Caly Networks Innovative Wireless switched MESH Topology Network

Patents developed by Caly Networks, Filed (1998-2002)

Background:

Founded in late 1988, Caly Networks invented the first (and the only to this day) wireless
mesh network based on spatial electronic beam steering for switching packets among
distributed wireless routers.

To implement multi megabit packet by packet wireless routing system, Caly designed a
novel (less than 20ns) electronic beam steering antenna, unique high speed multi QAM
Burst Modem chip and a novel MAC (Media Access Control) layer –called STSMA
which was implemented as an ASIC.

The synchronized wireless routers were capable of switching and routing packets using
QOS (Quality Of Service) at rates of hundreds of Megabits on each of the MESH internal
links.

The system operated at a TDD (Time Division Duplex). The transceivers were capable of
frequency hopping in less than 100ns over a 1GHz range between 20 channels of 50MHz
BW each, at the LMDS 28-29GHz.

The main advantage of Caly’s switched MESH network architecture is its ability to
deliver multi Gigabit of IP information at the same area, on only few Tens of Megahertz
of bandwidth, using its spatial switching capability.

The system was operated at the LMDS 28-29GHz band. A 5.8 GHz system was also built.

Caly’s Patents and Patent Applications covering wireless switched Mesh

technologies are listed below.
