May, 2012 A B S T R A C T
The present study was conducted to investigate the attitude of college teachers towards internal assessment. Samples of 100 college teachers were randomly selected from the Government and Private Colleges of Bhopal city. Attitude scale towards Internal Assessment of B.A.Parikh was used to collect data. For the analysis of data statistical technique such as mean, standard deviation, and't'-test were used. The finding of the study were that- (i) Science and arts college teachers differs significantly in attitude towards internal assessment (ii ) Male and female college teachers do not differ significantly in attitude towards internal assessment (iii) Government and private college teacher differs in attitude towards internal assessment.

Introduction The best system of assessment to be followed by the Universities in twenty first century. The examinations became memory based and neither student nor teacher had any understanding of higher mental abilities. Ultimately all this is leading to excessive emphasis on the continuous and comprehensive assessment. Internal assessment is a continuous, periodic and internal process. The system of Internal Assessment is an innovation. It has not yet received a practical shape. There are yet a number of problems concerning internal assessment such as lack of scientific bases, ignorance the method of evaluation, lack of competency of teachers and negative attitude of teachers. A great degree of diversity has been observed in terms of assessment and grading of the students in University system at present. It is desirable that continuous internal assessment should be given attention whereby it improves the academic performance of the students. Vankubai(1965) found that internal assessment marks responsible for higher percentage at the public examination. Nath (1980) found that internal assessment marks possessed some predictive value for external assessment. Gundesekaran and Jayanthi(1980) found a significant co-relation between the marks of continuous internal assessment and the university examination. Reddy (1979) found that teachers of the college where internal assessment had not yet started did not differ in their attitude towards the internal assessment system from those of the college where the system was in practice. Joshua et.al (2004) found that attitudes of Nigerian secondary school teachers to student's evaluation was not significantly influenced by the gender ,academic qualification and teaching

experience of teachers under the summative and formative purpose both. Objectives of the study: 1. To compare the attitude of male and female college teachers towards internal assessment. 2. To compare the attitude of science and arts teachers towards internal assessment 3. To compare the attitude of Government and Private College teachers towards internal assessment. Hypotheses 1. There is no significant difference in attitude between male and female college teachers towards internal assessment. 2. There is no significant difference in attitude between Government and Private College teachers towards internal assessment. 3. There is no significant difference in attitude between science and arts college teachers towards internal assessment. Research Methodology: (a)Sample: A sample of 100 college teachers of science and arts stream were randomly selected from the government and private colleges of Bhopal city. (b)Tools used in study: Standardized test of Attitude scale towards Internal Assessment of B.A.Parikh was used to collect data. (c) Data Analysis and Interpretation: After the data was collected, it was processed and analyzed using SPSS software to draw exact conclusions. The data collected was subjected statistical analyses namely mean standard deviation and't' test.
Table-1: Significance of difference between means in Attitude towards Internal Assessment in relation to gender. Variables Groups N M SD t -value Gender Male 50 36.84 3.139 0.399 Female 50 36.56 3.850

From table 1 it is clearly seen that the calculated tvalue 0.399 is less than the table value 1.98 at 0.05

level and df=98.Hence the null hypothesis related to gender is accepted. This means that Male and Female college teachers do not differ significantly in attitude towards internal assessment. *Significance at 0.05 level of Confidence From table 2 it is evident that the calculated t -value is greater than the table value i.e. 1.98 at 0.05 level and df =98. Hence the null hypothesis is rejected. This means that teachers of science and arts differ significantly with reference to attitude towards internal assessment. Similarly, Government and Private College teachers differ significantly with reference to attitude towards internal assessment. Findings of the study:

* Male and Female college teachers do not differ significantly in attitude towards internal assessment. * Science and arts differ significantly with reference to attitude towards internal assessment. * Government and Private College teachers differ significantly with reference to attitude towards internal assessment. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, it is revealed that attitude towards internal assessment does not affected by gender but it may be slightly affected by types of colleges and different subject faculty. There is significant difference between the attitude of government and private college teachers towards internal assessTable-2: Significance of difference between means in Attitude to- ment, it may be due to the excess workload of teachers wards Internal Assessment in relation to subjects and types of col- of Private College.
