, commercial and a six star hotel. The architectural language of the retail component is that of angular, tapered and metallic forms, reflecting the shard-like nature and multi-facets of a precious stone. The skylight emerges from the solid mass of the roof form, like a precious stone breaking through the earth, a theme reinforced by the entrance water feature. The architectural form of the commercial building expresses the jewel and shard through a large scale curtain-glass wall which reflects and defracts natural light. folded metal ceiling forms, to the ground level soffit, creates a multi-dimensional and dynamic surface which is animated with lighting effects and reflections of the ground plane and activity below. The hotel building takes on a more traditional dimension with relatively simple geometric forms and materiality. The sculptural roof form, to the ballroom, reflects the folded, wing-like faade form of the retail building. The focal point of the development is the centre stage. This public domain connects all of the developments and provides a central meeting place and space for social interaction. This will be the first development of its kind in Northern India and will be a quantum leap forward for Chandigarh, a city made famous by the town planning of le Corbusier.

The shenfu flow City is to be located between the cities of shenyang and fushun in Northeast China. The strategic urban planning and design competition for the 556km2 area between these two cities was done in collaboration with the urban planning team from Tongji university to further develop Woodheads linear city model and then apply the concepts to the shenfu area. Overlaid on the base environmentally sustainable linear model were elements from a number of other planning models, principals of farming and industrial cyclic economies, a research and development focus and a culturally sustainable urban laboratory as the citys core area. The urban planning is based on the principals of flow, energy and synergy. flow refers to the flow of people, goods, information and capital. The flow energy is derived from an efficient transportation network, an effective financial system, low-waste power, water, material supply, lowemission trash, waste water, waste gas management, and an ecological infrastructure that promotes bio-diversity. The strategic coordination of a citys flow energy derived from its infrastructure, dynamic energy from its economic systems, competitive energy from its human capital, and synergy from its policies, propel the sustainable development of its economy, environment and society. Biological and anatomical structures have influenced the form and planning of the overall concept. This limited design competition, won by Woodhead, was for a new central business district and water park on a 6km2 site in shaoxing. Key to the success of this scheme was the collaborative design approach and genuine engagement with the shaoxing community to generate the conceptual direction. Working with the shaoxing leadership and prominent local artists, the design was able to capture some of the cultural spirit of shaoxing and reinterpret the resultant forms and patterns into a contemporary urban planning and architectural response. The conceptual foundation and overall layout of the scheme was established using a specially commissioned painting by Tian yiping, Artist and president of the Zhejiang Arts Association. A calligraphy artist provided a series of characters from legends particular to shaoxing. The intense collaborative process ensured that the approach to the planning of the new CBD in shaoxing was intrinsically linked to and driven by the shaoxing community. The patterns, proportions and overall forms used in the planning, and then in the architectural concepts, were all derived from the site, history and local culture. The design attempts to effect a process that allows a natural evolution of the growth of shaoxing, in spite of the rapid pace of development, from an ancient town into an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable contemporary city that facilitates modern life.

Collaboration with internationally acclaimed french interior designer Andree putman for the design of the lobby, pool and day spa areas created an elegant and modern feel. The apartment interiors are simple and timeless incorporating high quality natural stones and designer fittings. The design of each level of the 10 storey building focused primarily on orientation to the expansive views to the city and Adelaide Hills. Apartments themselves were designed to provide for two clearly separate zones of bedrooms either side of large open plan living, dining and kitchen areas directly connected to balconies. The building design is based on the original 1960s structural grid with both the new and the old structures being expressed in the facades. particular attention was paid to the incorporation of a human scale base to the building. This took the form of a strong horizontal podium in charcoal coloured pre-cast concrete, with a texture that makes reference to the bluestone character prevalent in the locality. place on Brougham provided a unique opportunity to convert a tired under-utilised hotel into a highly prestigious apartment building that has become one of Adelaides best addresses.

KENT TOWN BREWERy ApARTMENTs KeNT ToWN SA
One of Adelaides first breweries, Kent Town remains one of the few intact examples of industrial architecture of the late 1800s and one of only three remaining historic breweries in Adelaide. The restoration of the former brewery (circa 1876) in Rundle street is being hailed as a prime example of the conservation and development possibilities of our often overlooked culturally significant industrial sites. The original buildings have been transformed into 25 residential apartments with a lap pool, gymnasium and basement parking. A variety of apartment types have been formed to suit the original building layout and to appeal to a wider market. Restoration works included the repointing of the bluestone walls and the reinforcing of the original roof structure. New openings in wall structures maintain the rhythm and proportion of the original fenestrations and are deliberately detailed to be readily recognisable as modern insertions. Modern materials used on balconies, external stairs and oversize planter boxes provide an effective contrast, enhancing the original heritage fabric. The use of glass, mild steel, stainless steel and hardwood timbers also work towards achieving a blending of contemporary expression reflecting the sites industrial theme. A new multi-storey modern tower is situated within the heritage courtyard. This was necessary to create a financially viable adaptive reuse proposal for the site. Through its similar scale and form, the tower provides some physical connection with the former Malthouse silos.

The Animation City Retail Centre in Guangzhou is a prime example of how a creative analysis of the market, with the client, can create a unique product. Woodheads innovative design has captured the market theme of the exciting animation industry and the spirit of youth in the 21st century. The brief was to design a new retail centre of 25,000m2 on three basement levels with entries at each level from the front park metro station. The animation theme emerged as a set of new marketing concepts which were then transformed into a lively, vibrant and dynamic aesthetic. Entry to the Retail Centre from above is through two sunken areas 60 metres apart at each end of the plaza. The escalators and flat glass roofs are part of the original Metro design, but the addition of organic steel mesh canopies and sails over the top extend the vibrant theme and draw people down through the three level atrium spaces at each end of the centre. The sails stretching between the glass roof and the frame are designed to filter and shade direct sunlight, emulating leaves in the canopy of a tree. At night time, the sails and structure of the canopy are lit with changing colours to provide exciting and dynamic focal points in the plaza and with the urban context. The design layout encourages shoppers to congregate at the central core of the centre where the comic and animation culture is most prolific.
