The Eastland Golden Cow family

Golden Opportunities..
It was the Dutch Etazon program that first introduced the US Latuch Laurie Golden family to Europe and at Eastland Holsteins, the Netherlands, the family achieved their first big European successes. Now spread across the globe this family is as alive and kicking as ever and is offering many breeders and sire analysts great satisfaction. The Goldens offer lots of opportunities ready for you to harvest!
animals contracted and several high genomic young females that often trace back to the Aerostar Linda VG-87 cow, a great granddaughter of a Wayne sister to the Nugget. However, right there in the late eighties, the Dutch decided to purchase Penstate Lauras VG-85 Nugget daughter. This proved to be a great decision: her Cleitus embryos got it all started in the Netherlands as the resulting female out performed anything else in the Eastland herd in Holland!

Latuch Brothers, Pennsylvania, US

The Goldens originate from a deep cow family at Latuch Farm in Rockwood, Pennsylvania, USA. Brothers Roger and Dave Latuch developed this L family for years and with the arrival of a Nugget x Penstate daughter, Latuch Laurie Golden VG-85 , the European sire analysts found their way to this breeder herd. The Etazon program, managed at the time by Jacob Chardon, wanted to work with high % protein Nuggets and the Latuch family has also marketed a number of bulls to Japan from this L line. Latuch Lexus and Latuch Blackstar Samson have done well for HLIA and Genetics Hokkaido respectively. Today the branches from the same EX-92 Penstate daughter produce high g TPIs. Latuch Freddie Lewis at Genex -CRI is at 2287 gTPI and is 10 generations away from a dominant Wayne, a maternal sister to the Nugget. And Latuch Garrett Laramie, he is 2360 gTPI at ABS Global. Roger Latuch says: We have done ET and selective matings for over 25 years on the family and it has paid off. We now have 30+

Goldens luck
The somewhat older readers of this article will recognize that the nineties can be seen as an era in which speed, through shortening the generation interval and use of young sires, was one of the most common features in progressive Holstein breeding programs. It was also recognized that the highest indexing females resulting from US and Canadian embryo imports should be used intensively and at a young age. Often, this rush has not brought much. Indexes often had lower reliability levels and were not as complete as they are today. The L family at Eastland however has been able to handle the pressure because the Cleitus Golden heifer was lucky enough to be flushed to two of the breeds greats as a virgin: Skalsumer Sunny Boy and To-Mar Blackstar!

Sunny Boy and Cash

When Eastland Golden came into heat as a virgin, the Oosterink brothers of Eastland Holsteins, straight away started using Sunny Boy, the brand new nr. 1 bull in Holland. When the bull calf Eastland Cash was born in February 1991 they thought his full brother, by the name of Casino, was a much better bull. However it was Cash that became the moneymaker for owner CRV. Casino never got any further then

Cash is the bull with most 100.000 kg + cows in Holland

his initial group of test daughters but Cash now has an unbelievable 172.500 daughters in his proof. Over 55.000 daughters are milking abroad, from which 21.000 are housed in the UK and Ireland alone. Eric Elbers from CRV confirms that CRV sold 1.2 million straws of semen of which over one third were exported to 49 different countries. Breeders expecting high type were disappointed, breeders that needed trouble free and long lasting cows were happy and wanted more of these Dutch genetics. Cash his daughters did proved to be very durable. He tops the lists of sires with NL daughters over 100.000kgM. Both in 2010 and 2011. And at Eastland, Cleitus Golden VG-88 herself lived up to the age of 16 yrs!

land Golden VG-88 was also bred to him as a virgin and the resulting calf, Eastland Gala, was a fantastic individual. Very much a Blackstar type wise with the production that was so typical of the cow family, Eastland Gala classified EX-90 and she was bred to many bulls that topped the charts in the nineties. Amongst them was Etazon Laudia

Lexus. The resulting bull, Eastland Figaro EX-94, became one of the first sales toppers for Cogent UK . Eastland Glenda VG-86 by Mascot was born from her maiden heifer flush and in turn flushed as a maiden to Etazon Celsius. The resulting bull, Eastland Festival, was a phenomenon production wise. However, his type pattern was weak, and did not meet the international market demands. As a first calver Glenda VG-86 was flushed to Lord Lily. That mating doubled up on Blackstar and DID work. The resulting heifer, Molenvliet Glenda VG87, was a BIG hit!

daughters by different bulls. In South Africa Spock embryos from her VG-85 Holim Boudewijn daughter produced an EX cow. Today this Spock daughter is the dam of one of the most interesting new young proven sires in that country named Taranaki, by Goldwyn and his full sister classified VG-88 in the herd of Mr Boet Reinecke. Delta Herald embryos were also marketed and Alta Genetics in Holland tested a great VG-87 Herald daughter from her. From the Herald a VG-87 Timlynn Adam daughter was born in the herd of TerBeek Holsteins and this Adam is one of the all-time favorites of Frans-Jan and Sascha

ter Beek, in Muiden, the Netherlands. When Glenda was mated to breed greats like Shottle it seemed the sky was the limit. Four resulting daughters classified VG as first calvers. One of them, now EX-90 and selected for this years NRM Show as a third calver, sold for 22.000 at the Holland Masters Sale 2008 to Twin Genetics in Dalen, The Netherlands. Another one is now VG-88 as a second calver. These Shottle Glendas are amongst the best Shottles in the Netherlands today. The highest g TPI member of the family is a fancy, springing Man-O-Man from Shottle Glenda 7340 VG-88, a full sister to Altas g TPI and g LPI topper TerBeek AltaGhost. Frans-Jan says: The Glendas have done all a breeder can dream of. It is a family with hardly, if any, misses. They are great looking, easy to manage cows. I do want more of them so I continue to flush the best ones.

Eastland Golden, Glenda and Gala were moneymakers for owner Eastland Holsteins in the nineties. In the following decade the Shottles from the Adam from the Molenvliet Glenda line grossed good money for owner TerBeek Holsteins. In 2008, TerBeek Shottle Glenda 7856, now EX-90, was auctioned for 22.000 and went to Twin Genetics in Dalen. She was a prolific flush cow and also provided the Meppelink family with a good return on investment. So did the VG-88 Bolton from Shottle Golden for Shanael Holsteins in the UK. This years Holland Master Sale will auction the just fresh 2186 g TPI Man-O-Man daughter from Shottle Glenda 7340 VG-88, the full sister to AltaGhost with 2224 g TPI. This Man-O-Man also has a DGV of +3140 LPI and is +16 for conformation! She ranks in the top g LPI animals in Europe and provides a Golden opportunity. She could be the money making Glenda this decade!

RED Glenda's
An O-Man daughter straight from the VG Herald from Molenvliet Glenda VG-87 was one of the fanciest OMans in the Netherlands. From this line TerBeek Holsteins also bred some really nice Red and Whites. They flushed O-Man Gina VG-87 to Poos Stadel ClassicRED and got a rare RC Glenda: TerBeek Glenda 2703*RC VG-86. She was done to Delta Fidelity-RED and her Red and White calves in Holland and the UK are now in calf heifers and they look awesome! There are also R&W bulls from the Classic awaiting proofs in Holland and the UK.

Glendas in Northern Ireland

A maternal sister to Molenvliet Glenda VG-87 arrived as an in calf heifer to the well-known Ballycairn herd in Northern Ireland. Andrew McCollum remembers their purchase very well: This Gibbon from Eastland Glenda did really well for us. She classified VG-86 in first lactation and made it to a 4* brood cow despite being bred to bulls like Delta Webster and Ricecrest Brett. Her best daughter was sired by Brett. This one went EX-92 2E and produced almost 14.000kgM with 3,2%f and 3,2%p in her 2nd lactation. Another daughter by Jocko Besne classified EX-90 and this Jocko is the granddam of Ballycairn Ramos Glenda EX-90, probably the best Glenda we have today. We have a Burlane Tennyson daughter fresh from her and we look forward to further developing this line. From a VG-85 BoIrish Alton Glenda we have a Leko son now in test for genomics at Genus ABS. The family seems to transmit high volumes of milk with usually lower fat% but protein% just as high or higher Andrew says. They are fantastic producers with sometimes a bit more udder volume but they do have great udder texture. The Glendas have done really well for us and you will find many in our herd today.

two high VG daughters to date. The best known one is Shanael Bolton Golden*TY VG-88 who was placed 3rd Junior Heifer in Milk at the National Holstein Show just two weeks fresh on her only show appearance! She is not just good looking: at 2.02 yrs she gave 16.160 kgM with 3,7%f and 3,1%p along with +2068 g TPI. Bolton Golden*TY VG-88 is a one of a kind bull mother and the best Golden so far in milk. She has also produced many embryos and has been a true cash cow for Shanael Holsteins. Paul Miller confirms the sentiments of other Golden breeders; Shottle Golden was a fantastic cow, but Bolton Golden is another step up, the best milking animal we have ever had. The family shows a true willingness to milk, in fact she has now produced over 36,000 kgM in her first lactation after an extensive flush program and is still milking. We sold several Iota embryos from her to Semex and are delighted that two sons have been accepted by Semex Alliance Canada at over 3,000 gLPI. More fine UK Goldens can be found at Refined Holsteins and Chalclyffe Holsteins. One of these is a great Shottle from an EX-93 Riglio Juror Capri daughter. Chalclyffe Shottle C Golden EX-90 made almost 18.000kgM 3,8%f and 2,9%p in 305d as a 3rd calver! Her super Capri dam is a maternal sister to the grand dam of Bolton Golden VG88. Looking back it seems Blackstar blood and more recently Shottle have worked really well on the Golden family. Shottle improved the udders and has benefitted from the dairy frames and the fantastic production genes present in this maternal line, that in some ways is quite different from other families. The Golden family now has something to offer to everybody!

The Glendas have done really well for us and you will find many in our herd today

Goldens in the UK
Eastland Cash had some interesting full sisters as well. The best known was Eastland Golda VG-88. A really fancy Sunny Boy daughter with a super udder and born on the same day as Cash. According to Eastland Holsteins, nine of her sons made it to the bull charts, amongst them Limburger (by Lord Lily), Eastland Judge (by Luxemburg) and Jeltan Jabot (by Jabot) in France and Canada. Another full sister, born 3 years later (!), was rather anonymous for a long time. This Sunny Boy, Moet Sunny Golden A, classified VG-85 in the UK Moet herd, produced over 100.000kgM and delivered, amongst others, two EX-90 and one VG-88 Lord Lily daughters. One of the EX-90 Lord Lilys produced numerous VG and high yielding daughters, amongst them a VG-86 Roylane Jordan daughter. This Chalclyffe Roy Golden cow, again line bred to Blackstar, was bred to Shottle with Shanael Shottle Golden EX-91 as a great result. This Shottle did it all. She made 14.519kgM in 305d in her 3rd lactation and she produced
