EU SUSTAINABLE ENERGY WEEK BRUSSELS EVENTS PROGRAMME

Dear Participant,
I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending EU Sustainable Energy Week. This prestigious event is in its seventh edition. It has become the key annual event in Europe to stress how crucial it is for our economies and societies to move towards renewable and efficient forms of energy, and to discuss the way ahead together. The European Union has set itself ambitious energy and climate change targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels. Policy discussions, events and practical demonstrations not just in Brussels, but across Europe during Sustainable Energy Week will illustrate how we can all contribute to reaching our Europe 2020 strategy goals. The core of the Week is a high-level policy conference in Brussels, expected to draw an audience of at least 4 000 people over three days. It will examine in detail the EUs renewable energy strategy and present practical examples of the financial opportunities available, including a speed dating session. Special attention will be given to the development of sustainable energy in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Mediterranean and to our cities and regions. The rich agenda includes advice on how small businesses and households can make their own contributions to our collective effort. Alongside the conference, there will be a number of interesting events in Brussels. These range from exhibitions and open-door days to workshops and guided tours. EU Sustainable Energy Week is not exclusive to Brussels. It is an inclusive platform for hundreds of local Energy Days throughout the Union. These will demonstrate the benefits of energy efficiency and renewable resources to an estimated 150 000 people across Europe. In addition, on 19 June, I will announce the winners of this years edition of the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards in five categories: communicating, consuming, learning, living and travelling. They will come from 25 projects that have been shortlisted from the 262 applications we received. Moreover, one award given by the ManagEnergy initiative will reward best practice in local and regional energy action. The winners will be showcased as examples of sustainable energy excellence and Im confident will stimulate further innovative ideas. I would like to thank you for coming to EU Sustainable Energy Week. I am convinced you will have a rewarding and stimulating time and learn a lot, both professionally and personally. Yours sincerely,

Gnther Oettinger EU Commissioner for Energy

Sustainable Energy Europe Awards 2012

Launched in 2006, the European Commissions Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE) Awards recognise outstanding renewable energy or energy-efficient projects in Europe. With more than 1 200 project promoters from across the 27 EU Member States, as well as non-EU countries, the Awards has established a strong network of implementing bodies throughout its previous six editions. Some 262 projects were submitted for this years Awards, and 25 initiatives were shortlisted for one of the following five categories: Communicating, Consuming, Learning, Living and Travelling. The initiatives come from 14 different EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and the United Kingdom), in addition to a number of projects managed by pan-European partnerships. The five overall winners, selected by a high-level jury, will be announced during the prestigious SEE Awards ceremony in the presence of the EU Commissioner for Energy, Gnther H. Oettinger. Open to invited guests, the event takes place in Brussels on 19 June. For the first time, this year the ceremony will also host the annual Managenergy Local Energy Action Award.

The ManagEnergy Local Energy Action Award is presented every year to projects that trigger sustainable energy actions at the local and regional level. For the 2012 round of the award competition, ManagEnergy received a record 64 projects from 23 countries, covering a wide range of energy efficiency and renewable energy topics. The three finalists were selected by a high-level jury composed of key actors representing public authorities, energy agencies, city networks, and industry and citizens associations from across Europe. The rigorous evaluation procedure considered the projects impact, sustainability and replication potential. The 2012 ManagEnergy Local Energy Action Award finalists are:

Community Power Cornwall, a co-operative developed by Community Energy Plus, an award-winning
